Will Nick Rolovich be the Cougars head coach the rest of the season

Yes. He’s not walking away from 3 large per year

No. I think he has made a choice and is sticking with it. Same for Schulz, Chun and Inslee.

He is 42 and has already had a check for $3,000,000 from WSU and whatever he made at UH. If he were smart with his $ he has a tremendous start on life and will have plenty of money coaching middle school football or NAIA ball.

Yes, the school will find a way to approve his exemption application and accomidate his position as head coach.

I hope so. He’s shown he can make the necessary adjustments to keep the kids in it, and to win games in conference. While the aura around the program might not be favorable, what’s happening in the locker room seems to be what we need.

If the university evaluates them the way they say they do, there’s no way for anyone to guess. They’re supposedly done by a review committee, with all identifying information removed. If that happens, all that matters is how he answered, and we can’t know.

The bigger question is, if the committee approves, does Chun say he can be accommodated? I don’t think that has been Chun’s inclination. But at 4-3 with a realistic path to a bowl game, the fallout of letting him go is far greater than if we were 1-6.

Chun will let him stay, if the committee provides a path to do so. And don’t forget, there’s also an appeal process, so this might not be over for weeks….although Rolo will be suspended while the appeal is heard.

Another variable - don’t be surprised if Inslee steps in if Rolo’s exemption is granted.

I don’t think it’s Chun’s decision to make. Schulz, along with the State who funds Washington Sate University is going to force his hand.

I want to see this play out, the team is playing well, but I’m fine with whatever happens too. As far as I’m concerned he’s decided not getting vaxxed is more important than his job, so if he is done it’s a decision he’s accepted.

I’m curious for those who fully support the non-vax stance, how will you feel about him if he comes after the university for $$, which I fully expect to happen. At that point to me it’s scorched earth for an institution that’s fiscally challenged to begin with, and for a guy who will have done nothing notable record-wise and will leave a program in way worse shape then how he found it…that will piss me off. Will some of you martyr him because of your beliefs and how he’s dug in on this over your support of WSU? Serious question not trying to pick a fight.

I am assuming the states Attorney General's office would be defending the case, not WSU.

Regardless of who he’d be “going after” and maybe that wasn’t the appropriate way to frame that question up as it relates to the university- but if it’s determined he’s owed his buyout, remainder of contract, rest of this year + buyout, etc, WSU is footing that bill. Bottom line if he’s awarded $ as a result of this it impacts what you can do and spend on the next coaching staff.

I am hoping he will be but am doubtful. I know quite a few state employees who put in for religious and medical exemptions and not one was granted. An impossible high bar was set for that to happen.

The state will defend it, and their position is that vaccination is a condition of employment. If you fail to satisfy that, you’re out. In an at-will state, employers can change conditions of employment freely (particularly when it’s in response to enforceable directives). Really, they don’t even need a reason to dismiss someone. There are other employees at WSU who will get their walking papers on Tuesday, and none of them are going to get paid out.
Rolo’s contract and it’s separation clauses are barely relevant. The state’s argument is that he fails to satisfy the basic terms of employment, so the contract is terminated. Under the circumstances, I agree with that. He should be paid a prorated amount through Oct. 18, and not a penny more.

Now…whether or not there should be an employee vaccination requirement in the first place is a different question. But since there is one…if he doesn’t meet the terms he should be out in the same way he would be if he was a janitor, mechanic, or teaching assistant.

Actually, that’s not true. NO bar was set. The state left it to the employer to determine how to evaluate exemption requests. It’s not even the same across state agencies. WSU’s bar isn’t really that high

He’s done well enough at WSU to reestablish his coaching career in a Red state.
May be the case but think about how long Leach waited for a call after TT. You cause unnecessary drama (and I’m not saying Leach did but that’s how it came across, hell people still think he locked a kid in a shed) then you won’t be considered for a lot of openings. Rolo would likely need to rebuild his resume as an OC or at a mid-major. It’s going to be a while before $3 mill+, regardless of state.

I saw a Tennessee fan posting tweeting the Rolo would look good in Knoxville...so I think there may be something to him coaching in a red state.
Football is dying out west.

One of Rolo's failings is not giving out schollies or PWO spots to D3 players and Tracy Ford clients like Ian Furness' kid.

He lost a game he should have won, probably won a game he shouldn’t have lost. I think there is some brilliance on the defensive staff.

I think the kids play hard for him. They didn’t quit. Some of the things you would hope for a leader.

So strictly football he would keep his job.

We’re not talking about sexual assault or locking a kid in a storage shed (which was BS). At the very least, Rolo would be on the short list for OC jobs at power 5 conference schools. For as much as he’s hated out west for taking a stand, there are fan bases in Red states who would embrace him for it. He’ll just have to find the right fit, and regardless, he’ll be walking away with a decent settlement.

This 3 game winning streak saved his career. He’d be heading to D2 or FCS if he gets canned without it.

Variable I hadn’t considered, and I don’t 100% know the answer to, but…

if he gets canned, and he sues…especially under these circumstances, any settlement might come from the state insurance pool instead of from university funds.

I think there are state schools that would nix the idea right away. Why deal with it? If he is hired it will likely be at a private school in a state without vax mandates.

He is not the typical State “at will” employee. The State can’t make a new condition of employment, fire him for not living up to it and not pay him his severance in his contract. If fired, he gets paid.

I predict he stays and has to keep wearing masks etc. while everyone else doesn’t as the “accommodation”

And when he goes into the house of a an or oline man where the parents are vaxers, then what?

