Deep Ball Mateer

I assume you're passing on explaining your expectations, why they were reasonable, how Ward fell short, and any kind of comparison to other sophomore QBs. You're going down Ed/sponge/Biggs route of complaining about everything and not doing something simple to educate yourself. Just "expecting more" for no articulable reason. Sounds like whining to me. If you want to label that ignorance or laziness instead, I would probably agree.

Show me a sophomore QB that wasn't inconsistent?
There’s probably plenty who were inconsistent. There’s also probably plenty of these guys who are competing for the starting position for next year as well with other good QBs in their camp.

It’s fine to agree to disagree. You are of the opinion Ward was solid enough last year where he should be handed the starting job. I think he was good at times and bad at times, with some ok in between and Mateer should be given a fair opportunity to win the job. Historical QB stats are still largely meaningless IMO. If you have some stats to back up your thesis that Ward should be untouchable based on other CFB QB performances from last year, that’s fine too. That’s not going to matter to Dickert, Arbuckle, any others who are evaluating the position, but feel free to share if you feel it strengthens your position.

We're talking about your thesis. Like Ed, sponge and Biggs, you try to change the subject when you spout off with nothing to back it up. My thesis is don't judge a QB by his sophomore performance. You on the other hand will, with nothing to back that up, coupled with a refusal to lift a finger to back it up. That's fine. Message boards are a great place for the lazy and ignorant.

If only there was a website that compiled stats....

FWIW, my commentary on Gesser's punts had nothing to do with the AC. That was a CF where the whole team pissed down their leg when Gesser went down.
Actually, they weren't playing that well before Gesser went down. But they fell all to pieces without him.

I thought Green getting hurt and leaving the game was the death knell.

WHichever injury we pin it on, we underperformed from the opening kick. We were 9-1, playing at home, the #3 team in the nation, with a faint flicker of hope for an NC berth. UW was mediocre and barely above .500. The game should have been over at halftime.

The problem was, we knew that. And we played like we thought UW would just roll over. They didn't.

You know, you could save yourself a lot of time and keyboard strokes if you would just simply say More Bubble.

Whether you are using stats or your eyeballs you are judging him by his sophomore performance either way. You see some numbers I see a guy who, while he has some nice skills, also has some serious flaws that will continue to hinder his success unless they are addressed.

I’ve already said I don’t think Morris helped him based on some of the play calling we saw. I hope he grows by leap and bounds and leads the conference in passing. I have nothing against Ward. I do find it surprising there’s multiple people here who think Ward should be handed QB1. While he’s of course going into camp tabbed as #1 for now I’d be shocked if Dickert isn’t looking at this as an open competition, and Mateer sure seems to be keeping pace. And while I appreciate your homework, I promise you Dickert gives two shits about QB stats from last year or any other year, and he’s making that call.

Your thesis is about you, and your expectations. Why do you bring Dickert into it? I'm sure Dickert wants more out of every player on the roster. Nothing surprising there.

After multiple opportunities you are still refusing to discuss your expectations, why they were reasonable, how Ward fell short, and any kind of comparison to other sophomore QBs. You clearly have nothing to back it. Carry on with your shit posting.

FWIW, my biggest critique about Ward is that although he wasn't the only problem, he seems uniquely suited to make bad situations worse. And statistics almost never tell the whole story. JDL was not a bad QB statistically, but we all saw him morph into Bad JDL at times and cost us games because of bursts of ineptness and incompetence. Ward is cut from that same cloth except with even more conservative play calling causing every mistake to be magnified.

Brink's tendency to throw pick sixes when he was younger made me understand why people were ready to see him go, but I also had seen how ineffective Josh Swogger was in extended play so I viewed Brink as the lesser of evils. So yeah, I judged him, but unlike Mateer, we all knew that his backup was a guy who lacked the finesse that's needed to balance out the rocket arm. Mateer may stink in extended play, but we don't know that.

As far as Gesser and Leaf, both were gunslinger QB's with high risk but high reward. Their stats weren't always great when they were younger, but you could tell that all they needed was polish and experience. With Ward, it's more, "he needs to improve at everything if he's going to be good" and "if our OL play doesn't improve, he's hosed!".
