Just today 16 players in portal for Colorado

This is a perfect scenario for a guy like Paul Wulff. If he manages his roster right he will be in a position to catch some very good players.
Yes, lower level programs have a new source of supply. That will ultimately mean some combination of fewer high school scholies and fewer kids who manage to retain a scholie for all 4-5 years.

Systemic discrimination, while it is still somewhat problematic, is much better than systemic racism. Systemic racism is not an accurate phrase, so why use it?

To me, there are just a few words that are about the worst things possible to call someone. Racist. Traitor. Child molester. Maybe there are a few others in the same class, but those things are horrible to call someone, and unfortunately racist is the one that gets thrown around most often, quite casually and without proof in most cases. So you tell me-are you affected if someone starts calling YOU a racist or child molester? Do you think people may start to treat you differently, to think less of you?
Well...you are the one who appeared bothered (is that the correct adjective?) by the ghost of BLM and being called racists that you would post something about "racism or discrimination when it was kind of out of context. Even that being said, you clearly like to make things equal, is that fair to say. That what is good for the goose is good for the gander. You don't like the term racist, and I get that. But for me to suspect the killers of Aubrey (can't remember his last name) from Georgia killed because of the color of his skin isn't over the top. Thinking the police didn't question the people who hunted him down, and if roles were reversed I have very little doubt they would have been held in custody instead of living free for another 40 days. Was that racially motivated? Is it a far reach to think they are racists?

But here is the irony....you make mention of the inequity (is that correct) that prime time can run 30 players that are black and not be questioned, but if a white coach did the same he would be questioned whether it was racially motivated- is that correct? You see that is an unfairness to the system. That even if say CougEd was a coach and a parent called him racist, you would be bothered by it although it doesn't affect you. If it wasn't true it wouldn't affect me either. It didn't bother Leach.

But again, you find that unfair at best. And a horrible term unless you can prove it. You know what I find extremely ironic? That is one complaint. Meanwhile, college football and pro football over the last 30 years has been dominated by black players, maybe to the tune of 65% black to 35% white.

You would think head coaching and assistant coaching would come close to mirroring that? The Pac 12 has been probably the most active in hiring black head coaches. There is one currently. One. How many in the Big 10? The Big 12? The NFL? Is it systemic racism/discrimination? Personally, I don't see many schools or coaches who say...I can't hire CougEd because he is black. I think coaches typically hire who they feel comfortable with. And they do so because their window is so small. (I think the NFL is a slightly bigger problem) But the problem is systemic that precludes the majority of the players who have participated to become the leaders of a new generation.

We can call it whatever we want and whatever makes us feel better. But the numbers do not lie.

So would I rather be in a place someone misguided may think I am a racist because I am a head football coach, vs the side where I don't seem to have the same opportunities to be a head football coach.

Chris rock tackled this exact same issue. He said he lives in the most exclusive area in New Jersey and only three people live there. Eddie Murphy, Beyonce, and Chris rock. Three of the best in their industry. Meanwhile, the next door neighbor is a dentist. Not a dentist who is historic. Not the best dentist ever. Just a dentist.

Do things need to be uncapped? Guys can leave but does the NCAA (and other schools without huge NIL budgets) have an obligation to provide training for an unrestricted number of players that just don't feel like being someplace anymore because they can get a little more cash someplace else? Should schools like Colorado have the right to dump an unlimited number of kids who picked them because they've got some hot new players that they are excited about?

College football has always been a bit sketchy at times, but there used to be at least a modicum of honor expected as a veneer over the top of the charade.

Reinstating recruitment caps would be one of the most effective ways to keep schools from abusing the system. The 25 player limit was instituted for a reason and it's ridiculous that we are throwing out decades of experience that tried to foster a competitive environment in the name of short term greed.

The problem with reinstating the cap, is that say WSU loses 43 players to portal, NIL, at end of season. And say about 23 of those 43 players are GOOD RETURNING STARTERS.

If reinstate the Cap, WSU recruits either about 13 transfers, JC, portal, and 12 HS recruits, or even if 25 GOOD transfers, JC, Portal, then WSU still can't replace the 43 players, 23 what would have been good returning starters, and so because of that, the season after the 9 win season, only wins 1,2 wins because of that.

