A famous poster on Brand X says WSU has interest in New Mexico State head coach Chris Jans, who has had a lot of success in a short time with the Aggies. This is the same guy who got fired from Bowling Green after public drunkeness and lewd behavior towards women at a bar near campus. A phone video provided the indisputable evidence that got him fired. He apologized and has since worked to rebuild his reputation. Personally, I don't want that kind of baggage coming into Pullman. The me-too movement isn't very forgiving at this time. Others may disagree.

El C....sounds like you live in or near New Mexico and know about this guy. Your thoughts?

Actually said "heard he's the target" on Jans which would be more than just interest in my book. His comments on the subject after taking the New Mexico State job:

“I had an incident that I’m not very proud of. I made a huge mistake, and I’ve paid for it dearly. As coaches, we talk all the time about consequences and actions, and I failed. I failed that night. And it was embarrassing. It was embarrassing for my family. It was embarrassing for the university. It was embarrassing for the students. It was embarrassing that anyone was a Chris Jans fan. It was embarrassing for college basketball, and I’m not proud of it. But I wasn’t gonna let it define me. I picked myself off the floor with the help of my family and my friends, and I made a decision that I was gonna fight back and claw back, and hopefully get a second chance.

“So, as I said, I’m an example of consequences and actions, but I’m also an example of second chances, and if you learn from mistakes and grow from mistakes, and you understand that you have to do those things once you commit an act like that, people will give you a second chance. I’m a better father. I’m a better husband. I’m a better person. And I’m a better coach now than I was then. I know it. My family knows it. Hopefully all of you will know it in the very near future.”

Barely beat Ernie this year twice and one or both times when Franks was out.

Won't a rebuilding job cause this guy to drink?

Some schools will be able to get away with hiring a guy who made those choices, but not a school like Wazzu. Don't see how Chun and Shulz can sell him to our fans. People really didn't like the Leach hire and he didn't do anything.

Would have fit right in with the athletic department around 1982, '83 'ish.

There isn't a whole lot to go on but Jans doesn't seem like a Chun/Schultz guy either. Seems like a strange fit unless he's become born again. Seemed a bit full of himself thinking he has "fans" in the quote for that.

I completely disagree with both of you.

Couple of things. First of all, You two were OK with married father EK flying off to Puerto Vallarta to bang the daughter of a booster and paying -0- price for it (when he was allegedly recruiting) and WSU hiring him, but are aghast at this guy as a possibility? Really? You have funny senses of morality.

Second, I don't see anywhere in the articles I read that the two women involved were offended, or slapped him, or anything. So where was the outrage? Some co-ed from another school that was completely not involved in the circumstances was offended and confronted him. And her Dad, an alum, wrote to the school and got him fired 'cuz Jans called his nosy daughter a bitch for getting involved in something that was none of her business. I would have called her a bitch too.

So he got fired and was publicly humiliated. Apparently his wife and kids forgave him. He paid the price, got another chance, and now the WSU morality police say he's no good for us? I guess he should have just shot himself in the head for this heinous crime of being drunk and stupid? And NOT driving, by the way, he had a ride. No one deserves a second chance, even where the alleged victims didn't even complain.

...or you could go after Marvin Menzies who really had NMSU rolling. I think the problem with NMSU is they are a state school in a small conference and they have a history of success. WSU is a state school, but in a large conference with no history of success. I think we need someone who has proven they can do more with less. At the very least Jans hasn't built anything, just kept it rolling.

I'm with Loyal on the off court stuff. Whether Jans is the coach for WSU, I'll remain neutral.

I don't remember anyone hailing the Kent hire but ok. Jans is getting a second chance at NMSU. Does that mean we should hire him at WSU? Does it mean he's a good fit for WSU? Just wondering if you can see the difference.

Never have the slightest inkling where you'll be coming from day to day.

This entire post is pathetic. Calling a woman a bitch because she was offended that a head basketball coach was harassing co-eds. She should have known her place, right? Stay out of things. Don't stand up to dudes acting like asses. Know her place because if not, she's a bitch. Then you go on to pretty much excuse Jans' behavior because the women didn't report it. Hey, what were they wearing, Loyal? Were they asking to have their ass smacked by a drunk 45 year old by their outfit? Were they asking to have their heads pulled toward a drunk guys crotch? Hey, it's all good. He had a ride home! Pathetic.

Wasn't a fan of Kent when he was hired. It's not a coincidence that Kent couldn't find a job until Moos didn't have any options and gave him a call. What Kent did was pathetic, but you are comparing having a affair to sexual assault than that's your prerogative.

Clean it up the language.

PS he has got his second chance. He's a head coach again.

