I just read that the coroner has determined that Beekman had fentanyl in his system at the time of his death as well as another medication. A sad situation. Fentanyl is extremely nasty stuff.

From what I understand, most who od this way don't do so knowingly, eg he was unaware that whatever he was taking had fentanyl in it. Not sure what recreational drug kids take that is laced with it, but thats really horrible for him and his family.

That's my understanding as well.

I personally know 2 people that have died from it.

The two vials below both show lethal doses from the Newhampshire Crime Lab.

It's bad news.

Sponge and Bleed, you are both spot on. Its long been used to increase the potency of low grade heroin. Too long retired from the toxicology profession to know if it is now used to "upgrade" any of the various synthetic opiates but would not be surprised if that was the case. The clowns putting these formulations together rarely have the skills or knowledge to do so properly. Or even give a damn about any possible deaths. Sponge's picture is worth its thousand words.

Most, if not all, of the fentanyl coming into the U.S. comes from China. And don't tell me that the inner circle in Beijing do not know who is responsible for this. Just another indication that the Communist Party there does not have the best interest in mind for anyone other than themselves. Brings in money and Americans die. Cool.

After Googling the other drug that was in his system, my only educated guess is that he was doing Lean. Promethazine is used in it along with Codeine in cough syrup. He probably thought he got cough syrup and it was actually laced with Fentanyl.

You may well be right. Had not heard the name Lean before but was familiar with "purple drank", a cheap thrill popular in some sections of the South. A relatively mild opiate/promethazine mix. Why someone would substitute a fentanyl concoction for cough syrup is beyond me but that would be a good explanation.

I hope Chun has an orientation meeting at the start every year; along with regular refresher updates; about unknowing drug interactions and their consequences. Ideally we would have a pharmacist available on campus who could automatically advise regarding known combinations, much like the better pharmacy chains and many HMO networks have automated. That should be for the entire campus community, but it could start with the athletic department. My groomsman's wife (a WSU Pharm grad) worked for several years for an elderly housing chain, and much of what she did was review client prescription histories, looking for conflicts. When people can be sourcing prescriptions from multiple doctors, plus the guy on the corner with his own special mix, that is not fully possible. But examples like this one give the athletic department an opportunity to reinforce a teaching moment. None of that will bring back Mr. Beekman, but it might possibly help prevent another one. And thank you for that picture, Spongeworthy. It is truly worth the 1,000 words.

Reddit is ridiculous source of bad information for people trying to get a high with alternative drugs if you can’t score what you need. A bunch of wannabe pharmacist giving options what to mix Promethazine with.

Fentanyl is how Prince died...and I read in the neighborhood blog of people dying often from Fentayl laced heroin or sometimes even coke.

The Seattle police will even go out on bikes and tell users when Fentanyl laced Heroin is out on the streets and to be careful.

I never thought this would happen in Pullman, though. Sad.