Wear a mask. Take a rapid test prior. Probably safer than the vaccinated coach who shows up without either since the vaccine doesn’t prevent infection or transmission.

I certainly hope the decision to retain/placed on leave without pay decision isn't made based on politics or religion. I hope it is based on what is in the best interest of the program long term. Three wins tends to make people reconsider, and the team is playing damn hard for him, without question. But lets not forget recruiting now, and in the future. We appear to be heading for a top 90 class, the worst since the Wulff era. How well can an "accommodated" coach, recruit vs 11 other head coaches who are unfettered, 1 of whom clearly doesn't have any ethics?

Also let's not forget Rolo is party to a "civil rights" lawsuit, describing him as a racist, mistreating a black football player, who was a member of the WeAreUnited, who was basically dismissed from the team because of that involvement. Then Rolo was caught lying about it, a lie exposed by a likely illegal tape recording.

We'd be naïve to assume that these claims, made in a federal lawsuit on information and belief, will not be used over and over by other schools to lure recruits away from WSU, and will not have a chilling effect on recruiting. These claims do not have to be true, nor the lawsuit ultimately meritorious, serious damage to Rolo's ability to recruit has been done.

Bottom line, Rolo might be able to get us to a bowl game with Leach's top 50, top 60 recruiting classes, in the short term, but a series of likely Wulffian top 100 recruiting classes to come, means some very lean years are a coming, if he is retained.

Of course he will !

The current governor of this state can go to hell, and take all his failed policies with him !

The University will grant him an " exemption " - what a farce this whole episode has been.

Woods and all the BLM thugs are clowns, any court will toss Woods out on his sorry ass !

All the posters here that have spent MONTHS now, with the virus arguments back and forth are simply a waste of bandwidth, AND YOU ALL KNOW WHO YOU ARE !

IF you didn't hear it for yourselves last nite, let me repeat, it went something like this :

ALL YOU POSTERS BAGGING ON COACH, STOP IT, WE LUV COACH !

Love him all you want. It won’t stop him from being fired.

My religious and political views had nothing to do with my assessment, which remains the same. He should have received the vaccine just to avoid all this. Plenty of other religious coaches have made that pragmatic decision and the Pope has said people should receive it, as I would expect to be highly relevant to Rolo's decisionmaking. This isn't to say I'm a fan of the mandate, necessarily, even though I am vaccinated and believe just about everyone should get vaccinated. Like a lot of things, though, it's complex. It just was plain as day even pre-mandate that this stance wasn't going to be feasible.

Couldn't be happier with these three wins, but it just makes me all the more disappointed his stance on this has led to our recruiting dropping off the map and tons of distractions for the program. This should be a pretty exciting time--even more exciting if JdL had started against Utah State, most likely--and we instead are in a position with very few ways this could work out well for us as fans. Even what one might call a best-case scenario of the exemption being approved and him being accommodated is going to lead to this saga never ending and an enduring overhang on the program and recruiting. I think recruiting might pick up a bit if he survives this mandate deadline and it looks like he'll be around for a little while, at least, but it still will be hindered and it still would have been damaged greatly earlier.

The whole thing is sad actually. And unfortunately you can’t take the politics out of it. I don’t think WSU has any choice, the Gov wants everyone to get vaccinated, has mandated all state employees to do so, and exceptions won’t be made for the State’s highest paid employee.- The media has been all over him writing 2-3 articles a week regurgitating the same thing. Major donors are upset and withholding funds, as a major research institution, the science and the numbers strongly support the vaccine, yet he is in defiance. Had Rolo been more transparent about this as to why he wasn’t getting vaxed may had been helpful to generate a little support. He has embarrassed and undermined the AD and the President. I’ve been vaccinated, I don’t believe in mandates, but as a coach, a leader, and being the states highest paid employee Rolo should have gotten the shot. When you are paid 3 million a year it is no longer just about you, and if he didn’t understand that he never should have taken the job.
The sad thing is his players seem to love him, he now, after a 3 game win streak seems to show why we hired him, he has just out coached 3 decent coaches, and things are looking up . Being on a Team we all have to make sacrifices, in Rolo’s case it was simply getting a shot, which over 80% of his players and 95% of the students have, yet he is going to bail on players, and do the selfish thing. Rolo is in charge of his own destiny so he is not a victim of anything, his victim is WSU and the long term damage he has caused the University and the football program. He has left his AD with no choice.

You, as far as my way of thinking, couldn't have expressed this any better.

I hope he stays.

Expect somehow for it to happen that he does.

Realize I'm likely not being objective on this.

Wish it wouldn't have come to this point of which i hold him primarily rsponsible.

That's all I have to say about that.

I don’t disagree with your assessment, but I think that if Chun and Schulz had made up their minds on getting rid of him, it would have happened by now. I now believe that if Rolo is granted his exemption, he will at least be allowed to finish the season.

Unless they want to pay him his buyout they have to wait for the process to play out before they can him.

Spot on.

I think 10-15% of the fan base is going to be hot as hell if he gets fired.
10-15% will be happy
The rest of us will be sad watching an avoidable tragedy unfold.

I heard somewhere that, regardless of the decision this week, Rolo can appeal and will likely be allowed to finish the season. I hope that’s the case.

He may be able to appeal a denial of exemption, I don't think he can appeal a negative outcome on accommodation

The conundrum for WSU is that 5-6 of our coaches may not be vaccinated. WSU is going to do everything they can to at least delay the termination until season end.
