More Prepared than Leach After a Bye

It’s a bit premature to be talking about “red flags” in regard to a true freshman starting his first game during a complete clusterfrack of a year.

"Clusterfrack". I love it. I will plagiarize this word. Believe it or not, I had not seen it previously, so Doggie, you get full credit!! ;)

Probably not the instant classic that "Leach will never get it done here" turned out to be, but we shall see.

Also, apparently rushing yards is the new metric of success.

Gib, I am old enough to remember a lot of years when rushing yards would have been a measure of success. I realize you were tongue in cheek, but the comment is probably valid. The times, they are a changin'.

I am beyond thrilled with our performance on Saturday, and JDL looks every bit like a future all-conference QB. With that said, I encourage everyone to pump the brakes HARD on making conclusions about this season, the defense, Rolo, etc.

I can think of at least half a dozen examples of teams this year following up great showings with complete implosions the following week.

Proceed with caution here....

The exaggerated wind up and scrambling without protecting the ball seem like something an 18yr old that was raised playing competitive flag football would do. Let's give him some time to work out the poor habits considering how long he's been in the program.
It is a odd and inefficient throwing motion; you would think that the coaches at St Louis would have worked on that with him.

First, I was very worried about this game and I'm very happy with the overall outcome of the game. JDL showed why he won the job. He brings a level of athleticism to the QB position that we've never had. That said, he looked like a young kid throwing the ball at times and he has a lot of room to improve. He needs to be sure that he doesn't become predictable in how he moves in the pocket. All that aside, I'm very excited to see what the kid after he gets some time in the film room with Rolo this year.

As far as the defense goes......ehhhhh, I'm still worried. I know that we had new bodies in there and lots of guys weren't able to make the trip, so we don't really know anything right now, but we gave up 21 points in the last 23 minutes of the game and potentially we were an on-side kick attempt away from being in the position to lose the game. Our defense was NOT good in the late third and all of the fourth quarter. It could be a case of losing focus and giving up momentum and not mean anything, but once our d-line wasn't able to hit their QB, he shredded our secondary. Giving up 250 yards in the air in a half is frightening.

I'm still excited about the win and there's a lot to be happy about, but there are reasons to be nervous too. I guarantee that Oregon State feels like they were the better team but breaking in the new QBs slowed them down too much early.
Gebbia did not look good early, but I don't think it was a case of breaking in a new QB. He started the Civil War last year and threw for 347 yards, 2 TDs against a good defense. For whatever reason, he didn't get into a rhythm in the first half vs. WSU. I like the fact that there seemed to be reasonable pressure by our d-line for most of the game, but he found that rhythm by the 4th quarter. Had there been another 10 minutes in the game, Cougs might have lost. But they didn't and I give credit to our guys for pulling out the victory. My biased eyeballs tell me that the defense is better this year despite a lot of new players. They seemed to rally to the ball better, tackle better, and stick with their assignments better. But there's truth in the statement that one game is simply too small of a sample size to really know.

Glad Cougar

The switch to a 4 man line was due. The bodies at DT are there now and more or less ready to play. The DE/Rush/Edge or whatever guys were already there.

and missing a few good players who are expected back on defense.

Bro, nobody is knocking him. Honestly, one of the best true freshman performances I've seen, and in a win to boot. I was questioning my own perception/ football knowledge: I'm not a qb coach so maybe his motion is ok or not as big of a deal as I think it could be? And not that it is a big deal at all, just picking nits.

My only real criticism, and this will also work itself out, is that he sometimes got happy feet where if he just stood in the pocket for half a second longer he could have hit an open guy in stride. I'm sure this is a function of getting through the reads faster, trusting the OL, being more familiar with the playbook, etc - stuff that will come with experience.

Underthrown deep balls, throwing behind receivers on crossing routes, and max effort throws when receivers are close resulting in drops. I don't think Jayden is going to figure those things out in the next 6 weeks. I expect him to get better at getting better at running some tempo as the season progresses. I love the moxie and he is a pure runner. Just don't expect him to carve up opposing defenses any time soon.

I agree with you generally, but I think Jayden's biggest problem is his zero fineness throwing motion. He winds up on every throw, like Kegel or Brink, though his throwing motion itself is twice, maybe three times a fast as theirs. Its insanely fast, but every throw becomes a fast ball, and a fast ball is the hardest to throw with accuracy and is the least catchable. This is exactly how he was against Bishop Gorman too. So it isn't just first game jitters thing and it probably won't change this year. But hopefully, by next year, he will learn, and have more clubs in his throwing golf bag. With his pump fake and feet, adding some Gesser/Minshew flat footed "off speed" throws as the situation demands, he could be very special.

Eh different era but Tebow won a Heisman and a couple of nattys with the same throwing motion. This isn’t the NFL. JDL has more than enough attributes to compensate for a wonky motion. He seems to have pretty good pocket presence which helps with a more wound up motion.
I know he will go through some rough patches too, but there’s way more to like than there is to be concerned about.

Very solid first game, all things considered. De Laura was great for a true freshman (and yes looked like a freshman at times). I really feel like he is going to shine once he gets a few games under his belt. I am worried about how we will perform against better talent, but loved how prepared the team looked (especially on defense)!

