We knew attendance might be rough but if I'm reading it correctly, that looks really grim for a team which could be defending home turf for THE bowl-qualifier game.

I look at it as a gift of sorts to fans who normally cannot afford to go to a coug football game. Face it .coug football needs a healthy influx of new fans. from the high payers to the fans in Eastern Washington who will buy coug stuff and wear it on game day.The Stanford will be another sellout and the noise should be maddening. Perhaps they will bring friends and family to their first football game?. If is a Game Day situation,.what better tool to sell coug football. Look at it as a small price to pay for the future of coug football.

I tend to agree with Chip. Most of the people I know with season tickets and kids are skipping this one because of Halloween. I will be sacrificing my father of the year award by leaving my kids at home if they don't want to come.

This. Exactly. My sister-in-law (the only other die-hard Coug in the family) and I were already concerned about this before the season started. My wife is somewhat sympathetic, given that ESPN GD may be there. And we both have kids ranging from 3 to 8 years old--perfect Halloween ages. Yet despite my eye rolling every year about how stupid Halloween is (Candy and costumes are a big deal? Really?) I got rolled years ago for going to the ASU/WSU game on the Thu night. The only way I see getting away with this one is if ESPN GD is there.

Interesting. I was just complaining about the spammy CAF donation emails, and I didn't get these. Phew!

I'm skipping this one, unfortunately. I'll have to DVR it and watch it at 10PM from the beginning. This could be daddy's little girl (she's 12), last Trick or Treat as a kid. I just can't blow off my little girl for the game, even though it's HUGE. Frankly, it could be my very last Trick or Treat with my daughter. Shocking how the years fly by.

You can try my approach. I negotiated with my daughter -- she's foregoing Trick-or-Treating and going to the game with me, and in exchange I'm buying her whatever candy she wants, we're dressing up in costumes, and ... she gets to pick the costumes. So, if you see a 6'2", 260 lb guy dressed up like a *&^%# ballerina escorting a young, female 75# ninja at the game, you'll know it's me. (I'm hoping I can get tickets near the student section so I blend in...) I AM GOING TO THE GAME THOUGH, so I don't feel so bad about get out-negotiated.

You're a great Dad ruff. I have a two yr old daughter and won't be able to make the trip from PDX. First and last game I will miss this year. However, my seats have been gifted to two Spokane Cougs that will be making their first trip to Martin this year.

A actually inquired -- student tickets for the game (to sit on the student side) are $40.

For the life of me, I can't understand why they can't simply hand out (for a can of food), G/A tickets to students with IDs so that place is packed.

At the end of your life you won't look back and wish you had chosen the Coug game over spending time with your daughter. I promise.

Exactly. I know some people on here like to ridicule people for looking after their family, but...Home Family always comes first before Coug Family. That's the honest truth. Coug Family can be supported through tons of variously other means, but there is no substitute, exception, or exemption...that trumps the ones you care about most, and spending time with them is important.

Halloween games are going to be rough on attendance. I think most people with kids are going to stay home and go trick-or-treating, and give up the game. My wife told me I could go if I wanted, but like I told her...there are 6 Coug games every year, but there's only one Halloween, and kids only really do it for 8-10 years, so to me it's not even a debate (although, if kickoff was at 11 or 12, I'd probably try to squeeze in the game).

There won't be another Halloween game until at least 2019, so I don't feel the slightest reservation about missing this one. I will admit though, that for purely selfish reasons I'm kind of hoping that it doesn't end up being picked for GameDay. But with Florida-Georgia, Cal-USC, and Temple-Notre Dame the same weekend...I'm feeling like it's still a longshot.

Beyond candy and costumes it's pointless. We can do costumes Sat morning and in the RV lot, and even at the game. My daughter is a type I diabetic, but my wife insists my daughter get a "normal" childhood by trick or treating. Candy is out, so how "normal" can it be?

Anyway, I'm still pushing to go with the family and tailgate. I hope it happens.

There are still boat loads of tickets available for this one. Hopefully a win vs Az gets people off the fence.

Not just Halloween games, but a Thursday night game seems to me to always be problematic for attendance. It's all about TV revenue, even if the optics of a very small crowd are present for us.

One of the reasons I am blessed to be part of a close loving family... revolve around some of the crazy impromptu trips we took to Pullman on game days.

The AD ticket offer is a great start. Dressing up with the kids and going in costume sounds like FUN! ...and a unique Halloween experience you're kids will NEVER forget... unlike... yet another routine lap around the neighborhood for some Snickers and Airheads.

Imagine what you could do to make this the coolest Halloween ever! Rent a Suburban/Vanand load it up with your kids, their friends and one other parent chaperone! $100 bucks. Dress it up with Window paint, Cougar flags and streamers. Trick or Treat Pullman.

I could go on but, some of you seem to have already accepted defeat so, what's the use?

If we beat Arizona, attendance will be fine.

