Deion James Commits

Appears to be a pretty good pickup at this point. Missed all of last year with an injury but was Colorado State's 3rd leading scorer & rebounder his junior season. He was one of the best JCs in the nation his sophomore season:

Spent his sophomore season at Pima Junior College, garnering numerous honors including the NJCAA Division II National Player of the Year... Started in 33 games and averaged 20.6 points (tops in the league), 9.6 rebounds (No. 2), 3.5 assists and 1.0 blocks per game while also being named First Team NJCAA All-American, First Team All-Region and the Region I / Arizona Community College Athletic Association (ACCAC) Co-Player of the Year... Recorded 20 double-doubles while helping the Aztecs to a 22-win season, the most for the program since 1989-90, and 13 ACCAC conference wins, the best win total since the 2000-01 season... Pima won the Region 1 Championship after entering as the No. 2 seed and earned the No. 8 seed in the Division II National Tournament... In the Region 1 Tournament averaged 26 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.5 blocks, earning the Championship game’s Most Valuable Player award... Finished among the top of the national leaderboard in several categories, ranking sixth in free throws made (178) while shooting 77.4 percent from the charity stripe... Also finished in the in the top 10 nationally in points scored (680) and defensive rebounds (236).

Interesting pick up. Kent wanted this kid but was able to secure his signature on the dotted line as he elected to go to the more interesting Colorado St program under a better coach. Word on the street is he was excited by the possibility of being the ideal player in a system which truly values his strengths. Credit to Smith and staff for this one.

Any idea if he had other offers this time around?

Not sure, though I'm sure teams were sniffing around on him. Depends on how teams feel about his rehab of the knee.
He played 25 mpg, was averaging 10 and 5 in the Mountain West, one of the stronger Mid Major conferences. He'll provide some length and rebounding. He can score some and can play 20-30 minutes a night. Solid piece of the puzzle.

Glad to get the first recruit in and with D-1 experience. His visit wasn’t announced as far as I can tell. With so many to fill a grad transfer or 2 isn’t a terrible idea especially if they were to get a 1-year sit transfer.

I like this. It makes this team better and it frees up a scholarship after next season. We all know that recruiting is a lot of relationship building, so this allows them to continue to build relationships and have another scholarship available.

Would like to see 2 grad transfers , 2 jc kids, and 2 frosh with upside, assuming we have 6 to give.

Spot on. This late in the recruiting season, it's more challenging to find available HS players for the coming season. Makes more sense to look at the following season for those prep players, even though Smith needs to put together a roster for 2019-20. A couple of grad transfers can accomplish both goals by providing additional available scholarships next year.

Having said that, I'd be happy to welcome a couple of HS players in this recruiting cycle. Among the ones we've heard about are Noah Williams, Ronnie DeGray, DowDell, Kuany, and the Korean player. At least two of those kids would be great to add.

Looks like a solid get, a multi tooled player that Smith is looking for. Solid scorer, rebounder, and defender with some size and length. Also, solid from the stripe 70%+, and decent range for a forward.

Absolutely, Coach Smith nailed down a need for next year.

Would rather a couple of the 4 year transfers who have D1 experience instead of the JCs but that wouldn’t be a bad mix. Bonton looked like a potential good get from a JC.

Really would like Kuany, Lee, and DeGray. Kuany and Lee probably the most of the group. I have wondered what position Williams plays in college.

Hopefully the James commitment gets things going.

Same...

I'm little unsure if Williams is a good fit. Aren't there concerns over his outside shooting?

Another thing to keep in mind. Despite the depleted roster numerically, we have 4 guys returning ( counting Elleby hopefully ) with some starting experience from last year. One more decent big, and another pg plus a few bench guys would put us in position to exceed last years performance. Not unlike Dick Bennetts first year with Moore, Kelati and Schlatter returning. They won 7 conference games if I remember right

James is a good little player. I watched him play against MWC competition. He has average athleticism for a 6 '6 PF. He will not astound anyone with his athletic gifts and disappears against taller better athletes. He will play and that is why he choose Pullman. But he is the type of athlete Smith needs to recruit ,a willing cog in his offensive schemes.Kudos for this recruit

New here, but followed James throughout his career. James is a legit 6'8 and chose Wazzu because he wanted to play in Pac 12 for a coach who knew his real game. He had other offers from Power 5s, but Coach Smith recruited James when he was at SF and knows what he can do. This is a good fit!

Any insight into his recruiting this time around? It flew under a lot of radars.

Believe it or not I found it strange James was now listed at 6'6" when I remembered a couple years ago seeing him listed at 6'8". What's his "real game"?

Now in addition to James, a solid get. Smith gets Isaac Bonton JC Transfer hybrid PG/SG/Scoring Off Guard.

21 ppg. 43% field. 36% 3 pt. 5.6 Assist Per Game. 5.6 rebounds. 6 ft 3 in. Highest ended 3 star.

What a freaking Awesome get.

Add to that Henson decides to stay not decommit.

So 1 grad transfer, that hybrid 3,4, at 6 ft 6 to 6 7, to 6 8, 1 JC, Hybrid PG/SG combo guard, 6 ft 3. 1 HS big.

Now just need 1 more transfer, preferrably a 3 to play 2,3.

And 1 more HS player.

Preferrably at least 1 of the players a 6 ft 5.5 in Hybrid PG/SG/1,2,3,4

And Preferably a CENTER big man

But already a awesome start.

If Smith keeps this up, I can see things getting turned around, 500 season, postseason, CBI/NIT bubble, year 2, next season after this coming season.

I think Isaac Bonton is comparable, like unto a combination of Terrence Lewis, Bennie Seltzer, Neil Derrick, all combined into one.

By Year 2 in Smiths system I could see him putting up 15,16,17,18,19,20 ppg, 5 rebounds per game. 6,7 assist per game. 3 steals per game. 1/2 block per game. Lockdown down defender. Awesome ball handler. Low turnovers, good team captain, court general, awesome court vision. Awesome athleticism. Slasher, driver, finisher at rim, dunks, lay ups. Awesome freethrow shooter from charity stripe. Good shooter. Good 3 point shooter. Awesome passer. Lots of Assist.

Not saying he will do that. Just see potential.