But if you have no caps, WSU can then recruit, replace the 43 players, 23 what would have been returning starters that lost to transfer portal, NIL, to other colleges, with 43 recruits comprised of transfers, JC, NIL, HS, etc, to replace the 43 lost, and then win 6,7,8 games, instead of 1,2 wins, following the 9 win season.

If caps are reinstated, The transfer Portal + NIL will still take 37+ players from WSU, and WSU will only be able to take a cap of 25, and will only get about 15 to 20 replacements, AND WILL BE EXTREMELY SCREWED, BECAUSE WSU WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO REPLACE WHAT THE TRANSFER PORTAL + NIL would take from WSU if the caps were reinstated.

I hold out hope that talented kids will come to WSU because we are special. It's a Coug thing. An anthill of students, as Mike Leach quipped. Maybe this Cougar Collective can provide enough cash to make the athletes happy. Or the F-ing NCAA will put a lid on the G-damn thing. I'm fine with ballplayers getting some sort of stipend up and above their full-ride scholarships (that give them an education that will benefit them for life). But this NIL thing has quickly gotten out of hand. I mean how about a $1,000/month stipend limit? They already have everything else paid for.

It's just sad, and nuts.

How about putting a cap on coaches salaries too? Or the ADs salary? Why does one side get all the $$$ and the other gets lint in their pockets?

Imo, the problem isn’t the payday, it’s the lack of rules around it.

No tampering rules.
No salary cap.
No roster limit.
Best teams pick first.
No multi year deals.

What makes the NFL competitive and creates competition is nowhere to be found in college athletics.

For a lot of teams football is now a 1, maybe 2 year process. There is no more development. Kids aren’t gonna sit 3-4 years any more. Not at Alabama, not at WSU. You are coaching for 1 season at a time. Everything in the program has to be about the upcoming season. Coaches change, players change.

This is not about building up to a great junior or senior year any more. This is about building up to a contract year. Either leave for NFL or leave for NIL. You get kids for 1 great season, maybe 2 and they are off to make $$$ somewhere else.

It’s on the staff to coach up new kids. For the middle school PE teachers becoming millionaires in 1-3-5 years, sorry man, I don’t feel bad for them at all. Ya know what McGuire does? He reads my posts saying he’s a horse shit OL coach, then he looks at his bank account and feels good about it. He doesn’t give a flying fck what I or anyone else has to say. Same for Dickert. Takes down $2,000,000, creates generational wealth, he doesn’t care.

There is a better solution. Portal opens October 1, closes Nov 5th. You want a free transfer you go to the portal early.

Nov 6 to signing day need to sit a year. Same with after the spring session. Unless the school grants you waiver and wants you gone.

Why would you limit the kids? It’s their career. It’s their education. And you’re gonna dictate to them when and where? While everyone around them gets filthy f’ing rich??? Nope.

A reasonable window is fair. An unreasonable window while everyone get rich around you is unfair.

For the millions these staffs are making, it’s time to put on thinking caps and find a way.

The portal and NIL changed the game. These kids wanted to be treated like professional athletes, now they have a chance. Colorado is cutting it's mistakes. I have no issue with this.

If you want to tank a school like WSU, cap the number of scholarships per year. The cap won't prevent high end talents from entering the portal as most schools view Francisco Mauigoa as worthy of a scholarship. But it will prevent us from being able to replace these departures with a talent with comparable experience.

Whatever the results we get in 2023, the team will be helped by the additions of the 7+ we've added from the portal.

The highlighted comment reveals the hypocrisy and bullsh!t of the NIL and portal. Actual professional athletes don't get to leave on a whim because they can make more money somewhere else. They have contracts and obligations that make them stay. Teams have protections to guarantee that when they've invested money in an athlete, they have a right to recoup some of that investment. Even though the pro systems are flawed, there are salary caps and rules in place to keep the environment and least somewhat competitive.

The current system is an unmitigated disaster and even the top schools who benefit from it know that it is.

Prime doesn’t want to develop players when he tells you time to go. This may backfire on him.

