Boise WR quits mid season to hit portal

So, why does a kid do this? He's getting PT, and he's a statistical leader, and he quits a month before he's even allowed to actually enter the portal?

Unless him and the coach(es) just hate each other, this smells like tampering. Like someone has told him "quit now, tank BSU's season, and we'll give you a soft landing."

Which is really easy to do in the current system.

He probably has a Power 5 NIL offer somewhere and doesn't want to get hurt and lose it.

I'm getting closer to "just shut it all down and/or go FCS" each day. We've gone from opting-out of minor bowls when a guy was a sure-fire high draft pick to opting-out of any bowl for a lot of guys if they had any chance at all to make the NFL, to opting-out of the bowl game and some earlier games if the player wants to save himself for the NFL to, now, opting-out of half of a season to save oneself for a better NIL deal in P5. It's getting ridiculous and only will get worse.

No, I'm not saying FCS is a serious position I'm advocating, although in some ways I really would prefer it to trying to still be relevant nationally in a half-assed way with a ton of competitive disadvantages. At some point, the relative purity of just having a lot of Washington kids play FCS ball and do OK in the Big Sky, with limited travel, would be refreshing.

Again, no, not a position of mine. I haven't fully thrown in the towel. But man, there's just only so much BS one can handle, and in some ways, the G of 5 is even worse. Yes, you're shelling out a bit less money for coaches and much less NIL for players. But then you get shit like this, tiny media rights revenues that are disproportionately low compared to what you still have to shell out for coaches and other expenses, and a poorer financial position overall, it seems, all for what, really? Realistically, it's the chance to occasionally play in something like the Famous Potatoes Bowl against a MAC team where most of the players opt-out. In theory, G of 5 teams can still make some noise in basketball, even if it's tougher in football and WSU isn't going to be among the one or two teams per year that is ranked around #20 and gets the opportunity to be tackling dummies for Georgia in the playoff. But let's get real ... even a very good basketball program like, say, SDSU has is not happening at WSU, and even some FCS teams get in the NCAA tournament and can win a game or two sometimes. All this shit is just exhausting.

Can the NFL just have a rule that says something along the lines of, "if you don't finish a compete season (bowl season included), you cannot be in contention to be drafted or signed"?

Protecting his NIL stock, of course.

If Boise State wants the players... pay the players.

We can all be cry babies over here, but notice the schools buying the players aren't crying.

This NIL stuff/tampering is going to end up like AAU where coaches recruit players in the post-game handshake line for the next weekend's tournament.

Yup, which is why college football is probably going to boil itself down to about a dozen programs competing and the rest just watching along. If that's ok with you, then enjoy. The rest of us will be over complaining about what college football used to be.

I can watch the NFL on Sunday.

The TV networks are in the process of killing their Saturday golden goose. These are also the same geniuses who paid Pat McAfee $87 Million and put him on Gameday.

A dozen programs? Give me a breIak.

There are going to be at least 40 schools that prioritize college football and more power to them. They care.

WSU has about 8,000 people graduating a year right?

If we had 8,000 people TOTAL giving $1,000 a year into buying players... It'd be $8,000,000.

Say my numbers are fake. Okay.

Guarantee we can find 20,000 Coug fans drinking enough beer or Starbucks at about $400 a year.

Again... $8,000,000

Who's more stupid... the fans with teams they truly love and prioritize or Northwest Tree huggers who appreciate 30,000 seat antiquated stadiums with more concerns about wearing masks and a magical 6ft. distance apart?

We as Coug fans had it too easy for too long.

College athletics was for amateurs and provided a free education funded by ticket sales, TV and donations.

We as fans/alumni were never asked, nor participated in paying players. There was nothing 'had it easy for too long' about it. We funded college athletics and the values that it promoted.

I didn't grow up loving the semi-pro Cougs.

We aren't going to fund semi-professional athletics. it's going to be that simple.

With the NFL minimum at $750,000 and some NIL over a mill, sure seems more than semi-pro. It’s some pros playing amateurs. Players have no incentive to go pro any more, other than having more years to possibly get to better pay.

Rumor has it their RB aid also jumping ship back to Texas. Kids are being thrown money and being approached thru their parents or other sources.

Yes... it is that simple.

Others will continue and excel. We won't.

We "can", but our fans don't seem to want to. Not if it costs money

Blows my mind, but it's 100% fair for everyone to their own call.

I get it but if we are going to run college teams like a pro team if I am giving money specifically to pay players give me a cut of the revenue.

Owners of nfl teams pay players and get a hefty return. Essentially in this scenario fans are funding payroll but the school keeps all the profit.

And let's stop this charade of making these guys go to class if they don't want to. Penix is repotedly making over 1 million this year. Why in the world should these guys be forced to go to class anymore its not an amateur sport any longer.

If they’re not going to be students, then the connection to universities should be severed. They shouldn’t be financed through the schools, they should be self-supporting.
Either be pro leagues or amateur. Can’t be both.

Interesting...

But I also see where you can have someone great on scholarship at WSU that plays the trumpet.

They are so good that they get paid left and right to perform.

So you have someone on scholarship for playing an instrument that gets paid outside of school to play.

I don't think anything stops them from transferring repeatedly.

I'm not going to give in that playing an instrument makes you smarter than competitive sports.

You're starting to see the light! In all seriousness, I've been where you're headed for a few years.

Why would they do that? I'm sure they're fine with their future investments protecting themselves

I don't think the answer to your question is what you think it is

The university shouldn’t pay for the trumpet player’s travel, clothes, or trumpet when he’s playing gigs he gets paid for. And since he’s on scholarship, if there’s a music program event that conflicts with a paid gig, he should play the program event.

If he has done enough to get the offer he wants, the rest of the games are meaningless. If he has the offer he wants, the remaining games are only an opportunity to get hurt.

The NFL has:
a salary cap
a roster limit
multi year contracts
tampering rules
worst teams pick first in draft

The NCAA:
has none of those things
does have fans paying the salaries of players

Oh, I didn't say it was unfair. I just won't be watching it.

But, that and a dollar will get you a bag of chips. I'm sure the 12 or 40 or 32 team NCAA league will do just fine. There's plenty of Michigan and Alabama fans to cancel all of us out. They'll be fine. ESPN & Fox will be fine. WSU and the rest of the programs that will be chopped the next go around will continue on as essentially minor league teams. But hey, minor league baseball is fun, so maybe WSU football will still be fun, just on a lesser scale. Maybe I'll still watch that.

If WSU and OSU were smart they would rebuild the Pac 12 with a NFL model that created parity. They would also bar transfers from leagues that didn’t offer the same. Kids can always transfer out. But there would be no one from the Super League transferring in. Once you chose that path, that is your path. There is no fallback plan here.

NIL is going to break the NFL CBA. When rookie minimums go back up, the NIL stuff will settle down.

I think playing in a league with financial peers will be fun, even if not as nationally prominent as what we are used to with the Pac 12.
