Chip Kelly to Oregon

Word is Oregon has asked UCLA for permission to speak to him….

Wouldn’t be surprised if Wilcox wanted that job too.

UCLA is cheap. Cal doesn’t give 2 shits about their program.

Nobody recycles coaches like Oregon and Oregon State!
In fact, they are pretty much the only colleges that seem to do it.
If Kelly is a hard get, maybe Rich Brooks?
I saw Erickson at the Civil War, and he looked pretty good, so maybe he would be a good fit?
You get two shots at the Oregon schools- once on your way up and once on your way down...

I don’t see his offenses unstoppable like they were years ago. I think his magic has moved on.

I don’t think he has had the same talent to work with at UCLA.

I think he gets more out of the Oregon kids than Cristobal ever did.

Kelly has noticeably less energy than he used to have. Kind of like the rest of us at his current age. Sure, he has gained experience, and that has value. And he will probably do a good job of using uncle Phil's money to hire assistants and buy recruits. So he will do OK. But his RPO approach is no longer new. It will always be hard to stop with the right QB and somebody competent calling the plays, so he may be able to buy the right QB semi-consistently. Long story short, he may be able to maintain the 9 win seasons, occasionally doing better. But I don't see him winning 11 games. Time will tell.

When has Oregon ever rehired a head coach ?

The knock on Chip is that he doesn't like to recruit and he doesn't like being recognized as a celeb when he goes out. That's what drove him out of Eugene in the first place. At UCLA, he blends into LA. In Eugene, he's the most recognizable guy in town after Uncle Phil.

Different things motivate people I guess. At UCLA, he can live on the beach and win 8 games/year without leaving LA on recruiting trips. In Eugene, it's a reunion at a place you chose to leave. I'd take the beach.

Well, that is what this thread is about....
Its kind of mind boggling that they are even thinking about it, although people have been predicting it all week, and suddenly it seems almost inevitable.
But to answer your question, Oregon has only rehired the same head coach three times so far:
Warren Smith
Hugo Bezdek
Richard Shore Smith

Chip Kelly would be the fourth

Hugo Bezdek also managed the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Looks like Ken Wilson might get Nevada HC gig.

he was driven out of Eugene by recruiting violations

Yep, sounds like Ken Wilson is a done deal for Nevada. He spent a lot of time there before coming to WSU.

Also, Ducks have reportedly already interviewed Justin Wilcox. I think he's Plan B if Chipster doesn't come back. Personally, despite the track record, if I were a Duck fan, I'd prefer Wilcox. I think he'd work harder at the job and would do well with the enhanced resources. He's bled Duck green & yellow his entire life. (Harsin and BYU's Sitake are also mentioned as potential targets.)

Cal is the second worst job in the league. I dont blame him for wanting to leave there.

Well we can look at history and other coaches that left and came back

Bill Snyder- KSU, seems to have work OK

Mike Riley - actually did better the 2nd time, but he first time around his record wasn't great, don't know how the Chargers hired him, then he comes back to OSU does well, and goes to Nebraska for a year and calls it quits

Bobby Petrino- Loiusville- 2nd time didn't go as well

Bill Walsh- Stanford, 2nd time around was great the 1st year, not so good after that

Johnny Majors - Pitt, 2nd time didn't go as well

Who knows with Chip, it could go either way, he has slowly gotten UCLA back to a modest form of respect, but I do believe coaching football at UCLA is not easy, they haven't had a top 10 program in over 20 years. A lot of bad hires have led to a lot of bad football. Terry Donahue was there for almost 20 years from the mid 70's to the mid 90's, had a lot of success, since then the UCLA has had a new coach every 3, 4 or 5 years and has never come close to the success they had in the Donahue years. The last coach to win a Pac 10/12 title was Bob Toledo in 98

Chip did great at Oregon the first time, took them to the NC title game. But that was nearly 10 years ago and, though he did decently his first two years for the Eagles in the NFL, he ultimately got fired after year 3 and then had a disastrous year with the Niners. His record at UCLA is 18-25. That includes this year's 8-4 season. What does this all add up to? Nobody knows, but I don't think it's a certainty he'll rekindle the magic he had at UO a decade ago. And there's something about rehiring a guy who left you before for "greener pastures". Again, I would rather hire Wilcox even though he too has a losing career record at Cal. He's a guy I can't envision ever leaving his alma mater. (No, don't compare him to Paul Wulff!)

Ducks have now had 8 decommittments from that top 10 nationally ranked recruiting class....and a couple of other verbals say they won't sign during the early period. The class has dropped to #22 in the nation since Mario left. I'm sure they're feeling the pressure to hire a coach very soon and try to salvage the class. Despite all the ballyhoo and gloating by the Oregonian/Oregon Live throughout the season as the Ducks kept reeling in these "unbelievable recruits", it's always best to wait until they sign on the dotted line.

Chip can do okay at Oregon but not like his last stint. Took him years to get UCLA to 8-4. Even Mora had a stretch of 9-5, 10-3, 10-3, and 8-5. It's not that hard to win there.

The early signing date may go away if enough blue blood schools lose the kids they had committed because they fired their coach.

I doubt that it will be adjusted. I suspect that the whole recruiting circus will just continue on until the final signing date. However, if they bumped it a few weeks, that would probably be good for WSU, on balance. We benefit from an early date in general, but with a new coach, a little more time would probably be a plus.

All these posts about retreads, and not a single mention of Tyrone Willingham?
Seems like he should be a top candidate for every PAC12 opening!

sports radio inPortland reported yesterday that the ducks were set to hire dan lanning, dc from georgia

If there was 1 school in the Pac 12 that was going to be the front runner for NIL deals, it’s Oregon.

UCLA doesn’t give a shit about football.

CK would be wise to take the Oregon job.
