Mazza /WSU should have won it. And it’s really not that difficult to see why.

Mazza/WSU 21-22 Field Goals, w/ a long of 51 yds.
Blankenship/Georgia. 25-31 Field Goals, w/ a long of 50 yds.
Duncan/Iowa. 29-34 Field Goals, w/ a long of 49 yds.

More CF bias, most likely of the SEC brand.
Blake, you were the best college kicker this year! Congrats!

Same issue as with preseason rankings. Ricardo was recognized as a front runner for the award because of what he did previously. You’re right he should not have won the award based on the fact that it’s best kicker this year, but my guess is most who voted didn’t know squat other than this kids name because of the big games he played in previously.

Good for Blake but these awards are becoming silly. I stopped paying attention to the Heisman when McCaffrey got screwed. Best statistical season ever put together by any position in major college football and he finished 2nd...stupid.

It just sucks that Mazza missed one against OSU. 22-22 would have made it borderline impossible to pick against him. He still should have won the award this year. Of course, if we don't choke against UCLA, ASU and Oregon......he probably wins the award. A kicker on a 9-3 team is obviously better than a kicker on a 6-6 team. (sarcasm)

Right or wrong, individual players are more likely to win national awards when their team does well. If Mazza had the same season last year when WSU won 11 games, I think he wins the Groza Award.

Glad Cougar

Agreed. No brainer.

Mazza is a boss. And I believe the pundits and voters do love SEC and B10 (some of which is earned) - but SEC bias isn't even necessary here.
  • Distance: 52% of "Hot Rod's" attempts were from 40+ which is a lot for college. Mazza: 19%.
  • Accuracy: Hot Rod 69% from 40+, Mazza 75% - but Hot Rod was also asked to kick from 40+ 4x more often
    • 2 Hot Rod misses were in the SEC CG by which time this award was realistically decided
  • Pressure: Hot Rod kicked in 4 games against opponents who finished ranked in CFP. Mazza: 2.
  • Quantity: Hot Rod was called on almost 50% more and has more points
Overall, 90 is right that they are also taking last year into account which they shouldn't, but Blankenship was asked to kick from farther, far more often, and under far more pressure, and still came up with some really good feathers in his cap.