As I said, the dude is everything wrong with college football. My hope is that his prima donnas get caught on tape yelling at each other on the sideline and the whole fuggin' thing melts down. USC went 4-8 in 2021 despite all the talent on their roster because they were a bad TEAM. Hoping to see Prime struggle through a 3-9 season this year and see dozens of his new players bail on him once they realize it's not about them...it's about "PRIMETIME!".

He is the most selfish coach I have ever seen. Name another coach that walks into the locker room before the game and says “play my music!” Unreal. He is an attention whore that has used his celebrity to find work. CU is paying how much for this? $6,000,000? Wow.

I don’t disagree regarding your views of Deion but doesn’t mean he can’t win. If he keeps replacing 2 star talent with 4/5 star talent and has the right coaches in place he will win. Not like we haven’t seen other douchey weirdo coaches be wildly successful. Brian Kelly, Dabo, Harbaugh to name a few. Deion is in a diff category though.

I dont know enough about CU’s past classes to say if they were 2 star loaded or 3 star loaded. Certainly could be an upgrade in talent. Could be just trading 3 stars for 3 stars that were on the field and not depth. Also, he isn’t getting 4-5 star talent so deep that it will flip overnight.

He has created an expansion team with the massive volume of turnover.

Maybe i misread but I thought he flipped some kids from tOSU, Notre Dame and such. He ain’t doing anything next year or probably the year after but if he can put together a couple of top 20 classes + blue chip transfers they could be competing in the conference by ‘25

The NFL is has the whole league on one year deals. If a player doesn't live up to expectations they are gone. Talk about hypocritical bullshit. Are we trying to come up with a system rigged to help the owners put more money in their pockets or are we trying to have a system that works for everyone.

If I had my way, NIL wouldn't be a thing. But if it is a thing, I want a system that best works for everyone. Schools are losing a ton of revenue to NIL so the facilities/support staff are going to take a major hit over time. Players are making a lot more money but will get thrown overboard at a moments notice.

He has 4 HS kids that are 4-5 star types. The rest are 3 star kids and one 2 star kid.

His transfer class is rated high because he has so many coming. A couple highly rated kids? Sure. That is the exception, not the rule.

He is not landing the volume of 4-5 star kids the press clippings would lead you to believe.

Can his kid play QB at the big boy level? I’ve never watched him play but he’s got a lot riding on him.

Two other closely related things:

4-5 star recruits have been BMOC, probably since 8th grade. On a team loaded with BMOCs...none of them are BMOC. A lot of them won't like it.

And...mercenaries usually aren't team players.

If talent was all it took, USC & UCLA would have won the conference for the last 30 years. If mercenaries were winners, the Yankees would win every year. Talent only goes so far, they have to be able to play with the other kids. Not sure Deion ever really learned that.

Well, he doesnt have many 4-5 star kids. He likely wont either. When it comes to 4-5 star kids and NIL $, how deep are CU pockets? In a bidding war with oil $ in Texas and Oklahoma or SEC fan crazed collectives, who wins? He isn’t beating Oregon or SC. So coming to the West Coast for top end kids won’t work. He is gonna sell whatever he can to get kids to turn down more and go to CU.

Imagine this…. your team is losing, your coach said you wouldn’t…. now you aren’t playing and the HC is a hard ass old school coach…. doesn’t sound like much fun to me. Especially if I turned down more $$$ to go there. I’ll pass.

He has stripped it down to an expansion team. Who knows how his roster breaks down by class yet. Is it top heavy? Is it 1 and done for the portal kids and 1 and done for the HS kids?

Wtf does his day look like? He isn’t teaching anyone football. He has no clue how to run a Power 5 program as a CEO. Watching film of what? Making recruiting calls? Wearing his girlfriend’s coat and Bozworth shades around campus? Media requests?

He is no f’ing football coach. He is the slap chop Billy Mays of football.

Play my theme music!

Please . Don’t like it they can play in the minor league . The portal windows i presented are more than fair .

The golden rule .

Gives the school some protection while allowing kids to move freely .

Deviating from the point….can anyone explain to me why the Seahawks draft a #3 wide receiver in the first round when they can’t stop the run?

Im assuming he is the best WR in the draft. Maybe they think he has more value for the money at that pick than the best DT available?

