Liam Ryan on the depth chart

Daughter who is friends with a lot of players believes Mac's absence is discipline related.

Indeed. Social media wasn't as big when I was in school, but I was definitely more connected and felt cutting edge 🤣
The closest thing we had two social media when I was in school we’re the letters to the editor in the Evergreen. The big “Spandex Debate” in the 80s could rival any pissing match on this forum. It started when some guy wrote in stating that spandex was a privilege, not a right. Shit got crazy fast.

BUT, does it rival Brink v Swogger?? 🤣I wonder if we can dig these up within the digital DE archives...I'd love to read those. Spandex...mannnn.

Twitter was still relatively new when I started college (Facebook "likes" was the hot CTA) and a tool not many people were using. I think back in the day they actually noted what user number you were and I think I was within the first 20M. I tried to convince so many people that it was going to become something. Now I don't have it.

Wow. I took that as a challenge and found it pretty quickly. March of ‘88. So many hits on Spandex that year.

Here is a link to the original letter. Page 4 of 3/3/88 edition in case the link doesn’t work properly.

“Picky guys upset with overabuse of Spandex”

The guy starts getting drilled the next day here. And it goes on from there if I remember correctly.

Another example of college men being dumb shits. While I cringe reading this now, I’m sure back then I was laughing my ass off through the whole damn thing. As I’ve mentioned in the past, I wasn’t exactly mature as a student.

Totally uncalled for.

He’s (like me) a traditionist I’m assuming. I like college football for the tradition, history, comraderie, pageantry and all the other aspects of team sports a lot of us remember fondly. Transfer portal, NIL, opt out is really going to change a really cool sport and not for the better in my opinion. Coaches get paid way to much as well by the way.
Another triggered snowflake. Stop being offended so easily.

96 can't respond without going to the name-calling angle. It's quite amazing how consistent he is.

From this thread alone:

Triggered much, little bitch? (to SD Coug)

Allow me to help: SD Coug is crying like a little bitch because players who do not get paid are choosing to look out for themselves instead of playing for free in a meaningless game. (To Sponge)

Another triggered snowflake. Stop being offended so easily. (To NWC).

Challenge for the new year, 96 - try to go a week without the name calling and instead use logic, reason and data to support your position.

Well..I asked him what he was going to be offended by today. I didn't expect to find my answer so quickly.. although I should have

Agreed, but FFS call everyone out if you don’t like the name calling or get off your high horse. You only find it unacceptable to act juvenile if it’s someone that holds differing views than you. You single out 96 then throw likes down on others who do the same shit.

I don’t recall the Evergreen debate, but late in high school our ASB passed a resolution putting weight limits on spandex. Our advisor had wandered off, so we passed several mischievous resolutions. Another one said that the advisor’s head should be held underwater for the duration of our meetings.

Of course, if our kids did the same things today, they’d probably be expelled.

I think we all know that they get payment for their services. They didn't choose WSU out of the goodness of their heart. They felt like this school offered them the best opportunity to extend their football careers while having no college debt. This agreement was for the year and the year isn't complete. What I don't understand is what was their goal at the beginning of the year? Just to use this year as a stepping stone to get into the NFL or did they agree with any of the team goals, which i am guessing was more along the lines of win as many games as possible to get to the Rose Bowl or best bowl they could get to and not national championship. Either way they are gone and doing what seems to be the new trend. Not good for the sport, but hey if coaches get too leave...
While I am not in favor of the trend. I couldn’t imagine one of these young men getting hurt and ruining the chance they may have had of getting drafted. Simply on that fact alone I understand and wish them luck.

they take that risk every time they lace up their cleats., it doesn't increase during the post season.

In the past, haven’t some players gotten insurance policies just in case they got injured and fell in the draft? That way they get paid anyway…why not keep doing that?

Agreed. I could be wrong, but I believe it has a lot to do with the draft process now as well. It’s not as much the insurance as the not being able to prepare. That one time insurance grab is small pittance compared to an NFL contract and the weight given to having an actual asset used on you…I too feel disappointed because it feels like it should be the crowning achievement of the season, but not even the coaches stick around for it .. I am trying to remember but, I think it was somewhere in the neighborhood of a full months head start on the competition in terms of preparing.. Most of them left school directly after the last game to go train. That extra month could be the difference between the 3rd round and undrafted for some..

Sure, but think about a guy like Liam. Again what’s he gonna do cut his 40 from 5.5 to 5.4? He’s a marginal O-Lineman that isn’t going to have super impressive measurables either way. His best way to catch someone’s eye is to go out on national TV and pancake the crap out of guys for 60 minutes. Now sounds like he was hurt anyways from what we are hearing now but using him as an example since he is the topic.

A guy like Watson I get a bit more from the draft process standpoint. He’s pretty athletically gifted so the extra month of training may really benefit him if he can put up some gaudy combine numbers.

I was going to post the very same thing. Why not skip a team's conference championship or final regular season game if you are worried about getting hurt before the draft? At least for many of these players, I would think a solid performance against another bowl team would go a long way in showcasing a player's potential worth in the NFL. I know we are just fans, but this year's opt outs have really tainted the traditional value of bowl games. (And I agree with many others– there are too many bowl games.)

Glad Cougar

What really blew me away about your link was the letter to the editor about "date rape" on the same page. It's amazing to remember that it used to be common to say that a woman couldn't be raped if she was too drunk to remember if she had given consent or not.

Amber Dewey certainly had a dated vision of date rape and unlike the current environment, everyone knew who made the comment instead of it being an anonymous idiot.

Siri…show me a post in which I would rather be reading another Covid debate

True enough. Just offering some additional info/ perspective. You’d be surprised though what a month of professional 2 a days, professional meal prep, lifting, and footwork could do.. I’ve seen lineman change their bodies entirely…

Agree totally Glad, but let’s be realistic. Bowl games are no more then a money grab anymore. If your not going to a New Years bowl there’s a lot of pomp and circumstance for nothing. Few of the traditional bowls remain and even fewer are those that highlight traditional conference match-ups. The only way to salvage this system is to include it in a larger playoff picture or dare I say give the players a part of that pot generated by the bowl😬.. Enough of the Xbox’s… The only thing that matters for the bowl and university is the money the game brings in, why should it be different for the players. Especially those graduating. I do however extremely dislike the message it sends to your teammates and the fans that support you… But, I think the onus should be on a system change

For some of these guys that are sitting out it’s the last football game they will ever have a chance to play. If I could throw pads on and go play another game tomorrow I would. That’s whats particularly odd about some of these kids sitting

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. That was a classic. I recall angry women in spandex showing up to protest outside some of the “picky guys” apartments.
