Gameday Commercials

You're right about Herbstreit. I spoke with him after waving Ol' Crimson in Boise. He was incredibly sincere about WSU being "relevant " again and getting to Pullman with Gameday. Shook my head and told me we had the most dedicated fan base in college football.

I thought I heard that the Flag Bearer got in a fight at the 2003 Bowling Green Gameday defending the flag.

Any truth?? Or just legend?

Not so much a fight as some rowdy Bowling Green fans snatched the flag and broke the poll. Classy since it was a female flag waver. This was no. 2 in the current streak. Long before it became a fixture on the show.

It was the wild west back then. The week before in Madison, I was simply trying to fly get the flag on TV. Wisconsin fans are pretty obnoxious and were throwing the hard hats given out at Purdue fans. I felt lucky our colors were similar enough for me to avoid most of the drunken antics of their fanbase. Afterwards, I had Corso and Herbie sign the flag. Lee didnt say anything to me but Kirk seems amused by the whole thing.

The next year I went back to Madison and it was a completely different experience. Yaki's brother showed up as well, Wisconsin fans recognized the flag from previous weeks, and the on air personalities were excited about the new tradition. Honestly, had it not been for the lost decade, I think they would have come a lot sooner to Pullman.