I think he is, and I think he should have gone 5-6 picks earlier. But come on….they couldn’t find any DL or LB? Nolan Smith and Myles Murphy are both still there.
I would have been more OK with them taking Will Levis.

Agree on Will. They need guys that can play right now. And when I say right now, I mean right mutha f’ing now. Those 2 show up and if not start, contribute heavily.

Do they have two second round picks? There has to be a wide body DT and maybe the huge OL available.

They have picks 6 and 21 in round 2 (37 & 52 overall). It’s not a great year on the lines, but there are a couple guys that could fall. And surprisingly, Levis and Smith are still available at pick 30.

Edit: Nevermind…Eagles just took Smith. Nice pick for them at 31.

The Eagles front is unblockable.

There are some good players still available. They need a DT. There should be a good one available with the 6.

Levis is good value for sure. Does that outweigh need right now tho?

Depends what you think of Levis and his ceiling at this point. If I’m Schneider/Carroll, tonight I’m still looking at DL. There’s probably only one DT I’m looking at at #37, there might be a couple DEs or an OLB. But there’s 5 teams ahead of me who are all looking at those spots too.
I might be willing to look at G also. I have needs there, whoever my QB is. But there’s a better chance I can address that later in the draft.
Levis won’t fall much further. If he’s still there when Seattle is up again, they have to think about it. Geno is not a long-term solution, and Lock isn’t a better answer. But, I’m not confident Levis is either. I don’t see him as a guy who’s going to lift his team. He’s probably serviceable…but I want a player at #37. If you believe his ceiling is higher, though…take him. But, I think either Detroit or the Rams will take him. Goff and Stafford are on the back nine, it’s time to bring in the next guy. And, as a second rounder, there’s little pressure to put him on the field on day 1.

Agree. Another pass rusher at DT would be nice. But a wide body that eats blocks to keep Bobby clean is crucial. That may be the way to go. Solve the inside run and get more out of Bobby.

There are some nice guards and centers still there.

Also, there may be a big time TE available too. If the kid from ND is still there I can see them taking him. He could be a 15 yr player.

I’d prob pass on a qb in round 2. They just need too much help at other positions right now.

I don't follow the Seahawks that closely. Tell me...do they lack a complete front 7, or is it more of a depth issue, where if a DT is hurt they end up having to play a DE in his place (which is where my Chargers found themselves last season)?

It's a lack of performance, lack of talent issue, etc. Seahawks technically have the depth, so that probably technically probably wouldn't have to play a DE, if DT is hurt, but their DT's aren't handling the run, and aren't getting pressure an or sacks vs QB's, because of lack of performance because either both starting DT's aren't good enough or 1 DT is not good enough and so the other DT gets double teamed more, etc.

Do you have anything cogent to add to the conversation?
Cogent: it’s how an aging white conservative obsessing over and rehashing rightwing echo-chamber grievances on racism, vaccine mandates, transgendered, woke-ism or whatever else they’re distracting you with… makes Joe Biden’s most incoherent ramblings sound relatively.

They are old and hurt at LB. They are awful at DL. They signed a pass rushing DT from Denver but he is the 6’3” 280 variety. They need a bruiser inside. And a pass rusher off the edge.

The corner they took at #5, combined with their All Pro other corner prob gets them another beat to rush the passer so that could make guys look a lil better. But still…

Wouldn’t be surprised if they took 2 more best available guys in the second round. There are still a lot of #1 and #2 ranked guys by position left.

The date doesn’t matter that much. Kids will just leave the team.
Matters a great deal. That way the school as a little roster certainty. They know who is potentially available to play the remaining three games, and the bowl game. Plus it will make NIL less of an issue. Kids will have to bet they will get more cash some where else.

When Jimbo Fisher bitches about NIL after they spent 25 on a class....you know something is wrong.

If I had NIL money, I would give all 85 kids NIL money of 1500. Then have two or three players making bigger money. The whole idea was image and likeness. Sorry, John Mateer coming in a a freshman doesn't have a likeness. Nor do any freshman.

So give coin to all the scholie kids, that had been the complaint for years...they didn't have enough spending money.
