The LA times reports. Since Helton has been given the kiss of death, who does Swann hire to replace him at season's end? Helton was not hired by Swann there is no allegence. Swann is a Hall of Fame WR, both college and pro. If you are a former WR great who would you hire to replace him, putting your stamp on ,revitaliing USC? Alums are now complaining about non-descript hires back to McKay. Leach to USC? Is Swann that bold? Leach with high end talent at every position is a scary thought for the rest of the conference, and the nation. USC has stolen a conference head coach before in Larry Smith, and they haven't been relevant nationally in 10 years.

With multiple pro franchises in every conceivabled sport, it isn't a fishbowl job like the SEC, Big-10, or Big-12 ect. Like WSU, it is a Saturday spotlight job, Leach could get away with his nuttiness, and he meets the absolute requirement in the post Carroll era of running a very tight ship.

I just hope Swann isn't that bold or forward thinking.

Obviously anything can happen but Mike Leach to USC would end up in frustration for both. You look back at the "moments" that Leach has had in press conferences and locker rooms over the years and you see a guy that will wear on the administration and fans if the team isn't winning at a high enough level to stave off criticism. USC is the kind of place where Mike can have great success, but they would fire him if he drops back off from that success. If we go 11-2 this year and 5-7 next year, our fans would say, "Hey, remember how great last year was?". USC fans would be calling for his head.

CML to Los Angeles? CML grew up in Wyoming. He has written books about Pirates and Native American leaders, both subjects based on old history and old ways of doing things. His previous job was a "furthest outpost" where he didn't have to deal with politics, he could speak his mind without the PC police ranging in his head too much. So rural, is my point. Before that, Oklahoma where, program politics are surely there but he wasn't head coach there, either. Kentucky before that, still not head coach but certainly Kentucky isn't a "PC" kind of place.

Have you heard of Coach Mike Leach, what his preferences are, or read "Swing Your Sword"? His demise at TT was due to a helicopter parent that couldn't keep his nose out of the program, for crimany sakes. You think CML would intentionally go to USC?! Without being drugged? Held against his will?!

CML could potentially head somewhere. Sure. USC ain't one of them. On a more obvious note, a coach that endorsed President Trump, heads to LaLa land?

For what it’s worth, Leach attended Pepperdine and shared w/me that it doesn’t get much better than Manhattan Beach, CA.

True on the Pepperdine but it's still a small community. Have you been there? It's not even in Malibu, but kind of outside of it. It's known for the homes on the beach line but you never see the town for a reason. You can choose to go into LA or stay put. Last time I was there, there wasn't even a national grocery store. Small little school and area. LOADS of money but small area.

The Manhattan Beach is a little eyebrow raising. But KINDA makes sense. Quiet, quaint as far as beaches outside of LA goes, little to no public access, really. I'll still stand by my evaluation of the man. He's not a big city kind of guy.

He'll travel to big cities! He obviously loves to travel. So I have zero doubt that he'll find cities he enjoys. But look at his second home. Key West. There are pictures of him riding a bicycle around that town. It's a small, quaint little town. I just don't see CML heading to a big city, with big boosters with big politics infested into the program. Almost every piece done on CML starts with him walking to work in Pullman. Waving to fellow Pullmanites. Getting a coffee. He enjoys smaller towns, not one of the largest in the nation.

Wouldn't Swann be in trouble too?

Leach isn’t going to USC. Moving across the PAC to deal with the USC alumni base is not Leach’s style.

I’ll bet given how tactical Leach is he would let it go wild in the press that USC was after him and then shuts them down and calls every recruit saying look USC wanted me too and I said no. You should do the same

Petros was on KJR yesterday and said USC may not have the appetite to eat Helton's contract. I don't know if the university is flipping the entire bill but they have a 150 million dollar lawsuit was settled for a gynecologist who worked for the school.

They have that expenditure plus the expenditure of some construction going on within the campus.

Actually that is the genius of Leach. He could make a go and enjoy Siberia. He has a law degree, how many coaches can say that? He is the diverse, so if he did go to USC and felt he had the backing of administration he would go. He also has shown he would go for the money if it is ridiculous enough.

"Dreaded vote of confidence". Good phrase, and accurate. My memory says that the vote of confidence by the USC AD at this point in the season is an almost sure indication that if he loses one more game, the AD will be actively talking to replacement candidates. Talking quietly, behind closed doors, but talking none the less. And Swann has already jotted down a short list on a yellow post-it note...you can bet on it. My guess is that it will include some proven coaches, and I would not be at all surprised if a defense-background coach was on the list.

Paging Justin Wilcox.....

Interesting insight from Petros as the Coliseum upgrade of $300M is being funded solely by USC.

I dunno if they would hire Wilcox. Kwiatkoswki though would be something to watch.

Swann wouldn't hire Leach, in any case. If they get rid of Helton and the complaint is that they need to look/go bigger, especially with Chip just having been hired at UCLA, they're going to quit screwing around and look "bigger" on the national stage. I don't know who would be realistic, but it would be several tiers above Helton and at least a tier or two above Leach in terms of perception / star power.
