MBK Preview: Cougs face UCLA in rare midweek matinee Thur. (Story + Video)

What is with the 2pm tipoff on a Thursday? I realize there are no fans at the game, but if you want to promote the pac 12 network, this isn't the way to do it.

Us retirees love it. It coincides with our afternoon tea and doesn't disrupt dinner or bedtime. ;)

There are a few west coast games at 2pm today. Looks like Noah Williams made the trip. Maybe he gets a few minutes or some gamesmanship?

It's being carried on FS1. Great for me, I live in the Central Time Zone and it's actually being carried back here. Will be my first look at this year's Cougar team......bonus: I don't have to stay up until Midnight to see it all.

I didn't watch the game, but I just saw the score. What happened? For old time sake, did Ernie Kent coach the game today?

Not totally unsurprising. We’re a good, scrappy team, but the wheels can fall off for long stretches. Some of early season games, the last 3 minutes vs. Stanford, and today demonstrated that.

USC is likely going to thump us as well, but we’re young and tough. Great experience for next season.

Ernie actually won more games vs UCLA than Tony did.
Body of work but especially losing to mediocre Oregon State teams is what gets WSU football & men's hoops coaches fired.

They couldn't miss. We couldn't make. It was just a flat out demolition.
Actually, I thought we shot the ball fairly well today. Well, at least Bonton did. But boy, did UCLA ever shoot well. Probably the worst defensive game we've had under Kyle Smith. Many shots were uncontested, but the ones that were contested still went in for the Bruins. Yep, a good lesson that hopefully is being learned by this young WSU team.

UCLA was unconscious. They don't shoot that well in warm ups! Tyger 7/8 from 3 when he's usually 1/8. Our defense wasn't that great today but UCLA just couldn't miss.

Only if you count his 13 years at Oregon and not just his 5 years at WSU. Kent beat UCLA once as a Cougar coach, the year UCLA finished with a losing record and in 10th place of the Pac-12. That was Ernie's only conference win that year as the Cougars went 1-17 and finished dead last. Tony Bennett also beat UCLA just once (the game Rochestie played so well at Pauley), but over a 3-year period when the Bruins made the NCAA tournament in each of those 3 years. Don't let a little context get in the way of a super cool narrative.

Wasn't including UO (though true), misread end of Bone/start of Ernie era.
So basically they are 4-2 vs UCLA at home from 2013 to 2020. And they had only one win vs Oregon State in Pullman from 2013 until 2020 (and that was Smith who now has 2 OSU wins in Pullman). They have 6 11th or 12th place finishes in those 8 years.

Basic premise is true - bad body of work and losses to mediocre OSU teams get WSU FB & MBB coaches fired. Apple Cup, UCLA games don't figure in to it.

Btw, Media Guide (aka Record Book) downloaded from start of season had this in it. Hope it got fixed.

The comment was more made in jest regarding Kent's overall record at WSU, it wasn't specific regarding playing UCLA.

Sorry, I tend to be a stickler for accuracy.....and his original statement about Ernie winning more games vs. UCLA than Tony is not accurate (unless you count Kent's 13 years at Oregon) and is indeed quite specific to playing UCLA.
