Looks like Mateer hits the portal

I know it's different now vs. where it used to be for players staying around, but I'm still giving something of a F'off Mateer if he leaves.

Don't get me wrong, I am more of a F'off Ward as he did less and had a lot more retarded decisions, but seriously...

We give guys a chance to be awesome and they owe it back.

If they got a Wazzu Tattoo and fronted it to help WSU get additional players I'd be more forgiving.

They will leave and probably never flash Crimson and Gray again.

Thank you again for beating fuw Mateer and getting 8 wins with a side order of early season noise.

Aside from that... you aren’t true Wazzu if you leave.

You're a true money bitch.

there is no indication that msn has any actual knowledge of mateer leaving. stop being a dipshit and believing everything you read on the internet.

Duly noted that you woulda turned down 7 figures at 20 years old. You’re a better man than me.

Turning down? Gtfoh.

If Wazzu offers ZERO, that's on us.

But you know we aren't zero and after taxes he will still need to do something with his life.

And again... we let him/them play and helped make their lives happen.

If they have no candor to truly do something with a real thank you... that's basically a middle finger to us.

"Old" days:

  • OU is a blue blood with a legitimate natty shot over his time with them.
  • Much better lineman and accompanying talent overall.
  • OU has tons of money for facilities, trainers, coaches, etc.
  • He's from North Texas and likely grew up with Oklahoma as a dream (or, at least, respected) school, watching them finish in the top 10 regularly with guys winning Heismans and getting drafted 1:1.
  • Much better shot at a Heisman.
  • They play in front of 83,000 maniacs every weekend. Let's just say it's a bit different on the Palouse.
  • They get tons of exposure and promotion compared to WSU.
  • Perhaps most importantly, they just hired your OC, the only one you've ever known. The alternative at WSU is unclear.

Current day:

*All of that* plus:

  • Probably something like a $600k-$750k disparity in NIL money. Per year. If not more. Even if he doesn't make it in the NFL, as is likely, he can get a truly life-changing nest egg with a couple years of that. That's pretty much the "downside."
  • What I could write pages on but we'll just refer to here as "realignment." WSU has little money, significant remaining uncertainty, and largely shitty opponents and exposure (relatively speaking). Yeah, as WSU fans we can take umbrage at some of this, but when you take a step back, it's no different from what we would have said about some transfer QB we offered from a mediocre Sun Belt team back in the day, or what we probably will say now about wherever our transfer QB comes from.
Even absent the primary stuff you guys are arguing about here regarding how much more money he can get, almost anyone would make that move due to factors in that former list, especially when accounting for transfers being largely unfettered now. Add on the current-day issues and, honestly, I would tell my own kid to make the move, even as a WSU alumnus.

It sucks for WSU and I appreciate the efforts of those working to keep him around. It is very hard to turn down all that for some kind of principled stand, especially when the NFL payday isn't anything close to a certainty.

I wouldn’t be surprised, but I’m also not going to worry too much about one unsourced report on the internet from a writer I’ve never heard of.

The Jackson Arnold transfer is meaningless, it was anticipated before because he didn’t play well and was benched. He was expected to portal already. And then OU signed a QB away from Ok State today, that was probably the final nail. Nothing to do with Mateer.

If Mateer does leave - and like I posted earlier I can’t blame him - the little bit we saw of Jaxon Potter seemed positive. The schedule won’t be as friendly next year, but the cupboard isn’t completely empty. At least not on offense.

Maybe we should start running the triple option.

Nobody is going to want to poach a triple option QB...and we get stability and the QB spot while giving teams fits who have 1 week to prepare for it(unless they play Air Force)

And we all saw what they did to us.
Why not? This is the new reality, any players we get thar are good will leave, no matter how much we offer

"Hitting the portal" is simply a formal way of declaring that a player is open for business. Mateer can still return to WSU if we come up with a competitive offer. It's unlikely that we can win a bidding war, but entering the portal isn't like declaring for the NFL draft and hiring an agent.

Agree. I figured that he would probably enter just to test the waters. WSU needs to make its best offer and hope it is enough. Oklahoma does loom large - him being from N. Texas is almost as compelling as the money. Well maybe not almost.....

I know what you guys are saying, but it's still like telling your girlfriend you're sticking with her if you can't find nicer T & A when you go out this weekend.

Maybe if we had a defense we would have been sexier to him

What did Coach Eric Taylor run?
At Dillon or East Dillon? If I recall he switched from the run n shoot to the single wing. He also had a more athletic QB at East Dillon. Coach Taylor fit his offense around his personnel!

@425, don't know if you saw it or not, but there was an interesting thread on Brand X where several posters said the collective is making a big fundraising push to keep John Mateer and they feel like he really would prefer to remain at WSU

Single wing would be better. Or the Fly that Willamette ran for a long time. Power T is tough too.

Wonder how those types of offensive schemes would play with a fan base conditioned to watching a pass-happy attack?

As long as the Cougs kept winning 8,9, 10 games a year, attendance would probably still be good

You said "still." When has attendance ever been good?

