"For me, the Apple Cup never was, and never will be, just another game on the schedule. This one is always special.”

After almost a decade of watching us fall flat in the AC, I long for the days of a staff and team that realizes just how much this game means to the fan base and alumni.
I hope we come out and play with our hair on fire!

Brink said the same during the pregame show last weekend. Said Doba had many Cougar greats come in to talk about what the game meant to them and to get the kids fired up.

It’s not just another game and that mind set has clearly done shit for us the past 10+ years. Loved Leach but I did not agree with his mind set on this one.

Something tells me that this years team and coaching staff is approaching the game differently then what has occurred in the past. I sure hope so because just like everyone else, I am tired of losing to the huskies.

They have had the Apple Cup count down "clock" running all year. Now we need a coach who can own this series. We've dominated it in baseball, soccer (currently), track, won seven straight during the Bennett era in basketball. Its time for football!

Price fell flat in the Apple Cup 11 of the 14 times he coached in it.

Well, to be fair, the 1996 and 2002 Apple Cups were games we could have (1996) and should have (2002) won. When Price's teams lost the Apple Cup, UW was the decidedly better team. It wasn't a case of us falling flat.

Leach only had a better team than UW in 2013 and 2018. All other years, UW was much better.

I don't think we were better than them in 2018. Even maybe, but in a cold, snowy environment, I would take their defense over us every time.

In 2013, UW won 9 games and finished the season beating us and #25 BYU in their Bowl game. They also blew out a good Boise State team that year and lost by 3 at #5 Stanford.

Not splitting hairs with your point, but Leach never got an easy UW opponent by any means.

My bad, I meant 2014, Peterson's first year. They were definitely better than us in 2013.

As for 2018, I think we were close enough to them that we were capable of beating them on a good day. But you are right, their defense was still littered with NFL players.

Yea, I think the only thing we can objectively say is that we were close to them those years and could have won. Should have won? Maybe in 2018 if the weather was normal. The bad weather gave their defense a huge advantage.

This year though, there aren't many UW fans or local talk radio people saying that UW is the better team.

Yeah, but unlike Leach, he never made excuses for consistently falling flat or developed "the just another game" fiction. He did the right thing and repeatedly apologized for not doing better.
WSU hasn't had a lead in the 4th quarter of the Apple Cup since 2007.

Wow…..I guess I missed all of Leaches apologies. All I remember is him blaming the OL or some other excuse for not having the team ready for the first game of the year or a bowl game.

I’m not sure if he ever did it on tape, but listening to him talk about the snow bowl, specifically when the UW bus pulled up to the stadium is f’ing gold.

How czn this be since we won in 2012? Did that game not include a 4th qtr? Asking for a friend. That's all I have to say about that.
They never led in the 4th quarter.

Game went to OT

2008 never led in 4th quarter (or for entire game).

Ah, good tidbit then. That's a kind of depressing data point is all i have to say about that.

You known as bad as it's been I still can't always help but compare us to Oklahoma st. vs Oklahoma. Seems it doesn't matter how good the cowboys are each year in that matchup they get beat or crushed. It's 90-18 with 7 ties and currently they have lost 6 straight. Prolly gonna happen again this year.
