Florida State. Go Ducks

why would anyone take fleck or venables over leach ?

Younger. Venables has been very successful at OU and Clemson. Im surprised he hasnt landed a head job yet. Fleck is on the fast track to a big time job. He is a recruiter and motivator. If Im the AD of a school in the South I give him a long look.

I’m surprised that people ask why Leach isn’t respected more. First of all, he his. He’s regarded to be one of the best offensive innovators of all time. He’s won coach of the year awards. He’s had two successful gigs at P5 programs.

He also has some baggage and some question marks, which have hindered him from getting blue blood looks. He had an ugly, public scandal with a former employer. He has an atypical offense that never runs the ball. That’s not what blue blood programs look for.

He’s a wonderful coach, and I love him at WSU, but I’m not surprised that the whale programs shy away.

Whomever they hire, FSU will be on their 5th head coach in the last 10 years. That is crazy.

FSU has enough pedigree and recruiting clout that they can run any system they want, but the system that seems proven to win championships is not a gimmick (I say that lovingly) offense like the pure Air Raid. Understand the Florida appeal with Leach, but I suspect they want to recruit 4* and 5* to run something more traditional. Also, Leach being a maverick and not cowing to internal or external pressure to change or adapt doesn't make him seem like a good fit for what is a pretty buttoned-down school I would think. Don't sense that they want to give free rein at a school like that, but who knows how desperate boosters are after years of struggle?

Florida State doesn’t need to worry about finding someone who does more with less. They have more and more in terms of money and recruiting pipeline.

I’m thinking about this from FSUs perspective. Bob Stoops or Leach? Stoops, easy. Fleck or Leach? Fleck. Venables or Leach? Venables.

Another thing to consider is how the FSU boosters, who are unbelievably involved in the programs decisions, will react if they bring in a 2nd consecutive P12 coach from the Northwest.

Who said they would look for someone who has done more with less> I simply said he has achieved with less, and folks can then translate (imagine if he had our resources) . They respect him because his results don't match "doing more with less".

You don't think Tennessee is saying WTH right about now?

Tennessee is insane, they screwed the pooch horrible and their ad that was fired has to be laughing. Fat Phil Fulmer should be banned from Knoxville for 100 years.

Hilarious to think we were actually reading boosters who were angry about the possibility of a Leach hire because their program was too big time to settle for a novelty offense. Those people should get a black 'x' on their driver's license for misplaced, outsized self importance.

What I'm saying is that Florida State doesn't need Leach. Neither does Tennessee. Those programs can repeatedly throw up on themselves and still sell out their games and rake in the cash.

Tennessee more than likely regrets their decision, no question; but the top candidates I've seen mentioned on the Florida State search rumor board is an elite prospect.

Another rhetorical question best saved for another question is why Leach has been passed over by the big kid programs throughout his career? He's a winning coach, runs a tough, but honest program, has a great coaching tree, yet there's something that has kept him from landing a big-time shot. There's something secretly written in the administrator tea leaves that says watch out for Leach. Otherwise, he’d have been offered a long time ago.

while leach was at tech, the good ole boys football traditionalists, could never get comfortable with leach not running a conventional offense-balanced with a strong run game and they thought he was nuts for going for it on 4th down instead of punting and playing the field position game.

That is the bias you see from most of these schools. They just cant handle an air raid attack that only "fringe" schools such as Hawaii, BYU and Houston use. A "gimmick" offense. I think they are morons...…..but that mind set is the norm.

Help me on how this is their 5th head coach in 10 years. Bowden for 30 plus years, then Jimbo for 8 years, and the short term Taggert.

Yeah, that's kind of a bogus claim. I think they are counting Odell Haggins twice as the interim coach after Fisher left and now with Taggart gone. Really, only 3 coaches in 10 years. Good catch.

Glad Cougar

Bowden coached '09 and the new guy - who will likely be announced this year - makes 5 in 10 years