Going to be a long weekend waiting for Dec. 9. I guess the next big question, if Mateer does declare for the portal, is will he play in the bowl game? If he (or others) opts out, then the die is cast. From I read in the rules (link below), a player doesn't have to commit to a new school by Dec. 28, but has to enroll in the new school for Spring semester in order to participate in Spring drills (duh). So Mateer could declare, also declare that he will play in the bowl (main reasons would be loyalty and a chance to showcase himself once more after the Wyoming debacle). So we wait and see.

I assume that everyone thinks he is long gone, and probably to Oklahoma. I don't disagree but will hold out hope until it is a done deal. OK WSU coeds, time to step up.........

P.S. And if he chooses to play in our bowl game, then leaves, I won't be pissed off at him. If he bails on the team, my perspective will be different.

If he’s in the portal I wouldn’t want him playing in the bowl game. If someone’s one foot out the door let’s get the next man up and get him some experience.

In the portal does not mean he leaves. Have you ever had a good job, but saw a potentially better opportunity and applied for it? And maybe even got an offer and decided to stay put? I have. I don't blame him for testing the waters. He is a class guy who has played his ass off all year after waiting 2 years for his turn.

Related, I would presume that Eckhaus will enter the portal as well, and staying or going will depend upon what Mateer does. So who then will be our bowl game QB?

If he’s out, he’s out.

I cannot believe this is even a debate.

No kidding. I would think we would have learned about letting lame ducks go to bowls after Price in the 2003 Rose.
That's a little bit different scenario. I'll ask you the same question I asked 90:

"Have you ever had a good job, but saw a potentially better opportunity and applied for it? And maybe even got an offer and decided to stay put? I have. I don't blame him for testing the waters. He is a class guy who has played his ass off all year after waiting 2 years for his turn."

And to go further - if you apply for another, potentially better job, should your employer fire you for even looking? I've had that happen as well.

So, Mateer has not entered the portal yet, and if he does he is not guaranteed to leave. So you guys attack him all you want. I have a bit of a different perspective, and will let it play out..

If he’s out, he’s out.

I cannot believe this is even a debate.
As I bitched earlier...

I will consider Mateer a Coug if he shouts "I'm always a Coug" left and right when at the next school and repeatedly during his interviews.

If he's telling great players to come play for us.

However... the statement made by lack there of is... "If you're good and want to make the most money possible... F*ck Wazzu"

Almost as bad as becoming a fusky

Something that has bugged me all season is the John Mateer branded headband he's been wearing all season. It just makes me wonder if his focus where it should be to create success on the field.

I know the game has changed and everyone expects to be the next Livvy Dunne (Google her if you're living under a rock, you can thank me later), but she is by far the exception to the rule.

Never heard of her. There is this honey named Olivia Dunne - maybe they are cousins? :)

I'd chip in to keep her on campus.

Same gal. Honey of the NL rookie of the year from pittsburg...Paul Skenes. She's not olympic caliber so she can get the hell outta here. That's all I have to say about that.

If Mateer and and Parker and 1 WR leave, then still have Zevi Eckhaus as a 5th,6th year senior, that took his redshirt year this season, because didn't burn that redshirt, because didn't play in any games.

And Zevi with 1 more year under his belt from when he transfered to WSU, will know the offense that much better, and will thus probably be better, and may be better, may become better then Mateer.

Also WSU can bring in a transfer portal QB to compete with Zevi for QB1.

As for replacing Parker, WSU will still have Schlenbaker and Leo Pulasi, both pretty good, and can bring in a transfer portal RB.

As for replacing a WR, if a WR leaves, WSU has a very extremely good WR Corp to replace Kyle Williams, with Hutson, Freeman, Carlos Hernandez, 1 transfer portal JR, who will be a senior, forget his name, can bring in 1 WR transfer from portal.

On Defense:

Only losing Thornton, and Budda, Keith Brown, will replace Thornton, and will be better then Thornton as Linebackers.

DL will have Raam Stevenson, David Gusta, Dinner Buh, as SENIORS.

CB's will have Smith, Jamorri Colson, Stephen Hall, as Seniors, 1 Junior, and Ethan Connor, as a sophmore.

Safety is the only question mark as if Durant will improve. And can get a transfer portal Safety to help Durant.

Gushiken is a awesome hybrid Nickel, Safety, Linebacker, and is a key in making 425 work.

Dickert is probably not leaving this off-season, and probably will stay at least 1,2,3 more seasons.

And he is on a improvement trajectory: his first year as interim coach, then 5-7, 8-4, then probably 9-3 or 10-2 or 11-1.

As long as most to almost all players stay, and as long as Dickert gets about 2,3,4,5 key transfer portal replacements, the team will probably be even better then Mateer's team, or at least as good as Mateer's team, or at worst, almost as good as Mateer's team, and will probably finish 7-5,8-4 at worst, 9-3,10-2 at average, 11-1 at high, 12-0 at best.

The cupboard is not empty. The Sky is not falling.
