*gasp* another football thread!

Gardner lacks something to make him a starter . You think he can go toe to toe with Allen in Buffalo? Burrow? Mahomes?

If you are looking to win big that is what you better have .

And getting paid 3 plus isn’t being treated bad .
As a broncos fan he could go toe to toe with any of the QBs they’ve had there since manning. I’ve maintained Minshew is not or never going to be a top 15 QB but the perfect guy to plug in on discount for a team with a great defense. Take your savings on the QB contract and plug gaps in your roster like Oline.

Broncos grab him for a 6th a few years ago with that defense and a veteran backup salary they may have another SB trophy.

Not sure how mobility plays into not having a pass longer than 8 yards in the playbook for GM
Lack of confidence in him determined the play calling. Low trade value interest has kept him at the level he's been. The NFL doesn't often miss on QBs. Every now and again a player comes back from the backup abyss and performs, but 95% of the time the organizations get it right.

GM has had a fantastic collegiate and professional career. He's living a dream that a fractional miniscule number of players will ever experience. He's set to earn a base salary of $1.75M in 2023. He started games in Philly. He started games in Jax. He started and won on ESPN Game Day and his NY6 Bowl game. His NET worth is a reported $5M. Most importantly, he's a bright, upbeat kid with a great head on his shoulders and he'll be able to pursue a lot of opportunities when his playing days are over.

GM is doing just fine.

Well, you just lost any and all credibility with that statement right there.

Gotta concur with you there Bleed. I can't find it now or I'd link it, but I recently read one of those pop-up articles on the web listing all the QB bombs in the NFL. Heath Shuler, Rick Mirer, etc. etc. A good read. Including of course our own Ryan Leaf.

Missing on QBs in the draft wasn't the context I was referring to.

What I meant was that the NFL doesn't cut or give up on future star QBs very often. The draft is a completely different situation, and it has nothing to do with where GM is in his career. There's starting NFL game film on GM with multiple teams, and nobody's courting him to be their starting QB.

Once NFL teams roster a QB and put him to task, they know. Rarely do they walk away from someone of high value. It happens occasionally, but not very often.

FWIW, it's difficult to argue for or against your statement. If a future star QB gets cut and doesn't get picked up.....it's impossible to know if he would have ever matured into something great.

When I did a search for QBs who found success after being cut, I found an article where the Pittsburgh Steelers had cut Johnny Unitas, traded away Len Dawson and traded Earl Morrall as they wallowed in mediocrity in the 1950's and 60's. All three won Super Bowls with other teams and two of them are in the hall of fame. Now, you can argue that was 100 million years ago and you wouldn't be wrong, but I'm betting that there are plenty of QB's who never got their shot at the brass ring. No way to really know.

Well….off the top of my head, Steve Young and Brett Favre both may have been stuck as backups if it wasn’t for injuries to Joe Montana and Don Majkowski. I’m quite sure there are other very good QBs who could have been much more, but never got their chance.

The list that is much longer though, but also almost impossible to actually make, is the QBs who could have been very good if they’d landed with the right team/system at the right time. Young is an example - Tampa judged him a bust and dumped him to San Francisco. They got 2nd & 4th round picks for him and thought they’d fleeced the 49ers pretty well. Pretty sure they actually got burned on that one.

Imo, qb is the most poorly coached and evaluated position in football. From youth to the NFL.

For the sheer volume of resources poured into the position, the ROI is piss poor.

I sort of agree. Look at Brady, the GOAT. Most of his throws went about 15 yards. Hell I could make those. Paying 30-40-50 million for any player in any sport is just obscene. Spread that money around to the TEAM.

Jim Plunkett. Brett Favre. Phillip Rivers?? Brees?? Didn't all of them find greatest success with the new team, although they may not have been cut.
