Cougs add another home game vs. Portland State

WSU will host Portland State in 2021. PSU gets $525,000 guarantee for that game.

FBSchedules.com is now reporting WSU has added a second home game vs. Portland State in 2024. PSU's guarantee is $562,500 for that game.

I don't see a game on that 10-year plan that I'm excited about. Maybe Wisconsin, a little, but that's tempered by the fact that I know they'll buy their way out of it 10 minutes after the game in Madison ends.

The thing I do like - I see a lot of wins on that schedule. Or at least, a lot of should be wins.

I'm excited about Wisconsin but I share your concern about the late cancellation. Sterk was a dumbass for agreeing to that schedule (assuming it was Sterk?)

You should get yourself excited about the KSU game and head down to the Little Apple for some tailgating. Monstrous parking lots on each side of the stadium means that there is crazy amount of tailgating.

It will be interesting (to me at least) to see where KU football is in 2027 when we finally play them. They might be two more head coaches down the line by then.

I will say that 2019 is the perfect ramp up schedule for breaking in a new QB this year.

Only home and home opponents that dont require a visit 1st are CSU & BSU.

The Seattle game tOSU bought their way out of was 2009, arguably Wulff's worst team.

Got a neat wave tank out of it.

Honestly, I'll also be surprised if we make it to KSU. That's another one where we travel first, so what's to keep them from backing out?

Even if they don't, it seems like the schedules that are more than 2-3 years out are pretty soft. I would not be surprised at all if the contracts with both KSU and KU get cancelled before we play either of them. I'm not really even convinced that we'll actually see Houston in Pullman (in 2020) - the buyout probably isn't that big.

FWIW, KU and KSU have never shown a tendency to cancel, so I'm guessing that we don't have to worry about those. KU played at Central Michigan in 2018 and at Ohio in 2017. KSU has played at UTSA and Vandy in the past few years.

I think teams will be less willing to back out if we keep winning 8-9 games a season. Especially a team like Wisconsin hoping to boost it's playoff chances. If teams play us close and still lose, it doesn't hurt the resume too much and a win really boosts the chances. Plus the airport expansion makes it far more accessible than it was a decade ago.

Other factors are increased paydays to schedule body bag games and the challenge of getting paid attendence.

Anybody else excited to see U of I back on the schedule in 2020 and 2026?

Yeah, didn't think so.

I actually like playing the Vandals even if they've dropped to I-AA.

Two Division One flagship universities 8 miles apart? It makes sense for The Palouse.

I would love for them to make a regular appearance in the FCS slot on our schedule. Ideal for me is there are every 3 years in the FCS spot, and BSU is in the Mt Weat game every 2/3 years.

Pete, Pete, Pete.

First of all, WSU is not the "Flagship" university in Washington, despite being the land grant university.

Second, UI was ordered by the Idaho Board of Education to quit calling themselves the "flagship" university in Idaho. Years ago. While they may have had some claim to that once upon a time, as they were the first college in the state and the land grant institution, they have shrunken significantly in stature, sadly. Although they are still #1 in the state for research (I think, unless ISU has passed them by).

I dont want WSU to schedule tough non con games. I think the SEC has laid out the blueprint on how to schedule for max wins. Portland State just seems underwhelming. Been there, done that.

If WSU is gonna schedule them for home only, fine. But for teams they have to travel to, I’d prefer West Coast BCS programs.

Agree with this completely, and I also wish the P12 would copy the SEC model and play an FCS cupcake game a week or two before their rivalry game.

Honestly, and this would benefit Idaho, we should play the Vandals every year on November 15th. Attendance would be tolerable, and we'd get a breather game before Apple Cup, which would serve as a great time to get redshirting players some extended playing time.

Conference realignment, death of WAC football, etc. has made it a little more challenging. BYU, New Mexico State and the MWC is all you have on the west coast for OOC.

