Guard help

He can shoot it. Scored 45 in a game last year. Seems to have good quickness as well. Comes down whether that translates from D2.

Player of the year highlights:

Roberts played at D-II UC San Diego. Averaged about 19 pts per game in 2019-20. 2 yrs of eligibility left.

45 points in a game, and 20 points per game at the D2 level translates to about 8 to 15 points per game, and 23 points in a single game.

As to about whether this transfer proves that Bonton supposedly not coming back.

This transfer proves no such thing.

Bonton could still choose to either stay or go.

Its good to get a transfer as insurance in case Bonton does leave.

And if Bonton stays, then the Transfer still helps.

I think the Transfer will average about 7 to 13 points per game depending on whether Bonton stays or not.

And in the Transfer's 2nd year, final year, I think the Transfer will get about 10 to 19 points per game.

I think the Transfer will be a nice piece for WSU at some point in the future.

I think this is another good get for Smith.

I like that he has a mid range game (not 100% reliant on the 3). How tall is he? I wonder how he defends.
He's listed at 5'11" so he's not very tall. With our length I don't think that's a big deal if his quickness translates I think we are fine.

It only matters what our staff believes but it does look like SDSU was on him pretty hard so that also says something about his ability. SDSU is not only a really good program but good on both ends of the court.

Does this mean someone is leaving?
If you assume Bonton and Miller don't come back (they are both seniors), that would free up 2 scholarships. HS point guard Myles Rice signed with WSU in the fall. Roberts would fill the other spot. Of course, Bonton and Miller technically could come back next year since the NCAA has granted all players essentially a free year in terms of eligibility. I"m guessing Bonton & Miller don't come back. There also could be the inevitable transfers that all programs seem to experience these days.

Is Chatfield on scholarship?
Could you see Warren transferring again for more PT? or do you think he is content in his role?

Bonton and Miller wouldn't count against the 13 scholarships if they come back. We are at 12 (11 returning plus Rice) and now 13 assuming Roberts is on scholarship.

WSU has 2,3 schollies for this recruiting class. 3 if a transfer.

I assume 1 of either Bonton or Miller is coming back.

I assume 1 of either Warren, Chatfield(if he is on scholly), or Rapp, transfering for PT.

I see Smith having a honest, frank, encouraging talk with Warren, Rapp, Chatfield(if on scholly), to free up a NEEDED scholly, for this recruiting class.

I see Smith getting 1 guard(Roberts), 1 CENTER, 1 best player available at any position, except, 3/Wing/Stretch 4.

I know that would be a over recruiting, oversigning, but I aee Smith doing that, and encouraging a player to transfer, or if that is unsuccessful, pulling the offer last second and going with 2 instead of 3.

WSU, Smith really needs to go with 3 in this class to keep the recruiting momentum going, and to help BALANCE out the recruiting classes, since taking 6(Dischon, EFE, TJ, Koul, AJ, Rosario, etc,), last recruiting class, UNbalanced the recruiting classes.

Only getting 1,2 in this recruiting class would not be good.

Roberts is a good start.

5 ft 11 inches is ok, good, if can play as good as Dominc Ellison played at that height, and if a PG, not just a scorer, and if passes good, makes good decisions, leader, ball handler, takes good care of ball, doesnt turn ball over, can drive, can hit floaters, runners, tear droppers, mid range jumpers, 3 pointers, shoots freethrows well, gets to the foul line, can drive, doesnt get charge fouls called when driving, plays good defense, can get ball pressure on ball handler without get blocking fouls, gets steal, gets 3,4,5,6 assist, is coachable, developable, is fast, quick, athletic, lateral quickness, good first step, has good moves like a good crossover, can break defenders ankles, shifty, can pass fake, ball fake, shoot fake, clever, crafty, in order to beat defenders off dribble, an to create shot, high bball IQ, works hard, lunch pail, etc.

If like that, 5 ft 11 in is just fine.

45 points in a game, about 20 ppg. BEST PLAYER IN ALL OF D2, probably get 6 to 11 ppg 1st year with WSU, and 9 to 18 ppg his 2nd year with WSU.

Also that SDSU tried their darnedest to get him, also speaks volumes as to how good he probably is.

AWESOME get by Smith, Just what Smith needed to get.

Chatfield is not on scholarship. I would expect Warren (also on walkon, non-scholarship) will have a hard time getting playing time next year with 6 scholarship guards on the roster....even assuming Bonton is gone.

Thanks to Save Ferris for clearing up the scholarship situation with any returning seniors not counting against the scholarship limit.