Maybe try doing a better job of proclaiming your righteousness next time. Your call on that.
So in other words, you can't answer the question and explain what bothers you so much about my post and are just starting sh!t like you always do.

JDL definitely has an odd and violent looking throwing motion. I don’t know if it means anything, but it looks odd as hell

Flat, when he really aired it out deep his motion looked pretty normal. It was the short passes that looked to me as though they were "violent". He clearly threw too hard for the receiver to handle it easily several times. It looks like it is going to take him some time to develop touch on the short passes. I'd guess we will see at least a little progress this week, because you know that film review will show the hard passes, and it will be a topic of conversation.

Sounds reasonable. In hindsight, it does seem like it was more noticeable on the short routes. Maybe he read all the anti-Brink rhetoric back in the day and thought, "That's not gonna happen to me!". ;)

What amazes me is with all the QB camps and intensive coaching these standout HS quarterbacks receive that they still have bad habits/mechanics at the college level.

Rather than getting into a discussion with you two, on this lets look at the facts.

1. Oregon State defeated, UCLA, Cal and Arizona St last year, all teams that the Cougs lost to last year. According the experts at OSU, this years team is supposed to be better than last year, while that remains to be seen, beating any Pac 12 opponent on the road is never easy, so good win IMO
2. Coaching staff, we have a brand new staff, there were concerns without spring and short fall training camp that this team would be unprepared. Considering the fact they were down 32 players, including our all pac 12 running back, and we were starting a true Freshman at QB. This team played very hard, tackled well for the most part, and seem to be prepared, and didn't give up the big play like they did last year, and on Offense had some big plays. Say what you want, but this was an impressive job by this coaching staff.
3. The QB, sure he had some flaws, true freshman, short training camp, yet you can see they guy has it. Most of his flaws can be corrected, and it looks to me like he could be one of the better QBs we have seen on the Palouse in years.

At this point, as much as I liked Leach, I don't care about him, this staff in their first game passed the test, and if they continue to make adjustments and improvements, this team could be better than many imagined.

Don't understand why we can't just be happy with this win and continue to expect this team to improve.

Who is not happy .

I don't think his mechanics are bad considering his style of play. If you're comparing him to a drop back, pocket passer, sure; however that's where the game has changed. Look around college, and even pro football today. Do Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, Deshawn Watson, Justin Fields have great mechanics? Mahomes has a great throwing motion when he sets his feet, but he rarely does that. He's an improviser.

I think JDL has a lot of developing to do, but I don't want Rolo to over coach the kid either. Mostly, I think he needs to improve his touch on the short and intermediate routes, which is something that gets said about virtually all young QBs. Apart from that, let JDL cook, as they say. I'll deal with some mistakes, because I know he's going to drive teams crazy with his ability to keep plays alive.

I think this is part of it. He had enough to worry about, and I know when I try to take a lot off of throws (like when playing catch with a kid), I'm all over the place, whereas if I repeat my motion and just throw the thing, I can be pretty accurate. They'll have to coach some touch into him, but it's understandable it wasn't in place yet. May just need to bring out Leach's old tennis ball machines to shoot lasers at these WRs to help them prep.

I am speechless on how well this team was prepared for this game...especially given the circumstances. I was full on expecting a dumpster fire considering new coach, new offense, new D, no spring ball, Frosh qb etc...

And they looked way more prepared than Leach after a bye!

This offense is so fun to watch it is ridiculous.

The D was in a position to make a play all night. That is just night and day difference from last yr.

And think about this: JDL's Sophomore yr...with a lot of game experience could potentially have Borghi and Harris as weapons provided they stay.

Pac 12 Network's Evan Williams err...Evan Moore said this is the Run Raid...and it will give Oregon fits.

Can't wait!!

This aged well.

This aged well.

What are you talking about?.

Last yrs team had a sr qb. This yrs Oregon game started a true freshman.

Last yrs team had a coach in his 8th yr. This yrs team had a coach in his first yr without a spring practice...and we were in the game in the 4th quarter to a better Oregon team.

And lets face it. Leach teams 9/10 looked like crap coming out of a bye.

He did have Oregon's number...and we should have won last yr...but I always cringed on game days after a bye.

7 on 7 is the equivalent of AAU ‘elite’ travel ball teams

If you think they are getting coaching on fundamentals, you’re quite mistaken. There’s a few legit coaches but that’s not the norm.

These belong in the Hall of Fame of knee-jerk reactions :

"I am speechless on how well this team was prepared for this game"

"This offense is so fun to watch it is ridiculous."

"The D was in a position to make a play all night."

Well...seems to me some would rather be right and play the "I told you so" game than see what I posted be true.

This seems like confession through projection from a guy who desperately wanted Leach to fail.

For the record, all I said is maybe we should wait until we aren't playing Oregon St to proclaim this an dynamic and explosive offense. I'm not happy about being right. But since we are getting destroyed in the second half of games the only joy to be had as a Cougar football fan right now is reminding this board of some fantastic hot takes from last year.

Thanks for being sensitive, though. Makes these posts a LOT more fun.
