This is actually, IMHO a pretty interesting event and decision. Let's talk weather:

• Coldest Inauguration since Reagan #2 (1985), which was probably not the event Monday will be. BUT, did you know the #2 coldest inauguration after Reagan's was JFK in 1961? 6 degrees. 14 degrees less than projected for Monday. Bet Jackie and the young kids had to bundle up for that since it WAS held outside
• The estimated temperature and wind in Buffalo for Sunday night's 6:30PM NFL game is within a degree of the expected inauguration 12PM weather

Now, seating will be fun. How do you squeeze the 200,000 ticket holders into the 700 seat Rotunda? Well, you don't. Prediction:

• Any High-Ranking Dem who previously felt compelled to show is already going "Thank Gawd I have an excuse"
• Republicans - Top Ranking, no change. From there, a frothy group of second stringers clawing to get in with their master, and a group hoping they can't get in
• All other Democrats. Yippie! MLK Day just got freed up!
• Many of the 200,000 left out ticket holders will still show up outside

It’s not that big a surprise. Changes, delays, and cancellations for weather happen a lot more, and a lot more easily, these days than they used to. Schools, government, etc….everyone is so afraid of anyone being uncomfortable that they’ll shut down for a heavy frost or anything below 20 degrees.

A lot of schools don’t have snow days anymore either. Instead of cancelling when it snows 3”, they just switch to online for the day and don’t have to make up for it later on.

Ours talked about that as covid was ending, but haven’t done it. They also use indoor recess a lot - if it’s cold out, or if it’s rainy the kids have recess in the gym.

I think I had indoor recess twice - the two days after Mt St. Helens erupted. By the third day, the school said “they’re playing in ash at home anyway” and threw us back outside. Never got kept indoors for weather. Didn’t matter if it was single digits or Snowing sideways, we were outside.

Now this is strictly anecdotal, but I will pass it along anyway, FWIW. Heard a comment on the radio the other day while out doing errands. It was from a well known personality that has a security detail that must provide 24 hour protection. Said his crew is the absolute best, highly trained, skilled, knowledgeable, and he asked them what they thought the odds were that an attempt would be made on Trump during the inauguration ceremony and they replied that they figured it was about 50/50! That is a pretty scary thought.
