The Regents meet tomorrow to approve a $500k increase in the Athletic Dept. budget. They have to approve anything over $250k. Probably explains delay in an announcement of the Smith hire.

Atleast we got him on the cheap. If we paid 1 million for this hire I would have flipped. I hope this works but I am guessing we will not get over the NCAA hump during his tenure. On the bright side he has a chance to raise the floor of the program.

Prepare to flip. They are increasing the budget, which means salary's are going up.

I don't know if that necessarily means his salary will be $500K. In fact, I would be surprised if he isn't making at least $1 million, to tell you the truth. Somewhere I read Smith was making less than half of what Kent was making....so that's less than $700,000. But probably not much less.

Glad Cougar

I really hope they don't overpay. I don't mind rewarding success but you have to show it first. I guess when you are as big a mess as we are money is the big draw. A little success and you can jump ship for big bucks.

6 years, $1.4M. Same as Ernie. That's a very fair deal for Pullman. He's still one of the lowest paid coaches in the conference.

Let me ask...why shouldt Smith, Leach or anyone that takes a WSU job take it on the cheap, a discount if you will. You are asking coaches to win with less. You want to pay them less. Smith should be compensated market rate. Actually they should be paid more for doing it with less.

WSU Basketball still managed to make a profit which actually was a surprise to me. I agree with Brent H. I see 6 years and at least $1.4M. Not a chance he's coming on the cheap.

Confuscious once say "Bird in hand, worth two in bush"

Or he can stay at USF and make less than half that...

If they are talking about increasing THIS year's budget, $500K+ would likely be 3 months salary for Smith and his assistants. I don't know if Brent knows Smith's salary is 1.4 million or not, but I'm sure it will be in that neighborhood.

I could see it being $900k but with big time incentives and like $100k increase every season too...

But Brent is probably correct, probably exactly what Ernesto was making, which is fair.

My guess is that the 500K is for the video equipment that he will need.
