Portal

If kids aren’t on the field I have no issue with them moving on somewhere they have a better chance of playing.

Some kids could be trying to get a jump on the portal. Maybe there is some value there. There is also value in continuing to practice and finishing the season. Get as much coaching as you can, spend as much time in the program as you can, walk away with all of the positive things you can and then move on.

Yeah Katzner entering the Portal now is stupid.

1. Because of Injuries, BOTH Jenkins AND Katzner would get carries, touches.

2. If Jenkins gets injured, he Katzner would get at least 5 to 9+ carries, touches, and might semi probably get 9 to 16 carries, touches.

3. Not only would he get those carries, touches, but he would probably get at least 4.9 yards per carry, be successful, have good marketable game film.

4. Next season, or the next season after next season, Watson would be gone, and Jenkins and Katzner would be the Thunder and lightning, the Reggie Bush, Len Dale white like combo, etc. Katz is only a FRESHMAN. He can't wait until he is either a Soph, or Redshirt Soph? That's rediculous.

5. If he leaves mid season, via the portal, he is NOT going to play ANYWHERE else, even if were at the FCS, Whitworth College level.

There is ONE and ONLY ONE possible reason, and that is if there is a LOCKER ROOM, ETC, problem, that has to do with Morris not giving RB's touches, carries, etc, like what Morris stupidly did to Jenkins, etc.

But even with something like that, leaving MID SEASON is just STUPID.

Oh Well, it's his decision, he can be stupid if he wants to.

The kid finally had an opportunity but being impatient is the downfall with kids today. I see it at my work too, kids just get hired and they feel they’re ready for management. Some feel entitled ready but you can’t management other employees with no experience. If you don’t promote them they threaten to quit, same applies to sports.

Kids get 4 years and they’re done. There should be an aspect of development and growing into playing time. That is fair. Keep in mind, the shelf life is 4 years and it’s over forever. A degree of impatience isn’t entirely unreasonable. It also isn’t unreasonable for kids to move on somewhere they can be on the field right away.

There is no overtime quarter in your NCAA eligibility. When it’s done, it’s all over. Kids need to recognize that playing time holds ultimate value and make their LOI decisions accordingly. “How long do you want to wait your turn?” That should be the #1 question asked by every coach at a non blue blood school recruiting against blue blood schools.

Any 4-5 star kid redshirting and then being a backup for 2 years before finally getting a legit shot…. just watched 50% of their most valuable asset go up in smoke for who’s benefit? Certainly not their’s.

Don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out. He had a chance to prove himself the last 5 games, and has elected not to do so. He has already redshirted, got the covid year, and so now he is in his 3rd year so there is no eligibility to be saved, you are only allowed one red shirt year he took that. Don't understand his move, but I assume he has his reasons, and he is probably getting bad advice from someone. I certainly hope the Cougs find a way to get to 7 or 8 wins, not sure 10-11 days between games is enough to fix the offense, if they don't, the portal could become a problem.

On the other hand...
3 years in the program and he's not really any closer to the field. 6 carries, all in the last 5 minutes of a blowout. Passed over by a freshman who's clearly better than he is. Traveled to Corvallis, but didn't see the field behind another freshman who did nothing with his carries. It's pretty obvious that he's not going to rise beyond a deep backup.

If he wants to play, his only option is to go somewhere else. Maybe he sees the field, maybe he doesn't. But here, he won't. So, good luck kid. Hope you find some PT somewhere, and I hope we use the scholarship to upgrade the OL.

I want him to do great. I'm betting he gets a Big Sky and does just fine.

However, of all the times/positions I trust Texas/Cali or Junior Colleges...

Give me running backs with crazy agility first... beefcake power and size second.

I know I'm a broken record on this, but we can/will find a transfer.

What are the rules on entering mid season?

As far as I'm concerned, any and all financial support received from the school is forfeit. You can stay enrolled if you want, but the tuition will be pro-rated for the balance of the semester. I'd even be ok with a formula that accounts for playing time so that deep benchers aren't given the middle finger on their way out. But this quitting mid-season bullshit is garbage and should be dealt with as such.

Personally, I’d be fine saying that if they bail mid-season, they owe back 100% of what was paid. Essentially, it cancels the contract.

But, since that would turn into a fight and make us look like dicks, and because the tuition for the semester is already paid, cut it off there. You can finish the semester for free, but we’re not paying for spring. Also:
  • You don’t get access to training & nutrition anymore, you have to pay for a meal plan starting today.
  • If you’re in an athletes dorm (which I’m not even sure they have anymore) you have to move out this weekend.
  • any university-issued equipment is due back by the end of the day.
  • No more tutoring. You’ll have to sign up for time like any other student. (I’ll reconsider this depending on how it works with APR. Your ass is out of here, but I’m not letting you burn my APR number on the way out)

I understand wanting to leave, he wants to play more, makes total sense, what doesn't make sense is why now? Can't he wait until December? Is there some advantage to declaring now that I am unaware of?

Get re-recruited. Start classes second semester?

Once it becomes clear you're not going to get on the field, why continue to spin your wheels? Get your classes in order, make sure you're eligible wherever you want to go, and focus full time on finding a destination. Eliminate the risk of a practice injury.

I don't see that there's a deeper PT reason. He took his redshirt in 2021, so this season still counts. Looks like he'll still have 3 to play though - he signed in 2020, but withdrew from school almost immediately after it started due to his mother's death. Kind of an unusual situation, even though this is his 3rd season connected with the team...I think 2022 is the only one that counts as competition.
