JDL to start?

What Theo just did is damned close to publishing the playbook in the newspaper. Some things in sports just shouldn’t be reported. Obviously Rolo didn’t want OSU to know.

It was a dick move by Theo. But his schtick is dick moves because nobody is ever going to confuse him as a talented writer.

Just curious....OSU has zero tape on any of our QB's in a Coug uni, how is that giving him the playbook? You think OSU would not have a contingency plan if there was a more mobile QB out there?

Very late to the party here...

As a journalism major...my question to the group here is Theo is supposed to hold that information at bay? Unless Rolo discussed with him and asked to hold that information, he's just doing his job, no?

Well that is a good question, what to report and what not to report. Here is an example for you over here on the wet side there is an article in the Seattle Times this morning that Jimmy Lake hasn't announced his starting QB, but I can assure you he has picked one. And for all the Husky beat writers that hang out at practice I can assure you that at least one, if not several of the writers have figured out who the starter is, but they haven't told us, because the coach hasn't announce it and doesn't wish to announce it. It's just simply mutual respect that the writers and coach have. Maybe it's something Theo will learn some day, but being the first to break a story that someone doesn't want to be told, is not the way to develop relationships or respect. This is sports, not politics or breaking news that needs to be reported. It's simply a part of the sport.

Yeah, let's pretend it's the same preparing for the right-handed, more mobile guy as it is the left-handed, less mobile guy.

Nah. I’m not defending Theo on what he did but 99% of the tape the beavs will be watching will be of Hawaii’s QBs last year in Rolo’s offense and that’s how they will game plan. They won’t spend 10 minutes on JDLs tape as a high schooler.

I agree with your point on watching Hawaii's game film last year, but I don't agree with this. They will absolutely spend time watching JDLs high school tape to learn tendencies, arm angles, etc.

^exactly, in the grand scheme of things, who cares...? It's P12 football. If you don't think OSU was watching game film on JDL and the other two QBs, you're most likely mistaken.

Agree there should be mutual respect, but that's on Lawson and Rolo to discuss that personally.

Not at all disagreeing with what you are saying.

Only adding that Cooper supposedly has great wheels, as well. Maybe not the quickness of JDL, but he is reportedly no slouch mobility-wise, himself.

More mobile/less mobile....all a matter of degree, I suppose? I don't think it's night and day between the two. That's all I am saying.

Your point still stands, of course.

I agree with you, but for me it reiterates how, even at the local level, the media have zero reporting ethics. It's a pathetic joke that coaches are mandated to speak with the media in the first place. Leach used to frustrate me with his lack of transparency with the media, but you hear stuff like this and you can't blame him. If I were Rolo, I would go radio silent with Theo from this point forward.

And while this information doesn't, IMO, offer Oregon State a sizable strategic advantage, it does allow them to study JDL tendencies and throwing mechanics on tape; something that Rolo didn't want to leak.

All in all, it was a dick move on Theo's part. That used to be enough of a deterrent, but not anymore.

This thread is now comedy gold. People out here making Lawson to be the next Blanchette.

It's the Run N Shoot, not rocket science. Like the Air Raid, a lot of plug and play. OSU's staff has actual game experience from LITERALLY a season ago.

Ok, Theo.

Keep in mind that there's a hell of a lot more beat writers covering the mutts for Seattle media than there are in Spokane. Theo has little to no competition. He has no fear of Rolo blacklisting him and giving more access to his competition...because he has none.

Ok, Theo.

lol.

Blame him all you want (he's not my favorite either), but the pitchforks out right now on something that isn't even that big of a deal, is unreal. It's a starting QB for a team in a conference that has minimal national prestige (thanks Larry Scott - and thanks to all the university presidents and ADs who let that chump continue to "lead" the conference). Like I said, OSU LOST to the Run N Shoot last season. The game film they have on all three potential starting QBs is mostly high school film.

If y'all hate Lawson so much, call the AD yourself and tell him to limit his access, and if not, you'll pull your $.

I don't hate him.

He's just the latest in a line of dick-move writers the SR has sent to cover WSU, Grippi notwithstanding.

Don James got his panties in a bunch when Don Borst mentioned Conklin had a hand injury. I just think that the coaches and the press are on opposite ends of the rope. If you are a journalist and think of yourself as a journalist, you have to ask the hard questions.

Leach should have been asked about Apple Cups last year. It isn't pleasant, but stand and deliver.

If Rolo wants to keep things under wraps, then say nothing to KJR.

Leach had no problem saying it would be a game time decision.

Sincere question...what is a reporters responsibility? Do you think in class in the Kathy Goertzen room of the Murrow building they tell future reporters sit on what you know and lie?

Our Comm college went down the tube when Lawrence Pintek was at the helm. The one big mistake Floyd made during his tenure.

I'm not exactly seething with rage about this. It's not a huge deal. Still, Theo sucks as a general matter, not just with regard to his judgment and actions here, and it's pretty hilarious seeing all the "it doesn't matter anyway" posts when it clearly does, even if incrementally and in no manner other than just the desirability of requiring OS to face some uncertainty and potential wasted time.

Same story for UO. Cristobal has not publicly named Saturday's starter, and it is possible that he genuinely hasn't made up his mind. My guess is he knows who will start and just isn't telling reporters. Those reporters don't seem to be trying hard, like Theo, to track down a name and announce it to the world. It's either not that big of a deal to them or they are respecting his decision to keep it under wraps for strategic reasons.

First of all, having knowledge of something and not going public with it is not the same as lying about it. Secondly, I don't think there's a hard and fast rule that reporters are obligated to go public with something if the source requests the reporter to keep it quiet. Deals are made all the time and often honored by reporters in the hopes that they will maintain good relations with sources. In those cases, we usually aren't talking about critical information that will cause harm or unfairly obscure something nefarious if kept unreported. I would consider the matter concerning WSU's starting QB to be non-critical information.

Now in the case of Bob Woodward, he should have said something when he first heard it from the President.

Leave it to CougEd to conflate a lie with a college sports beat writer knowing something that the team he covers expects him to keep quiet.

I'm sure Kathy is turning in her grave....

Ed is Deep Throat. My sources are solid.

Why? So a false narrative and bullshit can be put forth as truth?

The sports guys are actually the most truthful writers at the SR.

I'm confused...you basically just called them all "dick-move writers" (sans Grippi), but they're also the most truthful? Pick one.

You should re-read what was written, Theo. There’s deep insight there.

Lmbo, after 10+ years on this board (including a few in school during the Wulff seasons), I finally get a nickname: Theo.

Can't decide if I should be offended or send you a bouquet of flowers.

Who is Don James?