That's exactly how I feel. I've got six more years until she's off to college. Grateful and thankful for each and everyday.
Every single kid we've taken with us to Pullman over the years... DOZEN'S of them...ended up at a University. Most of them, in Pullman at WSU. Age 12 was the best opportunity to open eyes and leave the impression, "I had no idea"

Food for thought.

Yeah, Thursday games are always going to be an issue just because of the travel concerns. Our last Thursday game was also Halloween (Oct. 31, 2013), and official attendance was 20,617...but there weren't that many there. I don't think it was over 17K.

I think Athletics and Marketing could do MUCH better with Halloween games. It would not be that hard to set up a trick-or-treat event - either on the mall, in the coliseum, the practice field, through Greek Row, or even the RV lot(s). Also wouldn't be hard to make a haunted house and some other activities that might just become a bigger draw for the kids, and the safety of it would be attractive for their parents.

One of the marketing challenges faced is the lack of knowing game time until 12 days before kickoff.

Regardless, I'm going with Chinook on this one. Bring the kids, dress up myself and have a good ol time.

Just spoke to a casual person I know with three kids, girls age 5,7,11.

He's now going after learning of the AD deal. His girls are dressing him up as a Minion.

Are you suggesting that people who choose to stay home and spend time with family for a holiday over going to this football game have "accepted defeat?"

Much as your scenario sounds fun to Cougar football fans, piling into the car and trekking over the mountains may not be at the top of the list for your kids or other members of your family.

I do have to confess I find this almost humorous coming from you.

I know, right?! I've taken my daughter to Pullman twice, two years in a row. We've done just about everything but attend a Volleyball game. Even showed her a sorority, which she was given a tour, and toured a brand new dorm. The vision is amazing, and she's only 12.

I don't want to leave you with the wrong impression.

I'm saying... It sounds as though some fans have accepted defeat in attending the Stanford game.

Some have posted their excuses and wrapped around family and semi-holiday, night game, etc.,

ALL of them, I believe, deep down... Because they're Cougar fans... Wish they could find a way to somehow... Wave a magic wand... And make it ALL happen.

Some will... And I am happy knowing what they are in store for... Based upon personal experience in similar scenerios I have lived... With my own kids...

Who to this day... Can recite to me and Mom... in precision detail... Similar unlikely trips we DID make to Pullman.

If someone doesn't want to go... Don't... just, spare us cheesy false excuses and attempt to recruit others.

*** WHEN we beat ARIZONA... trust me... Halloween game night in Pullman is gonna be a Party no one will ever forget... And, I do mean EVER, especially if we beat Stanford.

I've heard no one mention the view in the stands as a selling point- Halloween Saturday night, late kickoff... if the weather is halfway decent... ooh.

Not for the kids, but, hey, there's football too!

If a happy wife and children is defeat, I'd hate to know what you consider success.

Happy wife and children are excuses. Ah.

Of course we do. Unfortunately, my wife is immune to magic wands. And my kids are too young to get why I'd rather be standing and screaming in a stadium for 3-4 hours instead of knocking on doors dressed in a cheesy costume asking a stranger for empty calories. But maybe in a few years they will.

We beat Arizona... It sets up a Pac-12 North Championship battle in Pullman on Halloween night.

For the fist time in over a decade. For the first time ever in the history of a 12 year old child... The message of goal setting, hard work, difficult choices, planning, perseverance, defeat without despair, more planning, hard work, mission... And finally milestone of achievement... will be on full display in all its wonder and glory.

Your kids will experience a life moment you will have and be able to share... and reference... forever... but may not be able to duplicate again at this age.

I'm sorry you and your wife if either of you cannot see this. Truly.

As the old saying goes.."happy wife, happy life."
Sounds to me like you are doing the right thing.

we beat Arizona, it sounds to me to be a lost... Literal... Parental opportunity of a lifetime.

*** I'm just asking... Enjoy Arizona ... And, consider... if you were to propose something "crazy"... for all the right once-in-a-lifetime reasons... What might that look like? Think about it

My wife likes goin places and gettin deals. My kids like what I tell them to, very much including the Cougs. So this checks off a lot of boxes already. And I've been roped into throwing a pre-Halloween Halloween party, so he can get all the Halloween out of his system then.

Until they reach a certain age - and it will vary what age that is - kids aren't going to understand the "if we win this game, then..." story. They've seen 3 games already this year, and don't know why one game is different from another. Playoffs and bowl games are foreign concepts.

What my kids know is that their grandparents don't go to Cougar games, but they have candy and decorations, and they make a big deal of it when the kids dress up in their costumes. So, they'd rather go see grandma & grandpa than go watch another football game, and I think their priorities are in the right place. There are plenty of ways to teach kids about goals and hard work. They don't need to sacrifice time with family to learn those lessons...and that family time will trump football every time.

I assured the kids they'd be able to wear their costumes and get candy, they're pretty excited. If Gameday comes, that's just a cherry on top of an already amazing sundae.