I am most embarassed about a first-year mid-major basketball coach referring to himself in the third person.
He seems quite full of himself. You can argue that's actually an important trait for a coach at this level but on the other side there is also risk and he seems to have already stepped into it and lost a job because of it.

Chris Jans is a very good coach. His teams play very hard defense and he has built the program since he got there. MM was a total mess and he badly out recruited rivals in a very bad league. The WAC has gotten much better but Jans has kept his teams on top. His teams are well disciplined and he stresses defense. NMSU ran off a good Grand Canyon team in the WAC finals. His team has improved over the season.Jans has made a lot of NMSU fans and he is affordable that is for sure. I will say that he is a better coach than EK and he will get the job done. NMSU will play a very tough Auburn team in the Big Dance and people are looking for an upset over the tough Auburn team NMSU won 30 games this season for a school record I did not like it when they hired him because of his past escapades. There is film available of him groping women so beware . But his demeanor and coaching has been very good during his second chance. His team are all his recruits and he has done a very good job of attracting top juco talent.

Hold on there, pardner. Where did I say I was okay with EK's behavior at UO? I simply didn't feel the need to bring him up in this thread. He's the old coach, I'm talking about the new coach. For the record, I never liked EK's moralizing when he was the Ducks coach after learning about his Mexican shenanigans and that he likely spent university money for that rendezvous.

I was merely quoting the articles. He called her a bitch. And admitted it later. Hell it was quoted in BG's termination letter. That's not an obscene word. Go ask George Carlin.

Please post a link to the article(s) that you are getting your info from, Brent. Because the two women are not identified anywhere as being co-ed's. In fact the first woman was involved with another member of the coaching staff - Jans knew her - so she was definitely NOT a co-ed. And he denied pulling her towards his crotch.

Then go look at the video. No he should not have (casually) slapped the woman's butt. But she didn't exactly jump up and run off or slap him. Not saying it was OK - but it was not "sexual assault".

And no, the women did not report it. They did not come forward later. They did not go to the cops, or Bowling Green, or the paper or anyone. But according to you he committed "sexual assault". Well, apparently they don't agree with you. The guy was way out of line and F-ed up bug time. But don't go throwing "sexual assault" around when you have no idea what you are talking about. Which you clearly don't.

Oh and your post does not at all reflect what I said in mine, what I meant, or what I think.

Here is what SI had to say at the incident at BGSU, complete with video of him slapping a woman on the butt.

Yep, one of several articles I read. Others get into way more detail. And no, it is not OK to slap women on the butt, particularly ones you aren't like - with. BUT, that was a very mild butt slap. Wrong - but "sexual assault"? Come on. (I'm still talking to Brent, not you gibby)

That was a typo which I corrected.......

What Jans was accused of meets the definition of sexual assault. What Jans admitted to also meets the definition of sexual assault.

Who when Leach was hired didn't like him. If you asked a 100 people back in 2011 I would venture 99 would say they approved of the hire.

You could say he has been rehabilitated. Clean record at NMSU, etc.

This is no worse than Leach's baggage.

You sure about that? In the video, it looks like there was consent. I'm kidding of course. Or am I? The girl did not shrink back in horror. Did she?

Here's my beef - and I just spent 10 minutes looking up the definition of sexual assault. It varies. You have all the obvious examples. All horrible. Then you get to the unwanted touching. OK - if you grab a random girl's boobs and give 'em a squeeze, yep that's assault. Hell, grab MY boobs and that's an assault. Then you get to the pig level. Yes, a pat on the behind MIGHT be considered sexual assault depending on your jurisdiction. But my point is this - those are VERY strong words. Did you violently rape someone? In the butt like Jerramy Stevens? Or did you give some chick at the bar a drunken pat on the behind? Doesn't matter. They are both SEXUAL ASSAULT!!!

Get my drift? Pretty strong words to throw around like confetti.

As far as the co-ed intervening, why did she not go to the woman and ask if she felt violated or assaulted or needed help or the cops called? No, she goes and jumps in drunken stupid coach's face. Was she worried about the woman? Apparently not.

interesting comments If some people were willing to forgive Pitino s past indiscretions which affected a lot more people then would they be willing to forgive Jans ? What penance do people require for his past behaviors.? He has not tried to hide his past behaviors and has admitted to the occurrences. What is it that makes a "school like Wazzu "different that other schools? i am not endorsing him but i see some hypocrisy here.NMSU fans would hate to lose him if he is seriously being considered for the coug job.

The letter firing for cause also indicated he pulled someones head to him at minimum and potentially to his "crotch" area. Something you acknowledged but are taking the drunk guys word that it didn't happen. Neither of us in a position to know when it comes down to it.

Nobody is suggested Jans is Stevens (straw man). I'm not about to try to get into the head of the young woman who came up to him after the bum slapping but the behavior that caused it is on Jans. We have no idea what really happened when he grabbed the second persons head but apparently all of it ended up causing an altercation in the bar.

