It would make some sense. He wanted to work for Leach. Then left to be DC at UTEP. He's at UW now.

He could coach LBs and be the DC.

Then hire a solid secondary coach. Or, split the safeties and the dbs up.

Graham Harrell to coach DB's? I think that guy to do magic on the recruiting trail.

NO! Don't do it! Choate?

Don't consider Choate until you watch this recent video from the Seattle Times.
Fine by me.

Jeff Chate returns?

I would be very surprised if Choate were the choice. He left to become a DC, but took another job as a ST Coordinator before he ever worked at that job. He bounced around. I don't see Choate getting the job at all, especially as the Cougars already have a linebackers coach in Ken Wilson.

He went to work on Peterson's staff as a ST coach and DLine coach... with becoming a DC at a major school soon. What if this has been the Long term plan all along?

watch the video. This is one sharp guy on a meteoric rise up the coaching ladder. He KNOWS Leach... and WSU... and the Pac-12... and defense... and now, the inner workings of UW... and still... he wants to return? Knowing the task at hand? Knowing the bare cupboard and challenges? Knowing the incoming 4* monster speedy defenders coming in this class? that UW job was a big resume builder for a young aspiring guy. You can't hold that against him.

Choate is a guy that will want to build a resume based on his own body of work.

If he "turns WSU around" or into a great conference defense, it opens up some bigger doors.

He's a guy that's not going to stay at WSU long. Which is fine, if he can right the ship and hand the keys over to someone else.

Re: You want a resume at this point that is a maybe?

What about Scott Pelluer for the other coaching spot?

He coaches TE's and ST's at UW right now...he's a good fit to fill Volero's spot at LB's coach(promote Wilson to DC), and could take on ST's as well.

Obvious ties to WSU and the Western WA high school pipelines.

I personally wouldn't support the Choate hire. Honestly, I can't see it happen, either.

The weird thing is, we all know CML has his list of candidates. I'd love to be the fly on the wall of his office right now, just to peek at that list.

ED - Leach is going to hire a guy that can work with the existing staff and existing talent.

You aren't going to see some wholesale change in defensive strategy, which might set us back a season or two.

You are going to see a guy that can come in here, do a better job of managing the game from the booth and a better job of working with his coaches to put the best players on the field.

If you believe the above, the list of candidates is small.

Mike Smith, former LB coach for the Jets will take that position

He will be the linebacker coach or DE''s coach, however the new staff takes shape.

It won't be Choate, he's great at getting fired up but toxic. He didn't coach a single game as DC at UTEP

Mike smith just got the DC job at his alma mater Texas Tech with the frat boy coaches in Lubbock
