Graduation traditions

How do you feel about that?
At the time, I was pretty pissed. Especially Dr Wang. The first test was brutal. I walked out feeling ridiculously dumb. I thought, "Crap! If I can't pass this, how will I get a degree at all?" In the end, turns out he was a pretty damn nice guy who would work with anyone for hours to help understand the material.

The fact that it was a "weed out" test is what bothered me. If I didn't have the guts to stay in figuring I might pull it out, I would never have found that out.

Terri Feiz went on to head up Oregon State’s College of EE and ultimately got railroaded out of there in a political power play. Complete travesty. IMO an outstanding and truly remarkable person who deserved better.
Dr Feiz was a straight up biatch. She was not a nice person. I'm not surprised it happened to her. However, she was a damn good teacher, even though she hated it. From what I heard, she left WSU because they would not let her do research full time, but requiring her to do some teaching.

And I will say thanks to her I landed a 6 month co-op at Intel. When I went down to interview for a job in their standard cell design group (basically designing logic cells at the transistor level). I did this interview while taking EE476(?), the "Analog Integrated Circuits" class. At the end they asked me "How do you know CMOS so well? There wasn't a single question you couldn't answer. You probably know transistors better than most of us." I answered, "Dr Feiz's class."

So, while I appreciate the opportunity I had to learn from her. I can't say I was sad to see her leave. She was mean, tough, demanding, and unforgiving. But she did a great job teaching.

Edit: And a lot of the stories I heard were from her grad students. She was a slave driver. They hated working for her, but recognized how smart she was and how studying under her would be helpful. I don't think she'd make it today with the latest generation. She'd have complaints coming out her ears nowadays. She might survive, but it would be a chore.

What's ridiculous is that these emo generations have been a) told that they don't have to tolerate anyone hurting their precious feelers and b) not told that most of this shit is temporary, and if you just stick it out you'll be the better for it, one way or another.

But whatever, they'll all be running the world in 20 years, glad I won't be long for the earth by then.

Gawd do we have to wait that long? How about this edit:

"But whatever, they'll all be running the world in 20 years, glad I won't be will long be for the earth by then."

So planning on the human composting route then?

Wow. I never once heard anyone badmouth Terri Feiz. Ever. In fact I knew quite a few people who took her analog ic course the first two years she taught it who would tell you without hesitation that she was their favorite instructor at WSU. Period. She was very well liked by the students I knew. I personally found her very approachable and very personable.

Your comments make me recall a female classmate I had, one of only of 3 women in our entire electrical engineering class. She was a double major in Women’s Studies and EE. Her joke was that she spent her mornings in classes with man haters and her afternoons in classes with women haters. She had lots of tales to tell but the one that stood out was when she went to meet with her advisor ( a then long tenured EE Prof whose name escapes me ). She wanted career advice and he proceeded to sit back in his office chair, put his feet up on his desk and bluntly tell her that electrical engineering was no place for women.

Lots of misogyny in the world of EE, at least at that time, so I guess your comments shouldn’t come as a surprise. What’s that saying? A man is “tough” but a woman is a “bitch”. Sounds about right.

You misunderstand. Intentionally so I imagine.

I praised her teaching ability. Even her willingness to help out. But she was not nice. She routinely talked down to students (especially undergrads). She even told us at the start of EE476 that we shouldn’t even be in the class if we were too “stupid.” Yes, she used that word, but I can’t remember the rest of the statement word for word.

And the two grad students I knew—both foreign students—said she frequently demanded them to work weekends and holidays. Even from time to time calling them at home in the evening to get work done. One told me they cancelled their trip back to Hong Kong for a few weeks in the summer (I was doing a project with Dr Meador that summer and heard directly from him) because Dr Fiez not renew his RA for the fall if he left.

This is what I meant by jot a nice person. And what I meant by “biatch.”

And for men that acted the same way, I wouldn’t call them “tough,” I’d them them an a$$hole.

I never knew any professor like this (though I heard Dr Saberi could be like this to grad students, but when I had him in undergrad he was a great guy). But I did know plenty of bosses that fit that bill. And I gladly call them a$$holes.

So F off with your off base, ignorant condemnations.

Sounds right to me as well. And to your classmate - was she cute? How about the other 2? These are important details to the casual reader.

Lol. Well then… I’ll take your word that your experience with her was vastly different than mine and my peers which is very disappointing to say the least because I would even go so far as to describe her as warm and friendly towards me and my classmates.

But if a man is an “asshole” in your book but a woman who behaves similarly is a “bitch” and not an “asshole” as well you might very well be staring at a misogynist in the mirror.

I fail to see the difference between assholes and bitches in the insult arena. Time to change you handle to "WillieThe Woke", or better yet "WokeWillie". :)

Lol. You really are a 🐖 with a one track mind.

She was an attractive lady as much for her personality and intelligence as for her looks. Other classmate was cute but super skinny but a lot of fun to hang out with. Third gal was very attractive but I didn’t know her other than an occasional conversation. Funny aside along the whole misogyny theme - my feminist friend with the double major pointed out to me once how the attractive girl raised her hand in class - by sitting upright with her boob on the side of her raised hand thrusted forward. She was right. She said the girl probably had no idea she was doing it but it’s sadly what she probably subconsciously did in order to get noticed.

You clearly have no idea what “woke” means. Or the shit women have had to put up with from “asshole” men.

Well if you are an asshole, guess what comes out of you? Shit! :) :)

Believe me, I know all about women who have endured shit and much worse from asshole men. One of them (a woman) is sitting on my couch right now. I was married to another. I have dated several, one of whom's asshole now ex-husband brought home VD. And before anyone retorts, I am not the asshole in these pictures. I am the White Knight come to rescue them and show them what a nice and highly drug-free virile (not viral) man is like. And they like!!

You may debate and question the knowledge and wisdom of the Freyr-like (Norse God of Love) Loyal One, but spare your self/selves from the shame and embarrassment of questioning my vast knowledge of women. Understanding of them? Well that is a mountain that no man has ever scaled to the top. Now carry on.

This reminds me of a professor I had in a law & policy class. It was a tough class, with way more reading than any 300-level class should have. His approach made it harder for 50% of the class. If two students had exactly the same question, his response was based on a very simple criteria.
If you had a penis: “everything you need to know is in the reading. If you have to ask the question you didn’t read carefully enough, and I’m not going to waste my time with people who can’t read.”

If you lack a penis: “This course moves pretty fast through a lot of complicated material that isn’t always easy to understand. I’ve got a few minutes before my next class, let’s see if I can walk you through it.”

He made zero effort to hide it. We quickly learned to make sure all questions were routed through a woman. Unfortunately, his grading followed a similar pattern, so his class had two curves - one for guys, and a higher one for the girls. If you charted them his grade distribution probably looked like boobs….which may have been his plan all the time.

lol. I’m going to plead exhaustion for falling for you screwing with me.

So you think he was aware of it and not just doing it subconsciously? If so that’s just mind blowing. Wonder if he was trying to bang some of his female students too.

No worries. I had to plead exhaustion when my young and grateful abused honey was screwing me today.

And I think 95 is F-ing with us. If not, duh on the prof trying to bang the female students. Reminds me of a fairly young, good-looking and obvious woman-chasing prof, colleague for me, at one of my Universities (not WSU). He said he was a HS teacher, and went to the University for some muddy reason. Uh huh - you either got caught or got out from HS just in time for your co-ed lust, and came here to prey on the over 18 crowd. You can't fool the Rasputin-like Loyal One. :)