I wish the PAC 12 teams would just buy their non con games and play them all at home. Literally leave campus only for league games. Get your kids off airplanes and in their own beds. End all these ridiculous night games with kids getting home at 3 or 4 in the morning. Kick off at 11, 2 and 5. Dont let ESPN push your games to when the East Coast is sleeping. Make them take away time from other conferences to show your highlights too.

Loyal, thanks as always for your clarifications.

Didn't know that U of I's flagship status had been reduced by that state's legislature.

However, as far as I can tell, there's been no such penalization or diminishment from Washington's governing bodies.

Therefore, not sure this would be an apples to apples comparison.

More like apples to potatoes.

Biggs,

Not sure whether or not this would be a net positive once Martin Stadium expansion kicks into high gear.

Might have a hard time filling 55,000 to 60,000 seats with San Jose State and a couple I-AA teams three straight weeks in September.

I will say that's only an initial reaction ... haven't thought it through at this early stage.

Who cares if you fill it? Rose Bowl seats 100,000+. UCLA isnt filling it. SC isnt packing them in. Which league team has a huge sell out streak???

I see Coug fans moan and groan about adding seats when the ones already there arent filled. So what??? Why is WSU held to a higher standard in sell outs than other league schools??? Ridiculous.

In regards to the opponent, you go to watch WSU!!!! Wanna see a good game? Fine. Wanna see some diff programs? Sure. Ultimately its about seeing WSU win!!!! If the stadium isnt packed for SJSU who cares??? Hold your thumb on the scale like the SEC does. You dont see the outrage at Alabama when they schedule weaker opponents. You see Saban on tv telling the fans their asses better be in their seats to support THEIR team.

There are WSU “fans” that would be ok with a loss as long as it was to a blue blood program. Fools gold.

Thanks Biggs for spelling out how your vision could work and why the naysayers are wrong.

It's like Cougatron here and some of the more outspoken posters at Brand X say: "If you want to be big, you've got to think big"

1. Hire and retain big-time HFC. Check (Thanks Mr. Moos)

2. Build big-time facilities. Check (Thanks again, BM)

3. Win big-time. (37-15 record and two bowl victories since 2015).

Once the new IPF is in place, stadium expansion really could be Mr. Chun's next major project.

If you think the size of the stadium isnt an issue, youre wrong. Sports talk radio hosts in Texas talk about Leach all the time. They compare Martin Stadium to a high school stadium. Genuine shock at how small the capacity is. If you think that isnt used against WSU in recruiting all over the west coast youre ignorant.

If kids were choosing schools on wins Leach would have a better class. Oregon would have a terrible class. The choose based on the life of luxury they live while on your campus.

I think the schedule looks pretty good-
Assuming Wisconsin, Kansas, KSU, Houston are held to their contracts.
We really aren't at a place where we need a tougher schedule.
I think we need to play Idaho, EWU, BSU a little more frequently. Even if they bring 5000 fans, that is 5000 more fans than New Mexico State or UNC, and probably better games as well.
All that being said, Kansas, KSU and WSU will likely all be very very different programs when we enter the 2026-2029 stretch....

While Idaho sounds good, they don't bring jack for fans for being 8 miles away. I'd rather play Montana if we are going Big Sky.

Maybe by the time we play KSU/Kansas we'll be playing against CML. How's that for a horrifying thought?

Loyal, I know you've got some good sources, but is there any basis whatsoever for your speculation?

Hadn't seen or heard a single thing implying a move to either school was anywhere on Coach Leach's radar.

I heard it from walzuu - he has an information pipeline into Bohler gym that is second to none.

Idaho might perk up a little. I don't think EWU has anything that they don't have.
I do agree that Idaho fans have always seemed really disinterested in watching them play WSU, and I don't quite understand why. Pretty sure I'm not the only one here who remembers some losses and near losses to Idaho...
Idaho has a better record against WSU then WSU has against USC, and Coug fans are still pretty psyched to see USC!

Two things:

First, I fixed your comment above. "Idaho will not perk up a little. I think EWU doesn't have anything that they have, like Petrino."

Second:
"they can just go to their locker room, and cry" - Idaho's QB after the 2000 game. (More or less quote)

I remember......