End of the day Jans did get another shot with NMSU and they are playing in March. Maybe he is a changed guy, maybe stopped drinking, maybe Las Cruces isn't Bowling Green, or he isn't making mistakes around people who aren't his "fans". IDK but it's not a surprise his baggage is brought up and questions. I think it's fair because it absolutely part of the package.

Re: Pitino - "Some people" = CougEd.
Ticky tacky point - Jans - behavior and occurrence. Singular. Not plural.
Agree with the rest.

The "head crotch" woman was the first "incident" at the bar. Someone he knew who was seeing a BB staff member. Horsing around? Piggy? Overblown? Don't know.

Your "isn't making mistakes" remark - I call BS on that, Ferris. So the guy F-ed up, but he is still a continuing horrible human being, just keeping it under wraps according to you. Do I characterize your comments correctly?

Meanwhile, you can grab women by the pu$$y and still become POTUS, but you can't have one drunken, stupid piggy episode, pay the price for it, and be a WSU coach. America, circa 2019......

Nope. I'm not sure what you are talking about or the attempt to take my post out of context. I don't have any idea what Jans is or isn't doing in Las Cruces. Neither do you.

I don't know about Jans enough to really judge if there is a pattern of problems. My issue with guys like Pitino and others is that there is a long history of questionable choices and a general sense of where there's smoke.....there's fire. If WSU can't feel 100% solid that Jans had an isolated bad night.....I'd say to pass. I don't want us to sacrifice our values just to get some wins and if I were Chun, I don't want my basketball hire to end up generating negative news.

Well re-read your own comments, dude. Hard to take your EXACT words out of context. "Maybe Las Cruces isn't Bowling Green." Explain exactly what you meant by that. Or not.

You ignored the first part where I said maybe he’s changed.

Where have I made a judgement that: "he is still a continuing horrible human being, just keeping it under wraps according to you."

How do you get from maybe "x" to he's a "horrible human being"? I think that's taking what I said and turning into an extreme to try to make a point.

By the way. This change in direction all seemed triggered when I called you out for saying you were just quoting the story about the young women in the video when you actually called her "bitch" yourself. You have no trouble finding excuses for the way a drunk 45 year old man was acting in public yet direct your attention on a person who interjected due to his behavior and call her a "bitch"? I think that speaks for itself.

I’ve always been thankful we live in a country where one can make mistakes, pay the price in the form of punishment, show some remorse and self reflection and rebuild their life.

That doesn't mean everybody just gets to start right back where they were at - but they should be given the opportunity to climb the ladder again without regard to their past deeds. It's like hitting a slide on Chutes and Ladders - you go back but you're not kicked out of the game.

Sometimes that slide is pretty long.

And for my friend Loyal Coug - use "beyotch". More internet friendly with a nod toward Chappelle's Show.

I acknowledge that I read too much into your comments. My apologies for that. Meant to say something yesterday.

Agree and my guess is that after the WBB Alaska near fiasco, Schulz won't let this happen.

Chris Jans isn't the right coach for this situation. He inherited a good team with a history of winning. We need someone with a history of program building. My brother had an off the wall idea...bring Dick back! 2 years with a coach in waiting (Ben Johnson). Get this thing headed in the right direction and hand over the reigns to another young coach to hopefully bring the program to the next level. He is in his 70's now so it is far fetched but a fun thought.

Tough 1 point loss for NMSU yesterday to Auburn. Another thing on Jans, he is (again) a first year HC at NMSU - it would be pretty poor form for him to leave a school that overlooked his past sin and gave him a second chance. Better for him to stay there, accepted and a bit under the radar, and have some continued success before jumping to another program. Let the skeleton wither away in the closet.

Oh I wish 'ol Dick was of a mind to come back for a couple of years with his successor again in tow. Far fetched is kind of a mild description of that fantasy world. I'm thinking that another "grinder" type coach (as Dick described himself), maybe from some place like ND, that would re-instill a team concept and hard nosed BB. No high-flying slamma jamma coach.

This is not real comparable, but it is interesting to look at Andy Enfield at USC. The darling of the 2013 tournament, he took over a 14-18, 9-9 USC team reeling from the horrible hire/fire of Kevin O'Neill. Finished 12th twice, then has had some success. Dipped this year.

Don't see his type as the answer here.

Dick Bennett has a younger brother.

Have watched a couple of his tapes. Some interesting defensive concepts that kind of deviate from the PackLine Defense. PLD is always help/recover - virtually no ball pass denial. The younger Bennett takes it a step further in man and puts everybody in help position.

We actually ran his 3-2/1-2-2 almost exclusively.
