I am speechless on how well this team was prepared for this game...especially given the circumstances. I was full on expecting a dumpster fire considering new coach, new offense, new D, no spring ball, Frosh qb etc...

And they looked way more prepared than Leach after a bye!

This offense is so fun to watch it is ridiculous.

The D was in a position to make a play all night. That is just night and day difference from last yr.

And think about this: JDL's Sophomore yr...with a lot of game experience could potentially have Borghi and Harris as weapons provided they stay.

Pac 12 Network's Evan Williams err...Evan Moore said this is the Run Raid...and it will give Oregon fits.

Can't wait!!

Agree. I think it's the approach/philosophy. Leach is sticking to his system, until they get it right. Learn from the pain of a loss.

Rolo, more interested in being balanced and focused on what works.

Let's not pretend like WSU hasn't lit up Oregon St for 6 straight years prior. While the Defense was impressive early we still gave up 28 pts. Oregon St couldn't tackle, couldn't block, and had a QB who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn when forced to move. It's great to be 1-0 but beating OSU isn't a sign we've suddenly arrived.

Oregon doesn't look 2019 LSU invincible but they are clearly a solid team. It's going to be a tough match up when our Offense is matched up against legit talent. Same for the D. On the plus side, I think we have a good shot at Stanford and UW.

We lit up Oregon State last yr?

Considering that we have lost to Portland State and Eastern Wa opening the season with a returning coach and spring ball, I would say this was a great start.

Said another way, we didn't look like a team that hired a new staff and didn't have spring ball.

I do agree we have a good chance against the teams you mentioned. Lake is actually going to have to work Apple Cup week.

This entire year is weird. OSU in a COVID timeframe makes it really hard to extrapolate.

Still hard not to get excited at how good JDL looked on the road, as a freshman, posting a victory in his first ever P5 game. It took the best football players in the world 4 years to learn how to adequately defend a runner like Russell Wilson, and CFB players will never figure it out if JDL proves to be a baller.

Do you think 54 is a lot of points? And check the scores for the last six years.

Hopefully he doesn't have to experience a bunch of fumbles to secure the ball.

First, I was very worried about this game and I'm very happy with the overall outcome of the game. JDL showed why he won the job. He brings a level of athleticism to the QB position that we've never had. That said, he looked like a young kid throwing the ball at times and he has a lot of room to improve. He needs to be sure that he doesn't become predictable in how he moves in the pocket. All that aside, I'm very excited to see what the kid after he gets some time in the film room with Rolo this year.

As far as the defense goes......ehhhhh, I'm still worried. I know that we had new bodies in there and lots of guys weren't able to make the trip, so we don't really know anything right now, but we gave up 21 points in the last 23 minutes of the game and potentially we were an on-side kick attempt away from being in the position to lose the game. Our defense was NOT good in the late third and all of the fourth quarter. It could be a case of losing focus and giving up momentum and not mean anything, but once our d-line wasn't able to hit their QB, he shredded our secondary. Giving up 250 yards in the air in a half is frightening.

I'm still excited about the win and there's a lot to be happy about, but there are reasons to be nervous too. I guarantee that Oregon State feels like they were the better team but breaking in the new QBs slowed them down too much early.

We always expect improvement between games 1 & 2, especially with a new staff. But this year? I'm expecting not just improvement, but also the introduction of more of the play book on both sides of the ball. Finally, how much do you think things had to be simplified to account for 1/3 of the team being unavailable? Hopefully that situation will be better next week, too. Oregon will be favored, and should be. They probably are the best team in the north. But I think it will be a game, and that is all that I ask at this point.

Did you see that we had to score on the final play of the game and convert a few crucial 4th downs to do so?

Hardly lighting them up.

We just had our second lowest scoring output against OSU in the past seven years and you are praising Rolo's dynamic new offense. I'm waiting until after Oregon to pass judgment on the offense. I'm seeing a lot of week 1 overreaction to JDL. Fact is he showed a ton of red flags as well as flashing some serious talent.

It was a good performance, but my expectations are pretty low for this year just because of everything that’s involved. While we praise Rolovich, you have to thank Leach for the offensive line he left us. A lot of talent there that will make JDL and the running backs life a lot easier.

Abe Lucas will benefit the most. He’s about to have 7 games of film of him run blocking. I don’t know if he goes 1st road but I think he can get into round 2.

