Is WSU athletics, WSU and Pullman on DNR?

We are dangerously close .
C'mon guys. The country is full of G5, FCS, D-2, etc programs that are getting along just fine. WSU is now one of them. BSU has done just fine being an underdog G5 team in a fairly remote place.

Yeah we got F-ed by the traitorous 10. Things will never be the same again. Ever been dealt a shitty hand in your life? I've been dealt several. You get up, dust yourself off and move forward. The Pac-2, however, has made numerous missteps. "We will continue to fund Athletics at a P4 level". What a joke. "We are swinging for the fences". How myopic.

Maybe the rest of you will come to accept that the best thing the Pac-2 could have done was immediately do the reverse merger with the MW, But no, we were too cool to accept reality. So here we are - begging Sun Belt teams to join the Pac-X. Crying like babies because that mean MW is trying to enforce the agreement that we willingly signed. As the Humongous said in The Road Warrior, "what a puny plan".

Wake up, grow up, and deal with it.

WSU has the athletics department it deserves with the admin hires it has made. Hire routinely bad people? This is what you get.

and the support ... which actually is more important.
I think things will settle back up when the Pac12 reforms. Even for the most interested, it’s hard to go to Pullman in November to play Wyoming. It’s a nothing burger, no offense to Wyoming. Can’t swap USC for Hawaii and expect things as usual. Once we have consistent opponents like Fresno, Boise, SDSU, CSU etc we’ll be alright. Hopefully a scheduling agreement with some of UU/ASU/Stan/Cal/UW/Oregon going forward can be achieved too.

Also like to add here that the end of seasons have felt predictably shitty with Dickert. How many knew in your hearts we were gonna drop a game or two to WYO/Oregon St/ New Mexico to finish the season. I knew without a doubt. The new staff will energize things a bit I think.

Will WSU survive? Yes. However, our enrollment is the lowest in 15 years. When you have to issue a "puff piece" extolling that our rate of your enrollment decline is easing to 3%, you are struggling (despite offering a $1000 off tuition promotion to first years). Evergreen, WWU, CWU, UW and EWU are the beneficiaries of our enrollment decline, with increasing enrollments. Now no big time college sports. You are coming to Pullman for what exactly? Pullman campus enrollment is down to 16,400, early 1980's numbers. It may be worse than that, if a faculty member is to be believed, he/she accused Schulz of fudging to hide the extent of enrollment problem.

Pullman is in sad sad shape as a college town. It doesn't compare to 40 years ago. Hopefully, they will reopen the downtown plasma center soon. Nothing says you are a shit hole more than a downtown plasma center, other than one that shuts it's doors and remains a vacant store front for years.

We don't have much in the way of support from alums and we are deeply in debt due to the faulty belief that an overbuilt FOB/luxury boxes would yield recruiting and financial windfalls. Our athletic budget is 25% less than Oregon State, the other school whose athletic budget is deemed too small for big time athletics. Budget wise, we are 25% less than too small for the bigtime.

While Loyal is right that WSU won't go out of business, just how low will we go academically and athletically before we reach stasis, that is a scary thought. Ed is right, it is time to sound the alarm, the iceberg is approaching.

I knew he sucked. I wrote it here. Repeatedly. Ya know what else? CougEd sucks too.

Butts in seats is the path towards financial success for WSU. Cut the gpa requirement from 3.6 to 2.6 and build enrollment. Or watch the school decline in enrollment and $$$ until the layoffs hit. Pick one.

The last game I saw CWU play was for first place against Western Oregon in Ellensburg on a beautiful October Saturday.

There were more players, coaches and support staff for the teams than fans watching, including students.

WSU is now JAG. Any leverage they had being apart of a P5 conference is up in smoke, they do not matter anymore.

WSU already hit the iceberg. It will survive, but in what form?

Well aren't you the Negative Nancy there SoCal. That said, your links are sad and sobering. WSU has been F-ing it up ever since Sgt Schulz came aboard. The only bright part of your post is "While Loyal is right". Which of course we all know to be true. :)

On your "early 1980's" enrollment numbers, that does not jive with your own links. Another Business failure/Comm Grad I see.............

