In a sweeping referendum on cheating in NCAA football

U$C has welcomed Reggie Bush back with open arms.

In all fairness, I can't help but put my tin-foil hat on and think that this was part of an effort to take U$S and the P10 down from their pedestal. There are cheaters (paid players/ extra benefits) all across the NCAA, known and proven (Scam Newton) and unknown who go unpunished, yet $C gets slammed and rightfully so.

As a Coug, I simply believe that we don't cheat due to the fact that we don't have big money donors making $1000 hand-shakes with recruits. We don't have recruits driving around in cars that they can't afford. We don't have Phil Knight "coincidentally" walking across the field and "bumping into" recruits for photo ops. Even if that were to happen on some scale, we'd still be outdone by the likes of big-donor schools like UW and $C. And to that end, I really despise the cheaters and the $C's of the world and when they got slammed, I was ecstatic.

However, screw tOSU and Bama and Clemson and FSU and, and, and... the multitude of other big $$ schools that you know are cheating year in and year out and the NCAA turns a blind eye.

Bleeder, what about the other possibility:

Cougs don't cheat because the vast majority of administrators, coaches, donors and fans believe in doing it the right way!

Reggie Bush took money. USC boosters paid money. They were given a prescribed consequence for those actions.

Both served the time.

As far as I know, it wasn't a lifetime ban on Reggie Bush/USC. He is a historic figure in their history and if both parties want a relationship, that's their prerogative. USC notified the NCAA and so it goes.

Felt the same way about Leaf. Feel the same way about Gesser. After an appropriate time of separation, meaningful relationships need to be healed.

Anthony McClanahan...not so much.

Me too.

If you're not cheating you're not trying. So what does that say about the Cougs?

If you're gonna go a decade without a bowl game you might as well have cheated. At least get some wins and then if the NCAA hammers you with ten years without a bowl game you had some good times to look back on.

Thanks 11.

Surprising a few here as well as at Brand X and Brand Y don't think a CouGreat like Jason Gesser deserves another chance at his own school.

Be willing to bet he could get the last couple million for the IPF in no time if Schultzie and Chun would give him a chance.

A) JG has yet to offer any real mea culpa, just a bs pr statement.
B) he was employed by the AD for several years and hadn't landed the big fish, what makes you think he'd do it now with a stained reputation AND no mea culpa? He was too busy playing good ol boys club and getting sh!tface drunk/ cheating on his wife to get any $$ for the school.

I LOVE what JG did for us, and I was half making excuses for him when news first broke until a couple of posters suggested "what if that was your daughter or wife he harassed?"

People grow and change all the time. Especially ones who get a second chance at their alma mater.

Other than a tasteless comment from time to time and getting a little handsy every now and then, what did Jason actually do wrong? Getting ****faced and cozying up with the good ol' boys/big boosters was straight out of the Bill Moos playbook. Most likely JG was simply following orders.

Agreed. Gesser is still in the denial stage.

I won't claim to be an Anthony McClanahan fan (he almost kicked my ass at Pete's one night....long story involving a blonde chick) but what did he do that puts him behind Leaf and Gesser in the anti-hero hall of fame?

On Gesser, I when he resigned, he did so with class not to distract from the school he loves.

If he's claiming innocence, or maybe has heeled privately with his loved ones, i don't think the public needs to be "apologized" too.

UW's heavy cheating in the 1950s never got them a bowl but instead led to John Cherberg being elected as Lt Gov for 32 years and the PCC dissolving (and WSC, OSC and UO without a conference).

Not very short version:
UW Boosters giving cash not for a good players (post Don Heinrich and Hugh McIlhaney) but for self importance, Cherberg (former Queen Anne HS coach) being paranoid over his OC plotting against him, Cherberg didnt get along with his paid players who basically mutinied against Cherberg (lazy players thought Cherberg was crazy).

When Cherberg got fired, he snitched on the payments and then ran for Lt Governor that fall.

Similar payments exposed at Cal and UCLA caused PCC to fold.

Again, Cougs seem to be more committed to "doing the things the right way" than their conference brethren.

Does anyone think Coach Wulff or Coach Leach would've signed off on paying recruits.

Coach Wulff was busted by the NCAA for not paying attention to the rules while coaching at EWU.
For punishment Coach Wulff had to miss a week of practices at WSU in 2008.

What do you think is gonna happen at MSU???

Do you think the juice boxes and orange slices during the CPW years were considered "extra benefits"? What about participation ribbons?

Remember Wulff was wanting guys to get seconds from the training table.

He did have at least two guys get popped for PEDs though.

What I think this really says about USC is that they have a very one sided view of the optics at work here.

I have several SC friends who believe that the university and Reggie Bush got slammed, but Pete Carroll got off free. I have not yet spoken with any of them about this, but based on their previous comments, they will probably tell me that the sanctions were served and every inmate eventually gets a clean slate.

it may be the only way to really compete, Oregon is clearly cheating now based on the status of their recruiting classes lately. cheating may be our only option

I have said for years that I think the West Coast is the most poorly recruited and poorly evaluated region in the nation.

Who as a PAC 12 HC really knows how to recruit? Has anyone in the league ever really taken a SEC approach to it? PC did well at SC but I think kids came because of him, not because he had an amazing strategy.

I wouldn't be surprised if UO had something on the side. I also wouldn't be surprised if MC learned something while at Alabama and is applying it at UO.

UO has money to spend rolling out the red carpet and private planes. They have facilities. They have a head coach with SEC pedigree that KNOWS what recruiting high end talent looks like.

Name another PAC 12 school that has those things?

They've been chatting for a while now; remember the recruiting coordinator? Difference is they did it smart via 3rd party so they could have plausible deniability.

I suspect Oregon is cheating with recruiting.... I mean, c'mon.... Cristobal arrives and all of a sudden they're pulling in all 4 & 5 star athletes.... even with their success in the past, they were not able to pull this off. I have very little doubt the ducks are dipping into some monetary benefit for players....would not surprise me a bit.
