Kept saying yesterday this is the first Apple Cup in history that the Cougs had a shot at the “conference title” (in this case the North) AND the Huskies were NOT playing for a bowl bid. What was 2003? UW won that game (ugh), finished 6-6 and no bowl. Had USC lost that day we would have won the conference, so we WERE playing for the title. What am I missing - besides being an idiot for listening to them.
They're not wrong as far as the point they were making. For all of the Apple Cup disasters WSU has endured over the past several decades, UW has almost always come into the games with vastly superior teams.
2002 and 2003 were tough ones, as we were the better team those years, but during the Leach years, when was that the case? The 2018 season hurt because we were at home and we had a great team, but so did UW. They had an NFL caliber defense and went on to win the P12 championship before losing the Rose Bowl to Ohio State 28-23. In other seasons under Leach, we entered the game as big underdogs, often times with significant injuries at the QB position.
This is the first Apple Cup in a long time where we're heading into the game with not only a better team, but with better intangibles in most categories.
Better W/L record: WSU
Better QB: WSU
Better passing game: WSU
Better running game: WSU
Better offensive line: WSU
Better defense against the run: WSU
Better passing defense: UW
Motivation. Team with more to play for: WSU
Go back through the years and highlight when this has been the case in previous Apple Cups. 2002-2006 we had some advantages, but UW wasn't a terrible team in 2002 and 2003.