I know we can agree that Schulz couldn't have done worse had he being trying to run WSU into the ground. As for the Pullman campus enrollment, when I was in school (81-85), it was the only campus and its enrollment was about 16,500 per my 1983 football media guide (couldn't find enrollment figures online). How accurate that was I don't know? They also reported game attendance of 40,000 in a stadium that held 36,500. Pullman campus enrollment, according to the "Pravda" like press release below, as of 2024 was down to 16,449. That is where I got my numbers. If I'm wrong please show me that I have some reason to be optimistic. I assume the alum base that has and will support the athletics comes primarily from the Pullman campus.

BTW, the article below reported that in 2023 the Pullman campus enrollment was at 1996 levels, when our Pullman enrollment was still over 17,000, (down from an all time high of just over 21,000.) When your main campus enrollment is down near 25%, you are in a world of hurt.

What does your attitude reflect?

Seeing as I was right about how shitty a coach DickTurd was while you gobbled his nutz, maybe you should sit down and stfu? Or we can schedule gym time in Spokane. Or I can google search your clients and call them all wondering why you’re posting on a msg board while you should be working?

Stay the fck out of my way asshole.

Per Brand X, it sounds like Anne McCoy has a remedy in the works.

"Recognizing that Pullman lodging can be a squeeze on game weekends, McCoy said she and her team are exploring fun alternatives both on campus and in the community. While not wanting to tip her hand just yet, McCoy noted that Coug fans who own a tent "might want to dust it off."

“Overall enrollment across the WSU system declined by 3%, however”

Sterk was enthusiastic about building out temporary RV lots on University owned land and a couple local farmers land in sort of a Pod format. Had shuttles lined up, an RV sponsor for game day rentals, momentum was building.

V-Lane nixed it.

There's not a chance in hell I'm driving to Pullman to sleep in an f'ing tent. In my mid 20's, maybe. At retirement age, hell no.

no one was going to Pullman in November for old Pac 12 games either, with the exception of the Apple Cup

Unfortunately those 2.6 students can pursue their half ass effort at education at a half dozen other schools in state for far less money.

WSU needs to lower tuition. There is currently no value proposition for what it is.

Add a booth in the back for kidney donations to help keep the doors open

Band-Aid solutions for gangrene level problems. We have lost our biggest drawing cards, the loss of big time athletics and the perceived quality of academics (we're #2). WSU has lost the battle with big time athletics and is losing the battle against all other state funded 4 year schools for enrollment.

Biggs says make it easier to get into school, that's a start. We need bodies in the door, bottom line. Start flattering far more HS seniors with "scholarships" offers (effectively lowering tuition for now) as the next step. The main reason the decline in first year enrollment was stemmed this year is because they gave them a $1000 off tuition to enroll. How about $10,000 for 4 years. Next, stop relying on hiring bottom wrung associate profs. Its time to spend the money to lure profs of renowned to campus. If you want to be taken seriously academically, you need a faculty to match. We don't have that, and that is why kids are choosing schools closer to home. No big time sports, a run of the mill faculty and the sad state of downtown. Why come to Pullman exactly?

Finally, the university needs to collaborate with the city to turn downtown around. A small town state college needs a hopping downtown to really sell itself. They did received a 9 million federal revitalization grant, recently. The plan is to slow traffic through the downtown corridor with angled parking and traffic islands. That ain't worth a damn if motorist see a little Jackson, Mississippi out their windscreen.

And the are suggesting camping, they have to be kidding, right?

The culture of your campus life matters. If that is gone at WSU, close the doors.

A lot of that is already being offered. My daughter gets $4000 per year for four years. I think that was called the Regents Award. There was more of a selection process for that. She was in the running for free tuition for four years. My son got $4,000 for the first two years. I think that one was called the President's Award. It had a GPA threshold, IIRC, something like 3.5. A lot of the colleges offer additional scholarships.

Hopefully the city leaders have obligated those funds. Notice has gone out from the U.S. Treasury that if those funds weren't obligated by December 31, 2024 they will have to be paid back with interest and penalties.