It’s a bit premature to be talking about “red flags” in regard to a true freshman starting his first game during a complete clusterfrack of a year.

Yes, I am praising Rolovich's dyanamic new offense because we rushed for 249 yds in our first game of the season with a new staff, no spring ball, and a Frosh starting at qb.

Beating a Pac 12 foe the first game of the year is pretty impressive. Better than losing to Eastern or Portland State.

Probably not the instant classic that "Leach will never get it done here" turned out to be, but we shall see.

Also, apparently rushing yards is the new metric of success.

Yeah...249 rushing yards without our best back sure does suck. I sure hope it never happens again.

Anyone have points per possession numbers...offensive efficiency, stuff like that? Considering we 1. Ran the ball, 2. Let the play lock run down considerably more than a Leach offense would and 3. Actually played defense and forced them into long sustained scoring drives, I’d say points scored is a poor reflection of what happened Saturday vs previous tilts with OSU.

The play clock running down was mainly due to de Laura having to go to the sideline for the play call. He doesn't know the signals (which is not surprising). Could make two minute offense situations challenging.

Yards per play was 7.2. 2019 was 7.7. This exercise is obviously sponge's attempt to prove himself right about something that is not important. So, I'm not going to bother going back further. Plus, down, distance and circumstances of each game probably play a significant role in how the yards per play stat ends up.

Sorry you're not a fan of our new found ground success. You can watch your pass every down offense on Saturday by tuning into Miss State.

In my opinion winning the is metric for success. It does not at all surprise me that you don't think the same.

Which you seem to hate. We just won...and all you are doing is bitching and arguing just to argue. Color me surprised

I don’t care what the “reason” for the play clock is and I’m not trying to get in the middle of personal disputes...I’m just saying my eyeball test told me that was a completely different game than we’ve seen the last few years against OSU...or anyone for that matter. Fact is when you run the ball and snap it consistently with under 5 seconds on the clock it shortens the game/number of possessions. My hunch is our offensive efficiency and points per possession probably isn’t way off when looking at previous games w OSU. Anyone is free to prove me wrong though!

Underthrown deep balls, throwing behind receivers on crossing routes, and max effort throws when receivers are close resulting in drops. I don't think Jayden is going to figure those things out in the next 6 weeks. I expect him to get better at getting better at running some tempo as the season progresses. I love the moxie and he is a pure runner. Just don't expect him to carve up opposing defenses any time soon.

I think the getting too excited and throwing fastballs at guys who are 5 yards away will quickly be minimized with his heartbeat lowering as he gets experience and as he watches film and these situations repeat- he will show better touch. The thing that has me optimistic of his trajectory is his instant command of the offense, and ability to make good decisions and carry out the RPO. He has that part down already. With a freshman a lot of times that stuff takes a while to develop.

Im wondering if the fastballs are compensation for the exaggerated wind up he has.

Or am i seeing things with his throwing motion? Something looks... off.

More game time and maybe even more importantly more practice time will get a lot of things sorted out- like knowing the signals, tucking the ball away, better rapport with receivers, etc. It will help the coaches understand what he does best too.

The entire sample size of Rolo's offense is a good performance against a team we always score against. If you judged the Air Raid against Oregon St you'd conclude it was the most dynamic offense ever and impossible to stop.

Definitely going to have to work on that release. Not sure it correlates with velocity though.

You keep missing the context...and I keep writing it in my posts.

The fact that it was the first game, against a Pac 12 team(not Eastern or Portland State) with a new staff, first frosh to start the season in school history, with no spring ball....its pretty f'ing impressive.

Hmm...the post that you bring up ad nauseum(Leach won't get it done) was written when we were losing.

In other words, you are wrong. Go figure.

You constantly complained about Leach not running the ball, like you're doing in this thread. That was despite winning. So, you proven yourself wrong as you normally do.

And you're trying and failing to make it into something more than that.

Like all those Apple Cups we won despite Lake telling Leach he was going to rush 3 and drop 8?

Yeah, I bitched about not running the ball in those situations.

I don't like losing Apple Cups...and I certainly don't like getting blown out in them. Apparently you do.

Rolovich is our coach now. Not Leach. Get over it.

The ultimate irony. How about following your own advice.

The exaggerated wind up and scrambling without protecting the ball seem like something an 18yr old that was raised playing competitive flag football would do. Let's give him some time to work out the poor habits considering how long he's been in the program.
