Thoughts?

I know this is a whole new, wonderous world of social media and everyone hanging on every word of everyone else, but...

Do you like the posts like the one that Noah (and every other athlete) posts when they enter the portal? Are they necessary?

I feel like they are all boilerplate now and have lost any sense of sincerity - "I wanna thank X, Y and Z. With that being said..." It just seems like they are self-serving at this point, but so is all of social-media, so no big surprise there.

Yea, I agree. The posts/announcement always seem about as sincere and contrived as a politicians campaign promise. Boilerplate is an apt analogy.

I'd rather they post "I didn't get the rock enough in crunch time and the coach disrespected my fat little girlfriend" over the blah blah blah they put out now.
Or something like this

"I was supposed to be the man this year but Mike Flowers came in and stole my thunder. That being said I am going to transfer because my feelers are hurt and "Smith" is a big meenie. I know my jump shot couldn't hit the ass end of a cow with a banjo so I am taking it to another team so TC will not have to watch my horse shit game any longer"

Or perhaps....

I identify as a female now so I'm going to try out for a team of people who all identify as female. I'm going to be a star and it will feel good. To hell with those who identify as women! 😀

Not that Noah would do this, but it's more like our current sad state of irrationality...

Probably self-serving to an extent but it's also a way for athletes to get information out especially to media. I don't like the "boilerplate" but not only do I just skip to the end but it's now basically expected. It's a way a recruit respects fans and programs while they announce their decision.

I want to thank Noah for his contributions to Cougar basketball the past three seasons, particularly his amazing weekend last year against Stanford and Cal when he was named National Player of the Week. With that being said, I look forward to filling his scholarship with a sharpshooting guard who will know what a good shot looks like and when not to force things.

Glad Cougar

Well maybe the next honest one will be from a UW athlete complaining that the women are ugly.

He wouldn't be wrong

Nah, doesn't bother me at all. What I do find irritating are 30, 40, 50, and 60 year old men complain about the habits of 20 year old's.

I think social media posts in general are annoying and unnecessary.

What IS "social media" anyway? I'm pretty sure it's actually "anti-social" media. That's all I have to say about that.

Interesting article vis a vis the truckload of platitudes and coach-speak we get today.

I'm curious how much of the part about fans/ media piling on Rypien was true? Or if it was just a diversion by Walden to draw attention away from his failings?
Walden essentially saying ‘if he doesn’t play for WSU, it will ruin his life’ is really just a different kind of coach-speak. Probably even more eye-rolling than the current version that doesn’t really say anything.

Whose life? Walden's or Rypien's?

If Rypien left, Walden is out the door in 84 or 85

Follow the article three more pages to the last part (yeah, not easy).

It says Walden crowed about being an option team on his coaches show. And knocked pass happy teams.

And Rypien's dad said other teams warned him about Walden's offense during recruiting.

Walden also tries to talk up the pro careers of Samoa Samoa, Steve Grant; and Clete Casper (!)

Walden essentially said that if Rypien left WSU, Rypien’s life would be ruined.

I think more likely if Rypien left, Walden’s next job would have been at Spokane CC…sweeping the floors in the coaches offices.

Selective reality. Something he maintained for the next 30 years.

Why...Walden was playing for the Rose Bowl in 81 with Clete Casper and Ricky Turner. His offense had some success with Turner in 1983. Also, in all the years that Rypien has been gone, has he ever complained about coming back.

The fact Walden had the success he had he probably kept WSU from playing against Spokane CC instead of coaching them. His success with that budget and having a dominate power in the same state was pretty remarkable.
