The recruiting news has seemingly ground to a standstill The cougs really need to find another recruiter and jettison Curtis Allen. Kent s loyalty to a friend is costing him big time in the recruiting business I wanted Allen gone when Kent first took the job.. The cougs lately have expressed interest in a 6'8 300 pd Juco Darnell Cowart. He is a vertically challenged big man with soft hands and is reputed to be an outstanding passer. The cougs may be better off offering 7'4 Riley Sorn who needs weight and strength to compete at the D 1 level. Cowart needs to lose 50 pounds and get in decent condition. before he can even think of competing in the PAC 12. I rather have a local product sitting than another project. Kent.at this point, needs to either jump start the program or completely change his recruiting strategies and recruiter.Perhaps the new coaches can find their feet and start bringing in serious talent .But the ace recruiter is flat not doing his job.

Saw Darnell Cowart looking around today but it doesn't appear we have offered yet or anyone else of note either.

El you are so full of crapolla.

First of all Curtis Allen is a very good recruiter and in fact gets us most of the coast guys. He got us 2/3 of the best 3 on the court.

Secondily, he is in no way shape or form a "buddy" of Ernie Kent. He got MF, all Tacoma guys, Daniels, Franks, and Gittens.

Can you say, you don't know squat.

It is Kent himself who fails to close on recruits and is never seen anywhere.

Agree on Curtis - he's fine, what we need is for the other coaches to step up. Haskins getting Elleby is a start.

By the way, Berto Gittens is playing at powerhouse Southern Idaho. Averaging 9.2 ppg playing 18 minutes a game. He plays behind some highly recruited sophomores. Nice shooting numbers - 43% on three's and 91% from the FT line. He should have a big year next season for CSI - hope we can hold on to him.

So funny man people complain of the players recruited by Kent. They talk about too many jucos, not D1 material etc.You cannot have it both ways little man You somehow are enamored with the cougs top recruiter. Oh by the way, the" best players" were not highly recruited. Kent went with a recruiter who cannot even get the best players recruited into Pullman. It is no coincidence that very few players ever visit Pullman, Kent let the wrong coach go.

At the end of the day getting recruits comes down to the head coach.

The morning starts with the arrival of potential recruits in Pullman. If one looks at rival OSU and what their recruiter brought to the table,WSU pales in comparison

Yeah, Tinkle who would have been a far better choice brought in his son as well as the son's of one of his assistants.

The Head Coach gets the credit for everything. It was certainly that was for the coach you didn't care for.

And what in the world are you talking about on "the morning starts with the arrival of potential recruits in Pullman" the team, and the coaches are in Seattle and there are no recruits arriving in Pullman in Hoops.

El always complained about the recruits Bone brought in. Praises the recruits Kent brought in, until they fell flat on their face. Bone= bad recruits but more wins. Kent= better recruits but fewer wins.... who’s the better coach?

Recruiting needs to be a building process and the cougs need a couple of big men. I like Flynn ,Franks and a couple of others But this year has only seen Elleby and they need a couple more. A local "product sitting' refers to having a Riley Sorn on the bench rather than another ineffective big man. At least Sorn would have a few years to develop.Yes that is the problem 71, the cougs need a top notch recruiter who can get the recruits in ,so Kent has the chance to close the deal. Coach Haskins is learning but Allen has been there with Bone and that was the problem. He cannot recruit at a higher level, Kent should have cleaned house with all of Bone s staff and maybe thrown away basketballs etc.

Nah, time for Ernie Kent to simply resign as he hasn't had a good Season for many many years and hasn't gotten a 4 star recruit for even longer, not to mention a 5-star player. His recruiting guy went to Kentucky and that was the end of his Oregon career. His WSU tenue has been simply horrible in the recruiting front. I really don't care if Allen is kept or not, but if he went there would have been no Flynn, no Franks, and no Gittens.

Kent is simply a horrible coach but we are stuck for some time due to Moos.

Whatever, but you will have to live with Kent for at least 2-3 years. Kent is not going anywhere soon. If he does leave ,it will be because he wants to leave. If Allen had not been there, there might have been a few more players and perhaps some 4 star players. Chew on that for a bit. Damn ,if you graduated in 71 ,you have been around for a long time/.

BLASPHEMY, YOU BLASPHEMER, YOU!

There is another big juco availiable. He is 6'9 285 pd Amari Mc Cray from Howard juco. He averaged 12 pts,12rbs and 3 blks per game in La HS. At Howard he averaged 5 pts and 3 rbs per game as juco frosh, in limited time .He moves well and is not earth bound. He now has offers from Va Tech and NMSU. He is a far better player than the other big man they have interest in. The cougs seemingly need help in finding good players to recruit. The list of eligible players is dwindling as the cougs ace recruiter seems lost.

Why on Earth would anyone sign a JUCO that averages 5 pts. and 3 boards.

If one would look at the tapes.one can see size and potential. The cougs expressed interest in a 6'8 300 pounder who is averaging 12 pts and 8 rbs and has no known offers This guy has two legitimate offers and is not earth bound like the other guy. The cupboard is rapidly emptying unless the cougs have a line on a couple of graduate transfers.