Glad Cougar

Getting an experienced true PG has to be right. He will fit in just fine with this group. Wow, people bringing up Dominc Ellison is a good thing! I note that Ike sez he looks good in that #2 Uni.

We beat out SDSU so that speaks volumes. His former D2 is now of course D1 so its quite a bit different that some teams. Tough players out of Sac.

Smith and the entire staff always seem to come up with the gem's when they need to do so.

This will also free up Jefferson to be what he really excells in a SG that can handle the ball.

Thanks for clarifying that up. For some reason I thought even with Bonton and Miller leaving we only had one scholarship because of how many we took in last year's class.

We sometimes look for player comps. He may be our new version of Josh Akognon. He transferred out, but he was good enough to play in the Pac 12 and had a long career overseas. If he can hit from the outside like he did last year, he is really going to open the court up for the rest of the team.

I think Josh Akognon is a good comparison. Might be more PG than Akognon but similar talent strengths and size. I do like that SDSU was hard on him and "here or there" someone posted Creighton was interested. They definitely like shooters.

I see some Bonton in him looking at the highlights. He will be a very mature JR transfer having opted out for COVID reasons last year and already redshirted I suspect he will be in the neighborhood of 22 next year

I too saw a little Bonton in him.

Someone mentioned our length and thought we'd be ok on the defensive end. Yes, all the players we have now have length, so it makes me wonder if he will fit into the system without that length. But I shouldn't worry, Smith and staff have proven to me they know what they are looking for. I trust him.

I forgot Warren wasn't on scholarship. He has helped us this year in a few games; and I'm sure in practice.

Love the trajectory of the program

Agree; similar style to Bonton. A few inches shorter, which might limit him a bit, but shorter is not all bad when bringing the ball up the court against pressure. I particularly liked his lateral quickness, which works at both ends of the floor. In watching his shot, he made me think of a Terry Kelly who could penetrate. As the bigs get more experience, it will be a bit easier for the perimeter guys to get better looks. I think he will be an asset.

If everyone didnt have length, like him, then there might be room for Worry.

But since there are plenty of players with length, then he should be ok IF:

See my post above where I described what a 5 ft 11 in point guard should do.

Im not going to take the time to dovthat again, but IF he is like:

1. Dominic Ellison

2. Bennie Seltzer

3. Even a bench player like Tyrone Maxy

Those players are, were the same size as Roberts at 5 ft 11 in, or close enough. If Roberts is like them, then his length wont be a problem as long as there are other players around him with length.

I too saw the vid, and see there is a little Bonton in him, which is both good and bad.

He is going to have a wake up call. He is not really tall enough to play the way Bonton does. He got away with it at the D2 level. But at the Pac 12 level he is not tall enough to play like Bonton. But I think he will learn, and adjust, adapt.

His mid range jumper, and his willingness to take what the defense gives him, will be key.

He does attack, beat players off of dribble, drive to the rim, for lay ups, but only does that if able, and if not able, either takes a runner, floater, tear dropper, mid range jump shot, or passes it, etc.

It will be key for him to do that at the Pac 12 level, and to NOT FORCE things, as he just doesnt have the size, etc, to force things, impose his will, etc, against Pac 12 players.

But like I said, he will probably learn, adjust, adapt.

I didnt know that Roberts is 22 as a Junior for his junior year.

That means his body, frame, athleticism, physique, will be fully developed, which can give him a slight advantage in bball play.

Physically, because he is 22, he is probably ready for Pac 12 play physically.

There will still be a learning curve mentally, talent, decision making, etc, as he is not tall enough to do at the Pac 12 level, What he was doing at the D2 level, but he will learn, adapt, adjust.

Just yet another reason why he is a awesome get for WSU/Smith

I saw some differences as well. Bonton tries to lay the ball up when he drives to the hoop. It was what drove some Cougar fans crazy, as he is sometimes off balance. Roberts is just as likely to pull up inside the key for a short jumper.

I noticed that as well. Thats what I meant by taking what the defense gives you.

Sometimes he does go all the way to basket and lay it up. Sometimes he does push it a little.

But sometimes he will drive, then recognize that he cant get to the rim, and either pulls up for a mid range jump shot, that is somewhere between just barely behind freethrow line, or just outside the paint to inside the wing of the 3 point line to inside the top of the Key.

He takes what he is given, whether thats a lay up, jumper, pass, etc.

He especially needs to do that at the Pac 12 level, because he will be defended better at the Pac 12 level, and his size or lack thereof wont permit him to do at the Pac 12 level, what he did at the D2 level.
