Really thought CML would retire in Pullman

I took these "dalliances" as Coach Leach holding the administration's feet to the fire for a top-shelf new Indoor Practice Facility. Brand X and Brand Y insinuated as much over the past year or two.

Truly didn't think he ever would leave WSU when it came down to it.

Would love to have heard what Schultz-Chung came up with as a counter offer.

Would $4.5M per have done the trick? Maybe $5M annually, an increased recruiting budget and maybe more enhancements to Martin Stadium?

Looking forward to hearing what Mr. Chun reveals in his next media briefing.

Bottom line: Really gonna really miss the Pirate of the Palouse.

Not every day that a Division I football program is blessed with a Hall of Fame caliber coach.

Thanks again, Coach Leach.

Honestly have to question if there even was a counter offer. He's wanted to leave for three years, not much we could do to sway him at this point.

Pete,

Not sure why anyone would think Leach would have stuck around. If the Tenn interview, coffee break, or whatever some of the posters want to call it didn't fall through, he would have gone to the Vols...and it was a way better situation for him.

Leach probably didn't like playing in front of 32k. Also, I think at the beginning he sold WSU better than even Coug coaches sold WSU. But I never got the feeling he ever got attached to a school, whether it was Tech, WSU, or Valdosta State.

I remember when Walden left, he was on TV balling his eyes out. WSU and Pullman meant something different than it did to Leach. Not saying good bad, just different. Will Leach ever feel compelled to donate 5 to 10% of his gross earnings while at the school like WSU similar to what Walden did? I don't think so, I don't feel like he ever felt Pullman was his permanent home.

As stated Leach has wanted to leave Pullman for three years. His tenure served both Leach and WSU well It was time for him to leave,

No reason to make one.

If Schultz/Chun has sweetened the pot, you don't think CML stays put?

Maybe he didn't "feel the love" from WSU's administration when word leaked out that Mississippi State might be interested?

I think the staff poaching broke the camels back

WSU paid leach well. There just wasn’t enough money to maintain continuity of the coaching staff. Not really anybody’s fault It’s just the economics of the situation imo.

Walden was making what? $70k per season at WSU?

Walden doesn't live in Pullman.

Honestly, $4MM worth of love is all he is worth, if not less. As I posted before, he's 4th in the P12 in salary and 3rd in the north before Pete left - now he's second in the north. We're bottom half P12N last year and probably going to be again this year, if for no other reason than other teams are good or getting better.

His biggest pay day I believe was under 200k a year. He was making 70k in 1978. Made 125k I think after the the 81 season. How much do you think he made in his nine years at WSU?

I heard something interesting on the Radio today, listening to John Clayton as he was discussing Leach leaving with Jessamyn McIntyre.

Clayton said, "I don't think this is Leach's last stop, I still think he wants a shot at the NFL, there were a few rumors this year, and if he does well at MSU, the NFL could be in his future." That actually shocked me, as I don't know that Leach and his personality will work in the NFL.

No coach at WSU was making much at all in the 1980s.
Definitely way under $100k from WSU sources.

3 former Big Sky coaches ended up in the Big 9 in the early to mid 1980s. It was because teaching & coaching HS football in eastern Washington paid as well as being college assistant.

Things changed dramatically starting in 90s.

You nailed with this post. Losing 4 coaches in 4 years to Nike U a program in your same division when they increase their salaries substantially, had to be hard to take. Would be for any coach.

from the outside looking in I think the poaching and this years perfect storm about wore Leach out.

pretty tough to climb the mountain if your rivals keep knee capping you and leaving you short handed.

but hey, the rumor is that Helfrich is in the mix for HC, so TAKE THAT OREGON!!

Leach was never a Pullman man. They tossed him a needed lifeboat and he took it and did very well, He was always looking to leave after the first three years. He did not like Pullman and wanted to be in the Keys and spent a lot of time there. He was not fully vested in his whole time there. He needed to prove himself and he did. WSU benefited from his time in Pullman so it worked both ways.

I think 2018 was Leach's best coaching job, maybe ever. I think 2019 for whatever reason weighed on him. As magical as 2018 was, 2019 was just the opposite.

For his sake I wish he took the Tenn job because it much more conducive to success. I think taking the Miss St job shows how much he wanted to get the batteries recharged.

I think one of the positives is he much closer to his daughter and the grandkids in Atlanta, at least I believe that is where they are.
