can't be the only one scratching my head over this.

On the road vs an incumbent coach with a system in place and the Beavs not only give up home field but also a FG?

Thoughts?

I think there is a good shot our defense is significantly better. Obviously they were awful so it’s not a stretch...but guys like Chau Smith, Tyrese Ross, Travion Brown at MLB, Isom, Marsh, Stone, McDougle Woods Crowder etc. we could make a pretty significant step to be decently solid. Offense takes a hit but over all we could be fairly competitive assuming a QB can play alright.

I'm curious about the MIA players listed in another thread. I guess we'll see in a couple of weeks.

If the defense is lined up correctly and knows where to go... within a sound scheme they will be better. That half of the staff moving on was a good thing.

Must be assuming OSU’s offense takes a bigger step back than ours does.

really, if I was coaching either side my game plan would be to feed my veteran RB until either the defense stops it or he throws up. We’d throw just enough to keep the D honest.

We still have a talented WR corp, and should have a serviceable QB to get them the ball. The question will be whether or not they will be on the same page due to how the RnS works.

It’s somewhat surprising, but Luton was the only capable QB Oregon State has had over the past many years. When he was out with injury, their offense stalled completely.

The Beavs have to replace Luton, Hodgins, 3 starters on their OL, and their defense was bad. While I’m not any more confident in our team, I can see bettors pumping the brakes on them.

Yeah I didn’t know he was gone, he was very good. I don’t know who they had behind him but that seems like a big loss.

OSU's QB has one start. That isn't much, but it was an impromptu start on the road against Oregon....tough duty, and he performed well. We had a chance to win that game late in the 4th quarter. If Jefferson follows his block instead of trying to hurdle a defender and ultimately fumbling, the outcome may be different.

The OL is a concern, we lost three starters there. The guys replacing them are saltier than the pundits may think though. They have experience aplenty, just weren't starters. As for the rest of the O, we have Jermar Jefferson back and he is healthier than he has been in over a year. We did lose Isaiah Hodgins the big WR, but we have plenty of talent at that position.

On defense....yes, OSU was bad last year. One point worse than WSU. We have recruited to our needs however, including some JUCO and other transfer talent and I expect us to take a huge step forward. In fact I will go out on a limb and say our defense will be "good" this year.

Anyway I'm also scratching my head over the line. I see OSU winning going away....

OSU will win and possibly win big. Bet your money on it even at -2 to -10 OSU. Maybe De Laura is ready but there is too much going on and the unit isn’t complete. if we keep it competitive it will be because our defense makes some nice plays and is decent and OSU struggles offensively.

Not sure how you can determine that. This could go any number of ways...first games are like that anyways now you’ve got an abnormal schedule, new coaches, new quarterbacks...nothing would shock me, close game or blowout either side.

I don't disagree that OSU should be the favored team this weekend, but given everything I've seen in college football this season, no way would I lay big money on an early season game. Too many variables.

It’s a mystery. Grab bag of uncertainty. No clue what we will see. I do know we will have the best player on the field in Borghi. That’s about it.

From what we saw across the board in college football:

defense will lag behind the offense, so expect a lot of scoring.

It'll be the battle of the fewest mistakes, imho.

Do we? My assessment of the defense last year was that we had some talent and it was coached like crap. Huge upgrade on coaching and quite a few returners/upgrades. I could also see a 20-17 type of game too.

Hahaha...Borghi? I guess you don't get out of the Palouse much. You'll know the name Jermar Jefferson by 23:00 PST.

Well both be bad teams with a couple decent players. Tallest midget I suppose.
I am hoping if no one engages he will go away. Lots of awesome OSU fans out there-many have stopped by our boards for constructive friendly banter. But Beef seems to be a troll.

Who says I don't know who Max is? I know perfectly well who he is and nothing I wrote asserts that I don't or didn't, so I'm not sure what it says about my football knowledge...but it tells me you didn't read my post very closely. I simply think that JJ is better than Max. I guess we shall see in a few short days.

@walzuu have I been unfriendly? Maybe a little smack-talk, sure, but no more so than you guys. I'm not the one that was initially hypin' my RB as the "best player on the field, that honor goes to Coug90...which is fine; I was just retorting to that.

I hang out with many 'cougs when they come to Corvallis. I live in Seattle and know plenty of 'cougs and they are by and large fine people and good fans. So maybe we can remember that text is tone-deaf and tongue-in-cheek comments are often misconstrued.

I'm no troll.

....and at least we can agree on loathing of the ducks <sic> and Huskies.

I’m good. Jefferson’s a good player too, still think Borghi is the best player on the field Saturday.

When you come to another teams board to smack talk, you are a troll. When both players are likely all conference players, does it really matter if one is slightly better than the other or not? Frankly, they are both outstanding players and I do not need to disrespect Jefferson to make myself feel better.

The nerve of some fans talking up their players on their own message boards—reeks of bias and favoritism.

Well, congrats to you guys. Your Frosh QB looks like he could be a great player.

That was a real disappointment for me. I thought our D would take a step forward from 2019 but instead it took a step back. The scheme was terrible and we didn't make changes, which all points to the DC. Looking at his body of work over 2 seasons and 1 game, we (OSU) need to make a change there.

Anyway...good luck the rest of the way.

Why did Gary Andersen leave OSU and money on the table?

Apparently Utah State is firing him and there will be no severance.

My theory on Gary is that he was in over his head. He was a charlatan, a snake oil salesman and it caught up with him. His first go at USU, it's clear now that Matt Wells and Kalani Sitaki were the brains behind that outfit....and the other dude, can't remember his name but he looked like "The Wolf" from Pulp Fiction.

At Wisconsin, he rode the prior staff's accomplishments and got exposed in that last game....I think it was Ohio State the blew them off the planet. So he bailed. Came to OSU and rode it out for a few years. Then drove our program into the dirt, blamed all his assistants, and left.

He may be the worst thing that ever happened to OSU Football, at least in the modern era.

Curious though, why would he walk away from so much money? He took a pay cut to go back to Utah St. Doesn't seem like the actions of a charlatan.

I've always wondered this thing too. Something seems rotten in Denmark...and I am guessing that Anderson's true character is getting exposed.
