I've been giving our funding problems a little thought and found this guys message interesting.

Simply in "engaged communities" you feel;
1. Welcome
2. Connected
3. Engaged.

I know this is "feel good management theory"....that said, I think WSU could benefit from as a little bit of a culture shift -- and frankly a different message then "guilt you to give" - if they really want to tip the scales with our donors.

I also don't think a winning football team alone is going to solve our funding problems. Too many cynical Cougs based on decades of inconsistency and mediocrity.

The whole "guilt you to give" is not an effective strategy for fundraising for football or athletics in general. I agree that a different approach is necessary.

The carrot works much better than the stick here. People can avoid and/or ignore the stick. How many of us support the Cougs because we have been forced to by guilt or self-shame? Anybody? Didn't think so. We follow WSU's academic and athletic achievements because we are interested in same and derive from pleasure from the school's success, not because we are being forced or required to do so. The CAF will grow by attracting those who appreciate the comradery in joining others dedicated to giving back to an institution that has given us so much in our lives. Participation as an obligatory act is a nonstarter.

Moos is a former football player and a "football floats all ships" AD. He is banking that support and revenues will increase when football starts to win (which they will) . He has no other strategy, no plans to gain new revenue streams, no plans to optimize current streams. If he had them, they would have been introduced by now. Therefore, the old "whine and moaning" about the lack support ways have and will continue.

Honestly, at Oregon Moos didn't have to worry about money. We wanted him because we were impressed with what he did there, but we minimized the impact that Dr. "Phil" Good and his check book had on his success. One thing is certain, he is not known as a "rainmaking" AD. Moos will either go down as our "savior" or hands down the worst AD in the school's history. His status is and will be tied to Mike Leach's ability to turn the program around. I just don't see any middle ground for him, because he has put all of his (and our) eggs in the football basket.

no matter what happens he will not be close to the worst AD in our history

Asking for donations is a waste of time. Why not be smart and just bump up the price of tee shirts, sweat shits, hats and license plates? That's what Cougs buy. So just scratch it up a few bucks and call it good.

Save everyone time, hassle, telemarketers, mass mailings. Just increase the price $3 on every item of apparel WSU sells and get your money that way.

Football is the only basket to put the eggs in.
