That is EK's buyout for the next 4 years. So that is not going to happen. Moos really put the screws to WSU when he hired this coach and then when he kept rolling over his contract. Makes Bone's deal look good.

Bone is so bad he can't even Coach at SU or Portland anymore. This doesn't make us look good either but I feel not much for anyone that had the sweet heart deal he had. Working for GU for free apparently is also gone for Bone as according to my sources he is not seen on the bench this year.

Back-to-back horrible coaches has killed the hoops program for the forseeable future.

Hopefully Kent can pull a rabbit out of the hat next year. As for Bone,i am sure he was just getting in the way at GU.

Well Kent just turned 63. Kids are grown, I'm sure that he is more than set for life financially. Is he really going to want to hang out in Pullman for 4 more years as a dead man walking? You can bet there will be no more rollovers of his contract. Recruiting will get worse not better. My $5 says that he will "retire" in a year with a reduced buyout as his incentive.

On the women's side, CJD is 61. She and hubby can't be hurting either, she has been a head coach for 30 years now and I imagine that he has tagged along for most or all of that time. With her health issues I can see her announcing a retirement soon as well. No idea what her contract and/or buyout look like.

WSU has been doing great in Soccer, getting back up there in Volleyball in the toughest league in the country. No reason why Women's BB can't follow?

So our new AD will soon have a chance to earn his paycheck for more than just fundraising. Might be a good opportunity to promote turning a new page in Cougar Basketball and solicit some $ from people.

I do not think that Kent sees himself as "a dead man walking" Kent will be around for another 2-3 years for sure. The old codgers always think they have a little left in the tank.

Just an FYI, it helps to follow your comments if you "reply" to whatever post you are replying to. In a little town like Pullman, when the crowds dwindle to Paul Graham levels, his contract starts shortening, and nobody wants to pal around with him, I think he will realize that he is a dead man walking.

If you live there ,then please let me know what is happening. However, the coaches in Pullman will not lack for friends in a small town. It is much easier to survive in a small town than a huge metropolitan city where the kooks come out of the woodwork to tar and feather the coaches.

No way is Kent going to walk away from $1.4M a year unless he's just "beat down" or has a family or medical issue. As of 2014 June/Mike were making $430K collectively. Again, I am doubting they walk away unless it's counter to health.

Bill Snyder is 78! and still coaching so age is becoming smaller and smaller especially compared to the salaries numbers.

I believe you've nailed it, 71. Maybe Elleby can help right this sinking ship.

I asked on brandx where Bone was and the answer was Mill Creek, WA. I find it strange he hasn't found a staff to land on. I know the whole daughter angle but still seems odd even if factual.

Uh, explain please....

And to your other post on CJD's health. You know she went on leave because of her health, right? So yes there is a health issue. And EK? at 63, you think he needs to hang on for a few more years to collect a paycheck so he can retire financially secure? Not everyone wants to hang around until they die on the field like Bill Snyder. Hell, even he retired once.

I sure as hell don't plan on dying at my desk. As soon as the numbers look good, I'm retiring. A year at 1.4 million and I would be set for life. Might even be able to afford the occasional trip to Puerto Vallarta. Ole'.

It was reported Bone wouldn't take a job outside of the area of his daughter's school until she graduated. I don't know how much I buy it but she has since graduated.

On Daugherty, she had health issues technically before she started at WSU. That was how many years ago? She has Hristova and Molina for 2 more years and another Molina coming in. McClure starting to play at a different level. I don't see her wanting to step away from that potential unless she really doesn't have a choice.

As for Kent, you have an almost guaranteed $2.8 to $4.2 million doing something you probably enjoy and you are going to walk away? Snyder is an outlier for sure but in general coaches aren't wired to stop until they have to or are forced out.

Yeah i watched part of Kent's recent interview. Kent does not talk like a "dead man walking". He ,of course,is optimistic and talks continually of his young team.Daugherty may have to resign because of health concerns. It is hard because somehow her husband is also employed as a coach. That arrangement was a terrible decision on the past AD s part.

Kent has always been optimistic. But sine his Oregon last two years has faded and faded. 2-16, 7-11 then at WSU 7-11 (with Bone's Boys, 1-17, 6-12, and now 1-5. Optimism doesn't win games.

