In Shaw's presser they asked him about the "tweaks" on offense. He said the loss last year really hurt and they started to game-plan literally after the game. He said the changes they made on offense were a year in the making.

I would say that's some respect there. I actually like Shaw a lot but I love to wipe that smirk off his face.

What was so weird was Stanford’s offense went from pro style set to gun spread. Like us. Basically Shaw is trying to air raid.

I'm actually not surprised. Shaw went against every normal tendency we associate with him, and had some success. I give him credit for attacking us where we were vulnerable. He just couldn't get enough stops to win. We were the better team. Feels good to say that.

I've never seen it as a smirk. He shows very little expression, and what might look like a smirk, I think, is just him smiling with his mouth closed. For him this game was a real heart breaker. His comments were very candid and respectful. It would be doubly sweet to see them pummel the dogs next week.

It’s a smirk. He’s quite smug.

Come on man, Shaw’s as arrogant as they get. You haven’t heard enough of his sound bites. That’s a smug smirk if there ever was one and I love seeing it wiped off his face!

Seems to me that Shaw is smart enough to see the writing on the wall and is trying to adapt...look at how much Alabama has changed their passing philosophy over the last five years, even though their conservative running game was winning National Championships back then. Saban (and Shaw) now understands what Leach always knew.

He’s smug, but his press conference last night was authentic. I appreciated his comments, and I’m sure coach Leach did as well.

Fans of other teams say similar things about Leach from hearing only soundbites. They are incorrect. I have no problem with Shaw.

You don't think that Leach is a cocky, arrogant SOB? Well....at least your consistent. FWIW, it's one of the things that makes Leach so dangerous to our competition. He thinks he's smarter and better than everyone else and he puts a lot of effort into proving it.

Flat, I would say that CML has taken another step in that propf statement. ;)

Across the board, what we think is going on in someone else's brain is usually wrong. Often, what we think is smugness, can be that the person is uncomfortable in certain settings.

Yeah, but he's OUR sob.

Actually, I'd describe him as extremely aggressive and intelligent, not real big on compassion, but sometimes compassion is hard to recognize in our culture because it can be disguised as a hard swift kick in the ass.

I'm thrilled that he's our SOB.

On the compassion part, there was an article last week breaking down a day in Mike Leach's life where he told one of the wide receiver coach's not to mention a bad drop by one of the receivers to the kid because it was an aberration. He knew that having five of his teammates and two coaches bitching about the cover on his TPS report was not the way to make him better. Better to give the kid a break. So yeah, there's compassion there at times.

Shaw doesn’t have the horses to just squash the opponent at the line of scrimmage. Stanford’s admission requirements are going to keep a lot of receivers away. His play calling has been quite average in my opinion. When his OL couldn’t push the other team around he’s been generally clueless.

The surprise is he apparently cannot find (or cannot land) more than one capable running back at at time.

Borghi would have been Furds starter last night had they landed him (with Love not 100%)

I like Shaw as a coach. He is arrogant though & cocky and does have a smirk. All are true. It was very satisfying wiping that smirk off his face and beating them AGAIN !

It was for me to. I really thought his presser showed a lot of class. I don't watch a ton of pressers especially for other programs but I would doubt many coaches would acknowledge how tough it was getting beat last season, that they game planned for an entire year for last nights games, and all after ending up on the losing end again.

I don't have a problem with Shaw or his smirk. I think he has cost Stanford a few wins late in big games over the years because he's stubborn much like Leach can be. It's what makes them both good coaches, but sometimes it bites them in the ass. I really like that Shaw often confronts the national media and gives them the "what for" when they bash the conference as being weak. You can tell it really pisses him off and I commend him for pushing back on that issue as much as he does in interviews.

I have nothing but respect for Shaw. He does things the right way. After a tough loss Saturday night he had nothing but positives to say about both his team and the Cougs. He gave credit where credit was due and praised Minshew. I love our recent success against the Trees but that is one PAC 12 rival I actually have the utmost respect for.
