Why is Trump talking about a pardon for Rose? He didn’t break any laws, so a presidential pardon seems meaningless…not to mention being something the government really shouldn’t be spending time on.

And, if it does have an effect….should the president really be directly monkeying with the inner workings of a private organization?

Personally, I think Rose should be in the HOF. Gambling on games doesn’t change his accomplishments on the field. Alex Karras and Paul Hornung were both suspended for betting on NFL games during their careers, they’re both in the hall. Ty Cobb was an awful human and a dirty player, he’s in the hall. Cap Anson was almost single-handedly responsible for the MLB being segregated for 50 years, he’s in the hall. Whitey Ford has openly admitted to doctoring balls and cheating in games, he’s in the hall. This is an area where there’s not just a double standard….there’s a barely predictable sliding scale of what the rules are for each person. It’s should be just about what they did on the field.

Rose is also dead. I'll offer three theories:

1. If you're of the believe that Trump is a supervillain, obviously the reason is to expand pardon power.

2. An information campaign. Trump knows that a panel on MSNBC, CNN, NBC News, CBS News and ABC News, will have to vigorously debate how this will destroy the world, and its meant to distract the media from whatever villainy he is truly up to.

3. I am assuming this was Truthed (or whatever). The intern running the account has to hit the daily quota.

Super villain ... hmmm. Thinking he doesnt understand about baseball, HOF, and what Rose did was not something that needs to be pardoned. So number 4) Just sounds like a dumbass. .

It’s baseball season. He has a lot of baseball friends. He spoke. It stirred you enough to start a thread about it as it did the entire baseball world.

Took about a minute? Putin, Zelenskyy, Lindsey Graham, Rachel Maddow, Starmer, AOC, Ed, DGibbons, Willie, none of them seem distracted by Trump tweeting about Baseball. 🤷‍♂️

Let him into the HOF, put a note on the plaque about his betting and be done with it. Same for A-Rod, Clemens, McGuire and Bonds, albeit with pharmaceutical abuse notes. I mean, Ty Cobb is in and he was an abomination of a human being. It's all so ridiculous...
I’m somewhat less forgiving of A-rod, Clemens, McGwire, and Bonds. They were cheating, and they denied it (A-Rod and Clemens are also massive douchebags). But, there are other cheaters and douchebags in the hall, so I guess…

Counterpoint. Gambling was strictly prohibited and they weren’t even testing for roids while a LOT of players were doing it. Yeah they “cheated” but the league basically let them get away with it until the PR nightmare was too much.

I think they should all be in the HOF. and the transgressions are part of their story. Who said you had to be a choir boy? What all of those guys did on the field is phenomenal.

You can either hit the ball or you can’t. Plenty of people took steroids and never hit the ball.
Performance is what counts. If you think some sort of morality/behavior clause is warranted, then it must be explicitly spelled out and baseball hasn't done that. And since there were some guys already admitted with less than stellar behaviors, it would be pretty arbitrary to ban the newer scoundrels while keeping the ancient scoundrels in the HOF.

Isn't OJ Simpson still in the football Hall of Fame?

Some dumbass sportswriter didn’t vote for Ichiro. Baseball is the worst when it comes to “purists”. Which is why we also had Angel Hernandez changing games with his “strike zone” long after robo strike zone umps could have been implemented. And were still waiting.

Yeah, the reality is that steroids didn't help Bonds put the bat on the ball. Maybe his HR record deserves to have an asterisk, but his overall level of play still stands up. McGwire was beating the hell out of the ball before he was juicing (probably), the steroids just made sure he could keep doing it as he aged. And, the impact of steroids is mostly at the plate - they don't really help you field the ball.

I'll still take Ichiro and Junior over the others...but if the hall is going to be based on what happens on the field, then that should be the standard for everyone, and Petey should be in too.

And Trump - or any other president, governor, or congressman - should still not have any influence on it.

On Pete Rose and betting in general: I don't understand why it is even prohibited in any sport. With one exception - if you bet on YOUR team to LOSE, then you are banned. What is wrong with betting on your team to win, much less betting on other games? So what?
