Clay McGuire back

He was at SC for one year. And from what read from people covered the team they said he did a heck of a job this year. Take it FWIW. I really don’t care. He’s the OL coach again and I hope he works out. He did a good job getting bodies here and hopefully he does a good job doing that again.
I stand corrected . You don’t care if they coached in the air raid , you just believe the concepts and wider splits would escape a guy who has coached 30 years but it is second nature for a guy who never coached the position .

I would suspect Morris has different terminology and different plays than what McGuire and Graham ran at usc.

Again I would look at the resumes and JM is tough to beat . And he had a top three line at OSU. Can we say same about McGuire at USC

McGuire recruited and left Miller a loaded offensive line. I don’t think Michalczik is a fit under Morris. Morris is going to go with dudes he knows. Im not saying he’s not a good coach. I don’t think he’s a fit in the air raid.

I like that staff Dickert is putting together. Some were complaining over putting together a Mountian West staff. Now we're get a guy that was at USC this year and he suck too. Some people you can't please.

He sucks because he sucks. Ive seen the product he coaches on the field at WSU. Unless he is worlds better, no I am not pleased. And you won’t be either.

He was at USC one year and the offensive line improved a lot. In 2020, they were 10th in the Pac 12 in giving up 2.5 sacks per game. This year they were 3rd at 1.5. Same for red zone offense, last year 10th, this year 3rd. Last season they were dead last in running yards per game, they finished ahead of the Cougars this season at 7th. Plus, when he was at WSU the first time, the Cougars had prolific offenses. Same when he went back to Texas Tech. He is also still young at 40 years of age. I would think he has gotten better.

Not thrilled by this

Backpeddling OL in pass protection sucks ass.

First, you’re asking the least athletic position group on the field to do prob the most athletic movement on the field. What could go wrong asking 300-330 pound kids to backpeddle???

Second, how do you punch with power when your feet are never anchored?

Third, how do you sink your hips and punch with power? Lowering your center of gravity while backpeddling and maintaining balance???

Fourth, how do you be successful as an offensive lineman with a high pad level, high center of gravity, weak punch and never have your feet in the ground to deliver or receive contact?

McGuire sucks because the technique he teaches sucks. Mason Miller teaches different technique, has much more success.

Whatever talent he left is irrelevent. He would fuc$ it up. It is possible to coach kids up and down.

There is a reason the sacks went way down. It was because McGuire left.

There are 4 positions you cannot screw up when hiring. OL, QB, DL and DB.

In other news, Dickert just changed the offense from a scheme that can get by with a qb that has accuracy issues at times…. to a scheme whose guru says accuracy is the most important skillset for the qb.

Consider the source of the complaints.

I remember is the OL sucking after taking over from the bare cupboards and awfulness of Wulff, but got better and better.

Like everybody in life I will assume he got better with experience.

I would think he has. He was learning a new position to coach his first few years. From what I understand, at USC the guards often had their hands on the ground. That is not the same as he was when he was coaching at WSU under Leach.

His resume shows 4 losses in a row to WSU.

And was part of a bad football culture as a player- every future coach from those teams has been a hack.

Walden players are now 9-43 coaching in the Pac12

McGuire if successful will be out the door again soon. If not, so will the staff.

I know where my first call would have been. He is employed by a school similair to WSU, has a track record of different systems and his lines have performed very well, and he is old where he is one stop before retirement. Offer him loads of money for his last stop, and a chance to come home.
So mysterious!

They’re hiring guys they know and have networked with. None of these guys were hired away from NASA. None of these guys were teaching math at Harvard.

If you can’t coach a kid to backpeddle or pass set, you’re fired. This should not be difficult for a guy making hundreds of thousands of dollars to learn. Even you could do it.

You are wrong. Again.
Are you teaching math at Harvard?

Chemistry is very important amongst a coaching staff. McGuire and Morris have worked together and both know the system well. Morris' Air Raid system is much more modernized than Leach's. The splits aren't nearly as wide and they have precalled runs unlike Leach and the numbers in the box call made by the QB.

He’s the standing SC OL coach who wants to come back to Pullman for crying out loud

I loved your Robert Anae idea.

Felt like we scored twice with Ward and Morris, bringing back McGuire is like muffing a punt return and the other team recovers on your 12 yard line.

McGuire has a lot of California recruiting ties as well, something the staff is short on. Cooper is familiar with part of that state but that's really it. You have to have a few people on staff that know which schools to hit and which ones to skip.

Well Kasey Dunn was the OC calling the plays and witnessed WSU's lame 2002 AC goal line stands. Remarkably similar
Sounds like Dunn is also involved in a lot of good teams.

BU/OKST was a great game to start Saturday with - just from a viewership perspective.

This is exactly my thoughts.

I am not psyched about this at all. We were just starting to click with the run and shoot and had momentum with a qb and an offense getting much better each week.

Would have loved to have seen this offense through until at least JDL's senior yr. I think we are leaving a lot of meat on the bone here.

I like the run and shoot WAY better than the air raid. More intermediate and down field passes.. Its just a heck of a lot more fun to watch imo...and harder to stop.

Maybe it wasn't feasible to run the Run and shoot anymore with the lack of coaching pool....but its sucks nonetheless.

I did listen to the Eric Morris interview and liked what I heard...but as for now, not happy at all about switching offenses.

I am hoping Morris doesnt see just one way to do it. The fact he brought up a TE tells me he may be more creative than Leach, and not believe repetition that is the end all be all. Don't get me wrong...it is probably 75% of the equation, but the other 25% Lake can exploit.

If you are being paid $400,000+ to coach, I don’t feel sorry for you if you have to study up and learn the run and shoot. Get it done.

I like the offense way better than the air raid. A fair comparison would be having seen a run game in the air raid tho.
