Seems to have completely disappeared? Possibly choked on crow after calling Smith a Dufus and saying he couldn’t recruit after his first class that he scrambled to put together which Noah who Ernie didn’t offer.

To Ernie’s credit 2 of his recruits are in the NBA - Flynn and Elleby, and he did a good job developing Franks and Hawkinson but the compliments end there.

But ElC, come on back, it looks like it’s going to be a good ride.

I get a little upset every time I think of Moos hiring Ernie. It was lazy good ol' boys hire and showed Moos didn't really care about basketball. There is no rule that says we can't be competitive in all our programs...especially football and men's basketball. WSU has made some incredible hires in men's basketball in the past, but always seems to have too many clunkers. We can't afford clunkers.

This can be a difficult gig. In retrospect Bone and Kent weren't exactly clunkers, but the job is unforgiving and exaggerates weakness. Given the lack of facilities and support, most coaches will fail here.

Smith is looking like a unicorn. He'd always had success in places where it's difficult to win, but he never had so much success that he became a must hire for a bigger program. Columbia never contends for the Ivy league title and Smith bounced before he got the program to that point. San Francisco is stuck behind Gonzaga and St. Mary's/BYU/Pepperdine locking them out of a possible NCAA bid barring a miracle season. Now at WSU he's completely transformed the roster and turned us into a dangerous team. The expectation is a post season bid with the NIT or NCAA's looking like a possibility.

Since it's the internet, he's this for a hot take: Smith might be a better coach than Bennett. Tony needed upper classman who knew his system to win. Smith has had a ton of freshman/sophomores taking big minutes and we held out own in a tough conference.

In the past 40 years our successful HC's have been Raveling, Sampson, and Tony Bennett. All three are headed to the HOF. The formula for success at WSU has been pretty simple: find a HOF coach before they make it and give them time. I'm not going to hold it against Moos for not finding someone who fit the bill.

That’s ok. I will.

I will hold it against Moos for not even trying to find someone who fit the bill. Kent was out of coaching for 4 years and NOBODY was interested in hiring him again until Buddy Boy Bill came along. EK had a few successful years at UO (not as many as you might think), but was struggling the last 3 seasons in Eugene and was trending down. Whether Moos could've hired a HOF coach is debatable, but it would have been nice if he had put some effort into the search.

Glad Cougar

I believe that Moos thought Kent was a good coach. He saw close up that Kent took Oregon to two Great Eights. In fact, in B.M.'s last year as Oregon AD, Kent took Oregon to the final eight. That is what Moos remembered. He wasn't there for the disaster that was Kent's last few years in Eugene.

I would rather he not come back. All he could do is criticize and name call. He posted as if he were an immature 10 year old.

Its far worse than just a lazy hire by Moos, he simultaneously dumped 10s of millions into football facilities under the misconception and selling the idea that facilities are the critical component in recruiting, when in fact it is the coach, as Kyle Smith is clearly demonstrating. Now we are left with Rolo floundering in recruiting, deeply in debt and no money to counter suitors when they come calling for Coach Smith's services, which they will.

Bill Moos will go down as a one trick pony, he hire Mike Leach, yeah!, but his administration of the athletic department was disaster otherwise.

I would add Dick Bennett too. He was successful in terms of taking a team from the disaster of Paul Graham and making them mentally tough....and also ending so many bad losing streaks.

Totally agree.

Have seen this in the business world where a startup brings in a guy with Fortune 1000 background who can't grasp the guerilla tactics or posses the skillset needed to go through that phase of a company's life cycle.

Moos had no clue on how to build culture, treat customers as valuable, build or manage systems and personnel, and, clearly, not a clue on how to manage a budget. He hired Mike Leach. I need a job where I close one sale over a weekend and ride that forever....

Being left with Rolo floundering in recruiting is on Chun. It's also on Chun to find the money when suitors come for Smith. That should be no problem since a lot of people find him to be a fundraising genius, right?

Moos is on the hook for the very terrible EK hire (and it was a horrible hire, I hated it from day one). But he also upgraded volleyball and soccer. Moos and Floyd had to make up for the lack of years prior administrations ignored facilities upgrades. And Leach doesn't come without the facilities upgrade.

I’m pretty sure Moos had an Assistant AD who led VB and soccer and handles the coaching searches for those sports. Yes, he blessed the hires but I think his assistants did tge heavy lifting for those programs.

You have to be kidding, or are you that linear in your thinking? Had Chun inherited a zero balance or a surplus, it would have been all on him, but that didn't happen. Moos inherited a program that had run small deficits for generations. He created one that was 70+ million in debt and running 8 figure annual deficits. Before Moos, the state legislature used to get their knickers in a twist over a million dollar short fall. Most of our current debt is a result on the FOB and stadium upgrades, proven worthless as recruiting tools, which we can't pay for based on current and projected revenues. Now with that as a back drop, Chun must find a way to retain Smith.

Others doing the heavy lifting is how Bill Moos has built his career. And then artfully take credit for others' work.

It's a skill. It's also narcissistic and sociopathic behavior but most 'normal' people don't even know when it's happening.

And when challenged, the 'normal people' are the folks who get put on the no-bowl ticket list or are condescendingly told they 'don't have skin in the game'.

Classic bully behavior.

FTG.

You just described essentially all CEOs of most companies.

I know the FOB was supposed to be paid for with Media money, particularly from the Pac-12 network but weren’t the Club seats and Luxury Suites on the south side of the stadium supposed to pay for themselves regardless of Pac-12 Revenue? They seem to be pretty much sold out so are they not paying fir themselves either?

They should have combined an IPF with a FOB, that would have saved about $40M.

It's quite astounding, isn't it?
I liked Pat Chun from the first time I heard him speak. He is a good leader. Do I like the woke idiocy that has crept into college athletics? No, but I suppose he has to play the game. Other than that, his decision making seems really solid...and I think his hires (Rolo is still a TBD) and contract extensions have been very good.

I never was a fan of Moos because of his arrogance and mostly poor coaching hires.

I heard his name tossed around for the Pac12 commish job. Imagine that.
