Don’t know if anyone heard this about Mateer

It’s why he was the #1 QB in the portal this year.

It’s really sad how little respect he got from Cougar “fans”

I think we as WSU fans all enjoyed watching Mateer play and I think we had a better season with him than we would have if Cam Ward had stayed. His mobility and ability to make first downs on QB runs was critical to our success. If you are talking about fans bitching after he left...well, that's just fans.

If you are talking about the fans who said that his running ability masked the fact that he wasn't always the best passer, I would argue that he regressed as the year went on and he started thinking too much. There's a damned good chance that Zevi was the best QB on the team this year but Mateer was the better running back. Mateer was mediocre in passing in our games against Texas Tech, UW, Fresno State, and Wyoming. He ran wild on Texas Tech so it didn't matter and our defense played lights out against the mutts. We lose to Fresno State if not for the defense and a couple critical turnovers. He was just off against Wyoming (as was the whole team) and their defense turned him into a mediocre runner.

It will be interesting to see if Mateer can get into the Heisman conversation at Oklahoma and he'll see some positive pub early....but he's stepping into an extremely dicey situation in Norman. The Sooners were an overall average team this year and their 2025 schedule is a total bee-otch. This is their schedule....

Illinois State - W
Michigan - tossup
@ Temple - W
Auburn - W
Kent State - W
vs Texas - L
@ South Carolina - L
Ole Miss - L
@ Tennessee - L
@ Alabama - L
Missouri - tossup
LSU - L

They get a lot of home games but they could easily lose 6-8 games next year. It would not be a huge surprise for them to start out 5-0 and get ranked in the Top 10 but lose the remaining games to finish the season. Mateer was a pleasant surprise for us but his wonky sidearm throwing motion when he breaks down under pressure combined with his non-stellar measurables are going to make it hard for him to be successful in the NFL. The broken tackles against mediocre teams on our schedule will not happen in the SEC and NFL. I won't be rooting for Mateer next year but I won't be rooting against him.

I agree and It won’t be because of Mateer it will be because of Arbuckle. I’m a lot harder on Arbuckle than Mateer and place the lions share of the blame on the 2nd half offensive ineptitude we had on Arbuckle. It wasn’t an execution problem it was a play calling, game flow, adjustments problem. Oklahoma fans will want to fire Arbuckle after one season. I’m happy Mateer got paid and think he’s a wonderful talent and seems like a great kid. I also think Arbuckle will F up his development in the SEC.

I think he picked the wrong team to transfer to. Their O line may be a big problem. I think they lost some key players and were not necessarily getting good replacements in the portal. We will see.

Is Arbuckle the guy to help Oklahoma? Agree that is very debatable. I don't blame Mateer for taking the money, but Oklahoma is in a precarious situation and their coach could very well be fired next season.

IMHO, Mateer played as well as he could and never gave up or took his foot off the gas later in the season (unlike Cam). He is more of a competitor than Cam. His running ability was as good as any QB in FBS this season. His sidearm pass delivery made him prone to deflections. His seeming inability to go through his progressions continually cost him some wide open receivers. He did seem to have good chemistry developed with the receivers in terms of judging where to throw. He also seemed to get better at reading defenses as the season went on; which was more than counterbalanced by DC's having a better idea of how to defend against a Mateer/Arbuckle offense. Why Arbuckle never went very far toward a true RPO is a mystery to me. Our offense became extremely predictable by mid-season.

Agree that while Mateer is far from perfect, Arbuckle was the greater problem. If OU can't protect him he will get happy feet, just like he got with us in those games when we had trouble with the pass rush. The first clue will be whether or not he looks past the second receiver next season. Where OU may be able to help him is with a better running attack; that should help somewhat if they can manage that against the competition they face.

As for Flat's run down of the schedule, I see more than 2 SEC wins if Mateer stays healthy. I suspect they will get at least 3 and quite possibly 4. The thing that is likely to hold them back is Arbuckle. The guy was not a great success at WSU. It is hard for me to see him being a great success at OU. There was no excuse for the late season crashes of the last 2 seasons; I put most of that on Arbuckle. If he does not improve, then maybe there will only be 3 SEC wins. And if Mateer gets hurt (which I profoundly would not like to see), then Arbuckle is likely to go down the drain.

You don't? I think the last 3 games looked to me like much lower effort. IMHO, many are giving too much credit to the defenses.

OU isnt paying either of them all this $$$ to win 3-4 league games. They will both be fired if that’s the case.

If you look at the last 20 years, it makes sense to assume that Oklahoma should be favored against Auburn, Tennessee, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Missouri. Those are teams that have struggled to be consistent so even if they were good in 2024, it stands to reason that they are ready to fall off a bit.
