Option 2 would probably produce more wins but season ticket sales and donations would trend negative in a big way.
Season ticket sales are boned anyway. Spread the money around and bring what you can - winning will lure back some fans, and you’re more likely to win with a decent supporting cast.
Besides…if we do manage to hang on to Mateer, there’s a good chance we’re in the same position in a year, and he’s gone the year after no matter what.
Maybe the play in this scenario is to involve him. We give him 250 or 500K of this hypothetical pot, and then ask him where else we should put the money.
I agree. Mateer leaving could be a blessing in disguise. Buy a whole new D. WSU seems to always find a capable QB.
There are a zillion kids out there that want to run, catch and throw the football. They come and go. If you’re going to spend $$$, you pay for DNA. What does DNA mean? Enormous linemen and track star corners.

The problem with this hypothetical is that what ever amount Mateer turns down is not available to next man up. For example Northern Quest, that deal goes away. I also understand there to be collective “donations” that are specific to Mateer.
Yeah, besides what the cougs collective has, yes. Just meant to see what people thought of the overall worth of 1 player vs 6. At some point we’re going to reach the NFL model of cheaper QBs and paid OLine and Dlineman with good supporting staffs.
Reaching that model would be a benefit to the team. Overpaying for a QB is a common - but serious - mistake
