According to Theo, it looks like the Cougs will be starting a true freshman QB

Love Rolo's response. And to think only about a week ago some people on here were defending Theo.....

Very late to the party here...

As a journalism major...my question to the group here is Theo is supposed to hold that information at bay? Unless Rolo discussed with him and asked to hold that information, he's just doing his job, no?

Late to the party but all you missed is some silly whining.

Rolos response would seem to indicate that that was the case, no?

I feel bad for Cooper to some degree but if Rolo says he's not the guy......gotta go with what the big man wants.

The big change that I'm hoping to see from Rolovich is to see him put in the backup quarterback when the game is decided rather than waiting until the clock is under 90 seconds AND we are up (or down) by 35 points. I'm sick of our backup QB's not getting snaps because our coach is obsessed with being able to say that his QB led the nation in passing.

Unfortunately, Rolo made the initial mistake of publicly stating he had made a decision on the starting QB– something he's blamed himself for. Once that happened, you could expect reporters to hound players & others close to the program for the name, which I assume Theo has been doing. Perhaps Rolo asked Theo and others to keep things quiet if they found out but they aren't obligated to do so. However, as a result, the coach will probably be less inclined to trust the reporter. If Theo plans on being a WSU beat reporter in the future, he may find that relationship with Rolovich to be a little icy.

Glad Cougar

It will be interesting to see how Rolo treats lawson in the future. I know from living in Boise during the Petersen era that if a media guy pulled that down there he would have been completely cut off from all access to the program. Petersen had his own little fiefdom going on and the local media only reported what he wanted them to at the risk of being cast out of the loop. One local Idaho Statesman reporter dared to write a story implying the local cops "bent" the rules when it came to football players. He was banned from campus after that.

He isn't a marketing wing of the athletic program.

Oh he’s made that perfectly clear with how he handled the Woods fiasco by reporting false information that he got from the Woods family. He’s free to report what he wants and Wazzu is very limited with who covers them. Maybe Theo has a good relationship with Rolo, but it wouldn’t be surprised if Theo gets cut out of the loop with info with what has gone down the last few months. Also, doubt Theo will be there much longer. Being the beat writer for the Cougs isn’t a long-term gig, but with the market the way it is he might be stuck with Wazzu for awhile.

Personally, I think Rolo knew exactly what he was doing by mentioning it publicly. This isn't his first rodeo as a head coach, and he was also a starting D1 QB. He's very familiar with how the media operates.

I think he wanted to get things swirling internally, because, as he said, this is a year where we're going to need to utilize more than 1 QB; something he's very comfortable doing.

Naming the starter could mean naming the quarterback who plays the first quarter. Wouldn't it be interesting to play 2-3 quarterbacks in order to clarify the matter?

I think without question we'll see multiple QBs. This is the year to do that, not to mention that COVID will likely necessitate it.

It's not like WSU handled the Woods situation with grace and astuteness either. Chun/Schulz dropped the ball on that one. Could've nipped it in the bud immediately, but sat on their hands and the reporting of the matter from Lawson, whether all factual or not, is now WSU's own enemy and another recruiting story problem. Coaches now have to waste their breath on things that don't matter. That's more on WSU than Lawson, even if Lawson flamed the fire.

WSU needs the Spokesman Review (besides Blanchette - should go without saying) just as much as the Spokesman needs WSU. WSU cannot continue to be its own worst enemy, and the Spokesman needs to sell ads and digital/printed papers.

This current university/athletic department leadership has made it pretty easy for me to disengage.

What Theo just did is damned close to publishing the playbook in the newspaper. Some things in sports just shouldn’t be reported. Obviously Rolo didn’t want OSU to know.

It was a dick move by Theo. But his schtick is dick moves because nobody is ever going to confuse him as a talented writer.

Let’s see if Theo comes up with another annoying tidbit soon. There is more he can find and if he reports it I think Rolo may fire a T Shirt cannon into his face.

Yep. But isn't that sort of cancel cultural like? But yes, Rolo has every right to limit his access.

No, cancel culture would be trying to get him fired. Not helping him do his job is standard you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours.

Well said Eleven.

Back in the days of Grantland Rice and Red Smith, the ballplayers and the sports writers bought each other drinks and chased skirts together. But it never showed up in the newspaper.

Maybe if WSU tries a modern open arms approach with Blanchet, Theo and even the pretty young GU grad on KREM the coverage would be more favorable? Couldn't hurt.

I'm assuming the "pretty young GU grad" you're talking about is Brenna Greene. Not just pretty, but a most excellent sports director/reporter. That's all I have to say about that!
