Coach Mike Leach at WSU: 2012-2019

Overall record: 55-47 (Previous 8 seasons: 35-75)

Pac-12 record: 36-36 (Previous 8 seasons: 15-55)

IMO, the talent level, program culture and football facilities are much improved from when Leach followed Coach Paul Wulff eight years ago.

As a result, I believe the next coach is going to win at an even higher percentage than CML.

That depends entirely on who we get, the talent they can get, the completion of the IPF, strength and conditioning, and the fortunes of the other teams in our league. With the Pac as crap as it is right now, I guess it's a good time to start again

Who knows, but if your expectations are to win at a higher level than leach you are crazy. Washington state is the hardest place to win in the Pac 12 and leach had a great run once he had his own players. From years 4-8 the program was humming. You likely wont get another wulff, but a bill doba level coach is my prediction. A coach who is fighting to get to 6 wins each year.

I dunno. Cal, UofA, Oregon State, Colorado, UCLA arent really killing it. Pullman isnt the worst or the hardest place in the league. Its a better job than most of the league.

Why the negativity Eekurts?
Mike Leach has been the most successful coach in the school’s history. The next guy isn’t beating his amount of wins.

Not saying the next guy can’t be successful, but odds are he’s not sticking around 8 years if he IS successful.

Well said Biggsy.

Which programs would you rank below and above the Cougs at this point in time?

SC UO uw are prob doing the best right now.

I think a lot of teams are just average. They have some things going for them but miss the mark on the others.

WSU, ASU, Utah, Stanford, UCLA, CU are all close. Have some things going for them but also against them.

Oregon State, Cal, Arizona are crap.

*Whispers* We've had a better coach than they've had in those places.

OSU and Gary Andersen is a prime example of how even good coaches can struggle at under resourced programs. The guy won everywhere and splattered like a bug on a windshield in Corvallis despite Reilly and Erickson winning there.

Not sure if he’ll win more total but it will be a long time before WSU wins 38 over a 4 year period.

I'm pretty sure even if Leach had stayed, we wouldn't have won at the same level as the previous 4 years. I think next year especially would have been very tough. I think that's one of several calculations that Leach was making when he decided to bolt.

So it's going to be kind of an unfair apples to oranges comparison for the next coach who comes in. We need serious help on D and it's going to take more than a year to do that.

I think odds say it will be less. But, we will have to see who the next coach is and who are his assistants.

My odds in order of probability (my own)

winning less
winning way less
winning the same
winning more

Leach was heading for another 6-6 season next year. Now I think we'll take our lumps. It does give us the opportunity to use this next year to pivot to whatever the next coach wants to do. I think we could be ready to return to a bowl in 2021.