Lots of husband and wife teams in Women's sports and June's husband has been there for a long time they are a team.

Don't forget that the 2018 WBB the two Tsineke twins. That's the main difference between June and Ernie. She recruits very well in the best WBB league but there has always been discussion about floor coaching.

BLASPHEMY! The past AD NEVER more poor decisions and was solely accountable for the MASSIVE television revenue package the non-LA schools in the conference received.

What's that? There are also 9 other AD's in the conference who may have influenced the revenue sharing decision?!?! Again - BLASPHEMY!

Oh fer gawd's sake. its been 10 years and very year it is the same thing - oh we have so and so coming in next year or the year after. We are young, we are on the brink. You might as well just copy these posts and paste them in next year. And the year after, and after, and after. But remember to change the names......

It would not surprise me if June retired. It would be a good time as far as WSU is concerned because I think with our line up we could attract a pretty solid candidate. If not I would like to see Mike take a step down the ladder and hire a up and coming hard charger young coach as second seat with the idea being to eventually take over.

I would like to see a complete change in the WBB program. The assistant coaches have not made the team a well coached team It is time for a change, perhaps throw out the practice basketballs etc..The idea that WSU should keep coaches around because they are nice guys ,have a family etc has to stop. It is a business and if the coaches are not producing release them if it is economically feasible.

"If it is economically feasible" always complicates our decisions. I would assume we still have the smallest budget in the Pac 12. We just increased salaries in football and are paying through the nose for the only other realistic revenue producing sport in men's basketball. For lack of a better word from an athletic department perspective our "fundamentals" are a bit out of whack.

I believe we have fired the last 3 women's basketball coaches. Doesn't mean we shouldn't let another go but why has it been so hard in women's basketball? It's tough to compete in the Pac 12 but same deal in women's soccer and volleyball where we have had a lot more success over the years. Bottom line, given our economic state I doubt we will do too much with anything not football or men's basketball if it involves paying coaches not to coach.

Fixed your post.

Oh and I looked around and see that Moos extended CJD through 6/30/2022. Thanks Bill.

So both Kent and Daugherty have 4 year left on their contracts? That's $6.8 million (Kent $1.4/Daugherty $310K) unless they opt out plus whatever it would cost to hire new staffs.

If you are Chun do you take a $7 million hit or wait it out? Unless they retire I think he waits at least 2 more years hoping to ultimately make improvements in the programs before they leave to make the jobs more attractive. Daugherty is probably safer.

I don't think he's going to put himself another $7 million in the hole but that's just a hunch.

Completely agree, except I hope he only waits one year. No extensions/rollovers. If one or both can show some significant improvement in 18-19, then they stay another year (but still no rollover/extension). I don't think the lack of a 4-5 year contract term is going to hurt recruiting any worse than their ages/health already do/will.

And as mentioned elsewhere, I like the idea of getting a potential coach-in-waiting into the fold on the Women's side. Mike just needs to go. He can spend his time buying and fixing up their retirement property. Or properties. On the men's side, not so much. We need a complete break when EK goes.

Well, I guess we have this all solved. I think it is time for a Baynes update.........

I don't see how a coach in waiting would work practically. June has made the comment "this is a family business" so don't see her going for it. Bill Guthridge at UNC, Sean Sutton at OK State did end up too well. Boheim wouldn't retire and Hopkins finally moved on. Any bets on how Tommy Lloyd will do whenever Few steps aside?

It's not that it's a bad idea. I just wonder how it would practically work.

Well here's an idea. Chan fires Mike (or doesn't renew his contract - I hope to H*** he doesn't have a 4 year deal too). June can deal with it or retire. Pretty sure that the AD has the authority to hire and fire anyone in the Dept.

Coach in waiting has worked in some situations. Jimbo Fisher at FSU comes to mind. And of course Tony Bennett, but there is that family angle.

That's definitely a way to go. Mike's deal has to be year-to-year right?

The spouse team thing is interesting. We have it in volleyball (currently and under Frederick) and the UW's new women's basketball coach has her spouse on the staff.
