MBK: Cal Preview - Story + Presser Video

For some reason, I thought that the game started at 7:30, so I missed the first part of the game. I have been watching the last few minutes and the Cougars are looking good.

Cougars up at the half 31-28. Game is being played at the Cougs pace. To end the half, the Cougars went on a 7-0 run, followed by a 7-0 run by Cal to tie the game. Then, Kunc hit a three and that is the lead the Cougars have at half time.

Abogidi with back to back threes to open the second half

Cougs up by 13 with a little over 13 minutes left. They are playing great defense and the offense is currently shooting over 50%.

Cougars have several lay ins with Markovetskyy setting great screens.

Cougars up by 9 with around 3:30 left. Bonton going to the line, as he was fouled driving to the hoop.

Jakamovski makes a smart play diving to the ground for a loose ball and then calls a time out before he gets tied up.

Cougars win 71-60. They did well at the line 75% or 18-24. Bonton with 21 points and 6 assists.

Yup, nice win. They need to work on managing the end of the game. The last sequence was ugly up 11 and trying to score for some reason.

Bonton has had 2 consecutive quality games. If that continues we can beat anyone in the conference.

It really was nice to see the team hit their free throws. If they had done that, they would have easily beat Arizona. As you wrote above, Stanford is going to be a tough game. Looking forward to watching that game. Da Silva, Davis and Williams are going to be fun to see.

Anyone else see Bonton try and go after that Cal player after the game?
Why is he doing this crap
Smith needs to reign him in IMO.

We have no clue what said or done or who started it but the Cal player was clearly talking to him as well. The coaches were quick to respond when it happened.

Good for Bonton is what I say. Cal has tried to (successfully I might say) intimidate us for several years. They did it twice in losses for us last year.

Coaches as Brent said handled it just right.

Did anyone notice the lack of "play by Play" announcing from Ted Robinson, (and his color man)?
During the entire broadcast, I repeat....during the entire game, they would talk about this and that, talking basketball generalities, but absolutely no play by play. When a player made a shot, he would then call his name.

Perhaps we've been spoiled by Greg Heister? The Spokane native, (Gonzaga play by play guy), who literally called every single Beasley Home Game we had this year. I really like Greg's style and delivery. He knows his stuff, knows the COUGS well, and adds a local spin.

However, last night, I was shocked with Ted Robinson. We are all too familiar with his football stye, but last nights game reminded me when a team is up by 30 points, and it's a blowout... they start talking about coaches, rebuilding, anything except what's happening on the field or the court.

This performance really surprised me. Perhaps Ted Robinson does not like to call basketball? Perhaps he didn't prep enough and study the roster? Anyways....I just thought last nights play by play announcing was a huge disgrace.

Did anyone else notice this?

I thought Don MacLean was very complimentary of the Cougs, admitted he hadn't seen them much but was impressed. If this team takes care of the ball they can play with anyone, 11 turnovers in the first half kept Cal in the game, only 4 in the 2nd half, that's one of reasons the Cougs pulled away. A lot of things to fix and room for improvement, if they keep improving they can make the tournament. Ted and Don rambled a bit, but I don't really care, I can watch the game, that's what TV is for. If that was a radio broadcast, I wouldn't have known what was going on. Early Watson also said something interesting after the game. He said as good as CJ Eleby was, this team might be better without him because they are more balanced and it forces more people to step up. Don't know that I agree with that, but there is something to it, time will tell. Tough, tough game against Stanford on Sat, not expecting a win, but if they play well they are capable of beating Stanford. They have size, but so do we, I am starting to like how Smith uses Abogidi, Jackson and Markovesky (sp?) between the 3 you have 15 fouls to give, don't want to waste them, but it allows them to be aggressive. Big man depth has not been a luxury in Cougar basketball history.

MacLean provided an analysis comparing Efe to Onyeka Okongwu that I found interesting. Efe's about 20 pounds lighter but the athleticism and inside/out ability seems there.

The point, enjoy Abogidi while we can.

His stock is definitely rising. Will really be a bummer if we do t get to see him play live.
