Leach would have...

Leach would have adapted is my feeling. He didn't like losing and he would have put a ton of pressure on WSU Athletics to get active in this space.
Yeah, I don't know about him retiring. He always got big, big numbers out of hidden gem QBs thanks to the system...no reason to believe he wouldn't have continued to do so (there's always a few transfer guys out there like Minshew who just want to learn and play with a legend). Plus, I think we would have enjoyed having another legit reason to bag on the NCAA while still winning.

Agreed. He'd have actually called out program by name who tampered....just for the sport of it. If the NIL deal WSU gave Mateer (as example), I suspect he would have said "we have a bunch of guys on campus that can throw a more accurate deep ball."

...retired from coaching by now because of NIL had he not died already.

No way he would have put up with this madness. Same as Tony Bennett.

Discuss.
I believe Leach wouldn't have minded this as much as some would expect. He would not be a fan of players getting paid, most likely, especially if it meant some players feeling like making some money gave them more power vis-a-vis him (as opposed to the prior power dynamic, which I believe he enjoyed), and frankly, any outside source of NIL funds would need to be mindful of that if they actually gave a damn about the endorsement. Leach wouldn't care if his QB had a million-dollar NIL deal - he'd still bench him or kick him off the team. He might even do it just to make a point.

He was used to having to find underscouted talent and to keep quiet about it until signing day, as well as the prospect of better-situated schools coming in to poach his recruits. He probably would have liked the change, to the extent it occurred, to players making decisions based on something rational like NIL $ as opposed to how many times you texted them that day, or whether you had sent them 100 signed letters from the coaches saying how much they loved the recruit. I'm sure Leach hated that shit.

He would have really been pissed about the tampering that would result from unfettered transfers and NIL $, though. At a place like Mississippi State, he wouldn't be as affected as he would have at WSU by all of this, but he still would have hated that. He'd likely be out there naming names and burning bridges.