Also 6'10 Jeffrey Otcherre is another juco who shows a lot of athletic ability. If the cougs do not have players already sewed up, then they need to start looking at available players. I did not watch the ASU game but i guess that Cooper looked decent during his time on the court?

Cooper didn’t play from what I remember.

Yeah like Silvey Dominguez or Greg Graham ever recruited a single player for WSU. After all this was Ernie Kents choice of assistants. Certainly not mine.
You need to pull head out of sand and open your eyes.

I am pretty sure no matter what we agree or disagree on about the state of the program most were concerned with the makeup of the staff having both Dominguez and Graham on it. Keeping them 3 years only made things worse.

WSU/Pullman is challenging enough without making fundamental mistakes. If recruiting was on the shoulders of one guy that probably was not the best model for success.

No one ever stated that Dominguez and/or Graham were great recruiters. It is amazing that people try to absolve Allen of his part in the recruiting woes. The man may be a nice man,but he just is not a top notch recruiter

I really don't care if Curtis is retained or not. If Ernie thought he could hire a better recruiter than Curtis he would do it tomorrow. He certainly isn't keeping him out of any sense of loyalty - he just jettisoned two of his oldest friends in basketball. Curtis by the way has been the lowest paid assistant in the conference - he made about half what Dominguez and Graham each made. Maybe Ernie could cut a few hundred thousand from his own salary and hire a top recruiter to replace him.

In the last 15 years WSU has signed just three kids who were rated as 4 stars out of high school and Curtis recruited two of them. I'm hoping Ed Haskins can make an impact but am a bit skeptical how he will do when his player contacts in Seattle begin to diminish.

Ultimately recruiting, game management, player development, graduation rates, retention, all of it falls on one person that’s the head coach!

I have no problem with that. It is up to Kent to right the ship and he needs to do it fast.

Well we are 9-13 with 8 games left. 7 of the 8 against .500 or less (league) teams is what I read? I'll shut my mouth until that is over. Then the seat heat will get turned on (or not).

It won’t matter because Moos locked in Ernie as a going away present.

I wish you would quit saying that. He's not going anywhere in 18-19. We know that. Maybe he will have a comeback year in 18-19 and we will all be happy.

If not, in a year he will have 3 years left. 4.2 million. He will be 64. A multimillionaire. A lot of things could happen. He could "decide" to retire with a reduced payout. Stranger things have happened (Oregon State Football for example). WSU could decide to pony up the money and stop the bleeding. Basketball is supposed to be a revenue generating sport. It made money in the good years. It could again.

I am not sure hoops can be a profit center at WSU in today's environment. PAC 12 network has had a much more adverse impact on remote locations like WSU. It depends on how TV revenue gets allocated to basketball, but my guess is it would take a resurrection to near a GU level to make a significant impact. Remember, a couple thousand more student sport passes doesnt contribute much, and Thursday nights in January are a lot more daunting drive from Spokane or even remote corners of Whitman County.

Ava is probably correct on where we would need to go. I remember the Indianapolis Star/Knight Commission had a database for college athletic finances. Financial reporting can always have a healthy "creative" element but I remember being surprised we really didn't make much during the Tony Tournament seasons. Basically covered expenses, which I doubt we have since.

I also agree there hasn't really been a plan in place for basketball. At the same time we don't exactly have the money laying around to make the kind of necessary investment we need. So we have just thrown darts at a board and hoped. Probably hasn't been a plan or high priority since Sterk left.

While I didn't want Leon Rice I still can't believe Ernie Kent was the best option available for $1.4M/year. Now that Moos is gone I don't know what Chun does other than stop the rollovers.

Yeah the small GU model of 5000 seat venues is much easier and that is in a town of 300,000 locals. They should get something much smaller or reconfigure Beasley a bit.

Doesn't the hoops people also use the new football facility to workout and to eat?

Yes the funding for basketball has been lacking.yet because Moos liked baseball they put money into a new facility. That is absolutely money wasted so that 300 fans have a new facility.

Another JC offer: Yannis Mendy (6-8 F). Mostly a looks like a low post player. Would hope he's a deeper backup plan. I still might rather a Riley Sorn even though he's at least a few years away. The first highlights that came up on Mendy included a screen but looks better in the video below.

http://www.verbalcommits.com/players/yannis-mendy

Is anyone still recruiting Sorn. I would really like to see us take a shot at him but it is troubling that he doesnt even seem to be getting interest from mid majors. Maybe he is.

Sorn is getting interests from midmajors, I rather have Sorn than more jucos who are not athletic enough to play in the PAC There is at least one current player who should be encouraged to transfer . This would open up a spot for Sorn. he is ,at the worst,a major PR coup, and with a real chance to develop. This guy Mendy is the kind of player,Allen brings to EK to "close "the deal. Mendy only has offers from Albany and New Hampshire along with the coug offer. He is not scoring in double figures or in rebounding. Think about that for a couple of minutes.

Don't really need to free up a spot do we. They gave Spreygion a scholarship, but he is a senior. Would love to see us have another prospect that would force us make room for Sorn
