So this is pretty funny - I happened to click to the '90's TV series "Coach" tonight, and the episode was about Dauber losing their playbook (and the other team getting it) 2 days before their bowl game. Then the media speculated that it was a trick by Coach.
So clearly CML watched Coach and came up with his idea there.
