Interesting, but I'm not exactly holding my breath. If Mateer draws the kind of $$s being thrown around I not only wouldn't blame him for leaving. I would think he should take it if the situation that comes along with it makes sense for him. Sucks for "us", but that's just the reality of present cluster college athletics.

I have no idea if Dickert's in any demand, but I haven't seen a logical landing spot for him. In some ways he reminds me of early Price.

Jessamyn McCIntyre, Cougar sideline reporter, saying on KJR Mateer and Dickert are tight and both are staying.
Apparently he “liked” a SM post saying him leaving was BS…fwiw. This. Is. Silly. Season.

I hope he stays that makes things a helluva lot more interesting going into next year and IF Dickert can hit on the OC hire… look out. I’d also have to say having Mateer back would be a helluva recruiting chip for attracting an OC.

Save, I can see your "early Price" comparison. Some of Price's charisma with his players was very similar to what I see with CJD. Some of CJD's clock management, halftime adjustment and other learning processes are also pretty reminiscent of Mike P. Price did eventually develop a pretty darned good core staff, and I think CJD will get there. You could argue that it took Price at least 5 years to get there...CJD seems similar. I'd say that Price did a better job of playing to the media and alums. Price did not have to deal with a league collapse, NIL, unrestricted portal (though he did have Prop 48) or the rest of it, though, and I have to think he was probably under less personal stress.

Good observation. I had not thought of the Price/Dickert similarities, but now that you have pointed them out, they are definitely there.

Mateer has 2 years of eligibility left, WSU can rub a few dollars together and come up with something that might be worth a few hundred thousand for next year between the collective, the casino, and the car dealership. That gets him through another year at WSU. with a great season next year, he could be worth 2 million plus going into the portal next year for the 2026 season, as crazy as these numbers are. So, getting another year of Mateer wouldn't surprise me, nor will him declaring for the portal next week.

Hard to put too much stock in that report. The portal doesn't even open for another week, so whatever offers he has on the table may get bigger.

While I'd like to see him stay, and see if we can come up with an OC who can actually take advantage of his skillset (and call plays for an entire game), if he really does have a 7 figure offer I'd say he has to give it some serious thought. I don't like the portal or NIL, but he's got to take advantage of the situation he's in. He's still a longshot candidate to make NFL money, so if he can get someone to pay him a mil per year to play for 2 more years....it's hard to not tell him to take the money.

It's not generational wealth, but it's enough to get a 20-year old a pretty damn good start on life. I've been working professionally for almost 30 years, and I'm not sure I've seen $2M cumulatively over that time. If he's got a chance to get that much in the next 2 years, it puts him in a position where - assuming he's smart with the money - he can call his own shots for most of his life, and won't be forced to accept a shitty job to keep the bills paid like the rest of us probably did.

I probably like to compare too much, but the complete change of landscape makes any comparison to former coaches that much more thin. Those are where I see it with Price to Dickert. Both pretty green for this level. One other difference is the side of the ball they came up on. Over time I realized how much that seemed helped the defenses under Price (recruiting of course as well). Price also hired a couple of pretty good DCs in Zimmer and Doba.

It sucks that Dickert hasn't been PERFECT in coaching, but it is reasonable to expect him to learn and improve.

Because we aren't the richest school in the world, it's probably best to keep Dickert and I think the Mike Price comparison is fair... even though Mike Price was 1 in a million coming from Weber State if I remember correctly.

But let's also take responsibility Coach Dickert...

If you can't figure out a better offense with a QB like Mateer and a RB like Parker and if you can't get a reliable defense against mid-level sh*t squads...

You're not a Head Coach.

Not for WSU anyway.

Hiring and retaining coaches is the hardest part about coaching at a WSU. You are always gonna be replacing and needing succession plans in place because your coaches are either good and getting poached or suck and need to go. Best to look for guys as position coaches who are young up and comers and can slide into the coordinator spots without a hitch.

If he hired himself as DC then 1 less coordinator to worry about (until he leaves anyway) and it would free up more money for the OC.

Not to disagree with you, but I think it's easier than people read.

Pay the money, get the coaches
Pay the money, get the players

Pay the money, get the success.

I don't care if we are P4 conference or not.

If we had 30 million a year for players and 10 million a year for coaches... we'd be the spot everyone came to.

We just need money.

I’ve been saying that my whole life. But I’m still going to work every morning.

Maybe but, he still has more wins four seasons in than any other WSU coach.

I get it, but Bill Doba also had 10 wins his 1st season.

Leach lost to Big Sky Teams.

I believe more in the "full story" over time and then look at who did it against what.

I'm really not putting Dickert ahead of Jim Walden for WSU coaching history for what was accomplished

That’s an interesting thought. That’s not uncommon for offensive guys trying to think of defensive coaches who also call plays. With everything the HC has to manage now from communication with collectives and NIL talented players to transfer portal, it’s getting harder and harder to do. I’d say you need additional support somewhere else if you are going to call plays.

One thing I think needs to change with coaching is that coaches should have a designated clock management and challenge guy. Doesn’t need to be someone making $300K a year, you could literally have a GA do it. Someone smart enough to understand every possible scenario and not get caught up in the emotions of the game. It’s amazing but not surprising how often head coaches F up clock management at the end of the half/game, challenge something they shouldn’t and burn a timeout, etc. Dickert screwed that pooch at least twice this year.

Wonder if Dickert kicked a couple hundred thousand into the Collective? Wouldn't be that surprising if he did, honestly. He hit some bonuses this year.
