Soccer Coach Receives Extension

I would say that he earned it! I don't recall an NCAA finish this high since the NCAA indoor track championship in the '70's.

Obviously it's a rarity in our neck of the woods. Didn't we actually win an indoor NCAA championship in the 70's (late 70's)? We finished second outdoor in '91. Probably win if not for "Tony" Li falling over one of the final hurdlers.

Back to soccer, keeping Shulenberger in town and the program headed on it's current path is huge. He's brought a lot of stability to a program that was already good but he's taken it a step further, has a young roster, and signing Rodman along with the rest of the fall class only should raise expectations. Good times! The women's fall programs (soccer, volleyball, tennis, and swimming) seem to be in pretty good shape.

1977. Closest team finish in history.

FYI, the Cougs won the national championship in 1978, and were runner up 4 times. Probably entitled to a second because SMU won one with an ineligible athlete, but the NCAA, in its wisdom, decided not to reverse the result when discovered.
